The twin town of Bernkastel-Kues is often called the heart of the Middle Mosel and is thus regarded as the most popular town and center of the Middle Mosel.
In hardly any other Mosel town do so many guests from all nations come each year to enjoy the incomparable atmosphere of the "City of Vine and Wine". The picturesque old town of Bernkastel with its many charming half-timbered houses from the Middle Ages and attractions such as the historic market square or the Landshut castle ruins invites you to stroll and explore. In the district Kues, however, there are many wineries and taverns. Furthermore the Mosel villages Wehlen and Andel belong to Bernkastel-Kues. One is on the right, the other on the left bank of the Mosel.
Bernkastel-Kues is famous for its vineyards, which are amongst the oldest in Germany. The most famous and most expensive vineyard is indisputably the “Bernkastler Doctor” - one of the finest and most noble Riesling wines.
While the ruins of Landshut Castle atop the mountain are among the most popular highlights of Bernkastel-Kues, the roughly two million annual day trippers typically head straight for the same prime destination: the medieval marketplace and its pristine half-timbered houses.
These include the Renaissance-era town hall from 1608 and St. Michael’s Fountain from roughly the same period. Or the splendid Adler Apotheke, built in 1660. In the run-up to Christmas, the many windows of the Tudor-style house are converted into a giant advent calendar. The Spitzhäuschen, a pointy structure that now houses a cosy wine bar, is an especially popular photo motif. It has stood for almost 600 years now at a slightly askew angle, as if balanced on a pedestal much too small for it. The recognized health resort is the birthplace of the famous theologian and philosopher Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464). In the Kues district the house with the white pinnacles and red facade where the great Cardinal Cusanus was born still stands.
