TabChesson Ikr?! One of the most beautiful, romantic moments put on fan. Just for this number alone, it's become my favorite GK/JD film. It's too bad the ending seems so rushed and goofy compared to this. It's almost like a different movie.
I haven't seen the full movie in a long while. What happens after she discovers he is sitting there? Some conversation about... Something about the boring guy everyone is trying to get her to marry? A romantic kiss got cut out of this clip?
@@garyb3397 Nonsense. Streisand, Ella and Billie are as unique and gifted as Judy was. Why so many Garland fans are so defensive about other great talents has always baffled me. God knows nobody was more appreciative of other stars than Judy herself!
She seldom looked more stunning than in this scene (a little bit of weight was always becoming to her), and, of course, the voice was always unmatchable. I love to watch this number because you can practically see "A Star is Born" looming on her horizon!
i agree she looks amazing and so much healthier when she was allowed to eat normally. its unfortunate that she spent much of this movie being weight shamed and fell back into dieting and pill use because of it
Summer Stock was my introduction to Judy and is my favourite of her films. This song just tugs at your heart and Gene Kellys expression says everything.
🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Masterpiece! One of Judy Garland's most beautiful and heartfelt performances! This is also Gene and Judy's last film together, so it makes this scene very sentimental! They were both truly amazing! ❤❤
A mere 28 years old and already mid career. With such an abundance of vocal and emotive talent it is beyond me how Judy Garland ended up with practically nothing in her last years. A woman alive today with half her ability would be a certifiable mega-star.
She was looked upon as a cash cow grow up, by her parents, and the different film companies. It wasn't like today. They owned you and mommy signed her up so young.
Beautifully sung, acted, choreographed and filmed, and a nice touch to have the camera pan down to Kelly. Judy looked so lost, though; so in need of aid and comfort. Her husband at the time later wrote, "I failed Judy."
This film went waaaaay over budget because Garland was having a real nervous breakdown while shooting it, and was in terrible personal form. But when they edited it all together, she's magic.
Lyrics: There's a star for everyone Brightly shining in the sky It seems to be a part of our destiny. Every night I eagerly Watch them all go twinkling by I can't seem to find The one the heavens assigned to me. Friendly star, Where can you be hiding? Smile for me from out of the lonely night. Friendly star, My fate need deciding How I need the glow of your guiding light I know that you are near For I am strangely dreaming And so if you can see me from afar Won't you kindly light my way, Lead me to my lover Just point him out and whisper There you are, There you are. Then my love you will be Standing here close to me In your eyes I will see my friendly star.
I love this song and wonder why she never sang it in concert. She sang an equally moving song at the beginning of "The Harvey Girls" which to the best of my knowledge she never performed again. Well we have this and that is enough. I love this woman and believe she was the most talented female performer of her generation. This was a difficult film for her to make. A six week shoot turned into six months. It is not a great movie but after "The Wizard of Oz " and "A Star is Born' it is my favorite Garland film. Gene Kelly who was not always the nicest man in Hollywood (Arthur Laurents accused him of being a homophobe) was unbelievably patient with Judy, never once losing his temper or demeaning her in any way. Yes she had her troubles but she gave us so much joy in spite of them. I love you Frances Ethel; you have certainly enriched my life-thanks for the memories
daniel white What a touching comment! From what I've read in some source (which may have sensationalised things somewhat), she didn't quite get on with Harvey Girls and Summer Stock composer Harry Warren; he made a few impertinent remarks about Judy's work ethic and behaviour on set that have led biographers and film critics to believe she may not have wanted to sing his songs very often as a way of rebuffing him after his hurtful comments. This may all be just Hollywood gossip but who knows! I also think In The Valley (Where the Evening Sun Goes Down) is a gorgeous song, and Friendly Star is also sublime and has such an interesting melody and tonal progression. Judy always touched the songs she sang with such magic. Apparently they played Judy's version of In The Valley at Warren's funeral, so perhaps the rift wasn't that large. This is such a mixed bag of a film with some glorious moments, and this scene to me is Judy's MGM swan song, where we really get to see what she was made of... thankfully we still have A Star is Born!
