I've been a Carry On fan since i was a kid in the 80s, and love most of them. I'm in the minority, this is in my top 10 Carry On's. I know this is the only one in my top 10 that you've seen so far:

Peter Butterworth was an Allied airman during WW2, before being captured by the Germans. While imprisoned in a POW camp, he helped fellow inmates to escape by taking part in a distraction activity involving a gymnastics vaulting horse.
After the war, a film was to be made about the event called The Wooden Horse. As an aspiring actor, Butterworth auditioned for a part in the movie - but was rejected as he was considered "not heroic-looking, or athletic enough" for a part.

Many people rate this as a lesser Carry On film, but I consider this a good one. This might be because I generally like the period comedy branch of the franchise (e.g. Carry On Cleo, Carry On Jack) rather than the contemporary pieces (e.g. Carry On Doctor, Carry On Regardless).
The role of the lovable rogue and his cover ID is a clever use of what was already something of a cliché at the time; that of the figure in society who's treated as above suspicion. (i.e. The Butler Did It)

There was also a similar plot in Dr Syn Alias The Scarecrow, where Patrick McGoohan played the role a priest as a cover for his criminal activities. I love CO Dick too (thank God i remembered to put the CO in there lol).

I think the only Carry On regular still alive is Jim Dale but he wasn't in this.
For me this is neither one of the best Carry Ons nor one of the worst..