I agree. Garland could've easily sung this, and (as you wrote about "The Harvey Girls") "In the Valley" on herTV series. Both are gorgeous ballads. There's also "When I Look at You" from "Presenting Lily Mars."
Judy was very kind to Gene during his movie debut in For Me and My Gal. He repaid the favour to her during this production. It even shows on fim, his character is so different to his usual cocky characters and he is so sweet to her. I feel like real life slipped so much into their characters.
@@MsWesty81 The speech where he visits her backstage with flowers to encourage her and break through her stage fright, that speech is like two dear friends talking, like he is telling Judy she can do this, she can get through all of this, she can survive what she is going through. I absolutely love that scene!
Gene Kelly absolutely handsome and dashing as can be at 2:40. What could he have possibly been thinking while Judy was singing this song ? The epitome of longing for a love that he believes is not his? His lack of expression save for the look of losing someone, the frown that does not turn into the twinkling boyish man he is known for, has such depth. I feel he knows what she is singing about all and it's all too familiar to him.
All of Judy's close friends were deeply worried about her during this time and trying to help her get through this movie. That might have provided all the sadness and loss he needed for this scene.
Exquisite singing, acting and cinematography. That camera pan to Gene Kelly adds a real kick to the number. Overall, I don't care for the film though, as Judy looks so tired and worn and unhappy through so much of it.
She was fighting her demons big time during this film. And then she walks into the scene and does this.Perhaps the most mesmerizing moment in her film career. And that's saying a lot. No other star approaches her magic. No one.
Judy always lip synced to her pre recorded playbacks as if she really was singing live.. Just another feather in her cap of talent.. She knew what music was meant for and knew instinctively how to sing a song... A true LEGEND!
We Judy worshippers just feel that she is unique and superior to the majority of singers!! Yes Ella, Billie, Babs etc are great but albeit they are there seems to us that they still lack the ethereal quality of Judy"s talent!!
Gene Kelly never looked better, nor seemed more real, than in this number. That sappy, grinning MGM sailor persona was simply not him. Too bad he did not get to do Pal Joey at Columbia with Rita Hayworth, and, perhaps, Ann Sothern, as his patroness Vera. that would have been good, But MGM would not loan him to Columbia again, after his success in Cover Girl with Rita. Too bad.
What a loss to cinema that Kelly's Pal Joey never made it onto film!!! Frank Sinatra's Pal Joey is not Pal Joey, and by that time Rita Hayworth is playing the wrong role for her. What a shame. Crazy MGM. They also ruined Brigadoon by not allowing them to film on location.
+Ian Thaddiam Actually, I think the dress if more flattering to her than anything else she wears in the movie, except, of course, during "Get Happy"...
They did everything they could in this film to compensate for and distract from her fluctuating weight. Her costumes in this film ("Get Happy" aside) are pretty hideous.
@@JanMike9 There always has to be those few who find it acceptable to give their rude opinions on dress, hair color and weight as if they could do better, don't they? Judy is not just a singer, she is a storyteller! Her voice rises and falls effortlessly!
Judy's eyes are so beautiful. The camera close up of Judy's face at 1:43 is breathtaking! They just don't film stars like this any more.
That's because there ARE no stars like this any more
Gene listens and you can see he just wants to take her in his arms it’s heartbreaking
She is drop dead beautiful here.
She was shot beautifully in this scene, as well as beautiful makeup.
Her lip colour is gorgeous. I was never keen on her hairstyle in this movie but here it looks great.
Judy's voice is the best EVER and she outshines other great singers such as Streisand, Ella, Billie!
Agree. Ella has the STYLE, Streisand, the CONTROL, Billie the heartbreak. But Garland has it all in one simple song: Nobody touches her.

Although visually she seems on the verge of breaking down here, vocally she is outstanding.
I don't like that dark hair very much. I've always preferred her as a redhead.

Another stunning melody by Harry Warren, and moving lyrics by Arthur Freed. Judy sings it to perfection.
