Thanks for watching. Yet another featherlite and yet another problem. This time the fuel lines needded to be replaced and after that was fixed the primer bulb wasn't working. Once that was worked out it needed a slight carb adjustment.
Excellent video! Really helped me with my WeedEater. New subscriber. Very thorough demonstration. Thank you for making the video and sharing, big thumbs up.
Thanks for the sub!
Hi ,I have to say this is the most concise and clear video i've seen on this subject .I've watched others from other people ,but had to comment on how clear and exact this video was. Thanks!
Charles Ross
Thank you Charles Ross for the comment I appreciate it.
Keep up the great work sir. Another tip is to heat up the end of the line to soften the tip to get it onto the fuel filter.
Yes that works too. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Got one of these at the dump. No word on what was wrong with it but didn’t start. Cracked fuel lines, carb was dirty but diaphram etc all good. Got it cleaned up, new lines, new bulb. Now it runs but idles rough, bogs out when throttling up… Quits, with a puff of smoke out the carb. I suspect the idle settings but I don’t have a spline tool.
that's a good place to start.
This is what then 85 was doing although it ran fine the other day. We never know. Good fix and Blessings!
Honestly I am binge watching your videos just cause they teach so much. Already bought a non working gas trimmer and fixed it just watching your videos
Thank you very much for the comment I appreciate it
@@HomeGaragechannel Good video very detailed information and excellent camera work!
The featherlite i have is model sst25ce and it does not have the choke lever and the bulb sits at the same side as the choke.
Mine is also is having problems with starting so i will hev to remove the carb and see if it is dirty. This video will help.
Cheers
I hope it helps you out. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Thank you. This was an extremely informative video. It actually taught me something.
You're welcome and thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Outstanding video. I have one just like this one and it has been a “workhorse” thru the years.
Nice! I still use this one to this day, I love how easy it is to use.
Good job. Easy and informative. Wish more vids on here were like this one.

The only thing I needed to fix was the speed just to keep it from dying often. I would like to give a great thanks to this person for helping us out.
You're absolutely welcome. Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
@@HomeGaragechannel I should be the one to thank you for the video.
Great video. I have a Weed Eater exactly like this one, I bought it 14 years ago "refurbished" from Big Lots for $39. It has been a real workhorse over the years, trimming weeds sometimes three feet high. I need to get it tuned up and replace the fuel lines; yes I know, a new Weed Eater like this one is less than $100, but like everyone else here, I prefer to repair rather than replace.
Wow you got a a machine. If its fixable then I'd also suggest doing so.
Yes totally agree, repair and not replace where possible
These old featherlite weed eaters are on par with modern stihl string trimmers I swear they run for ever and they work against tall weeds
You are a great teacher. Taught me a lot on how carbs work!
Hey thanks for the comment I appreciate it
Good info! Helped me save buying another, and now mine is running great.

Thank you for saving my weed eater! Little did it know that it was perilously close to being tossed into the lake.

excellent work. thanks for the comment I appreciate it.
Recently, after the successful usage for over 20 years, my P1500 Poulan Weed Eater finally decided it was a little tired and wouldn't stay running. Other than an occasional cleaning, no parts had ever been replaced since it was new, so I decided it may be time to replace the fuel filter, gas lines and primer bulb. Noticing just how grungy, "but never abused," it was with oil, dust and exhaust debris, I ended up tearing it completely down to just the engine itself. The main cover containing the pull-cord had a really bad buildup of oil debris built up inside the housing, and planning on using a degreaser, not wanting to get the cord all nasty, I removed the cord spool and the windings came flying out. It was a nightmare and definitely an art to get it rewound and back in after amazingly only three tries, and actually one-upped it a round or two for a better recoil of the cord. I wouldn't recommended anyone to do this and I myself sure won't be doing that again!! LOL
Anyway, I got it all back together, filled it with gas/oil mixture and it wouldn't even spark. I pulled the plug, and amazingly it somehow still looked new, but cleaned it up anyway. Still nothing, and the new bulb wouldn't fill, so I put the original back in, but while doing so, noticed that when the small carb part came off with it, that the screen was all but covered in a black substance, so very carefully, rubbed and removed most that I could see, reassembled, primed, and it fired right up and ran like it was new. The full choke, it appears, doesn't do anything now, but time will tell, the bulb doesn't fill completely, and non-stop air bubbles continue on the return line. I really don't mind, as long as it will run smoothly, as I have never paid much attention in the past, but are continuing bubbles normal?? I think I'll pull the whole carb apart and check it out for proper functions. By the way, it was a Very Nice and Informative Video!! Thanks!!
BTW, I got my new filter, fuel lines and primer bulb from Amazon for a mere $7.00 and they arrived in only three days. The insides of the fuel lines seem to be a touch smaller, but I was still able to connect to the filter and fittings with a little more effort and the fuel still flows well through them.
.
nothing wrong with the bubbles
Excellent excellent and informative video. No blue rubber surgical gloves and ego talk, just what you need to know and look for. Thanks!

I have a mowing business right now,and have been mowing yards now for over 30 years.when I first started I bought me 2 of these weed eaters in featherlites in the curved shafts, then about 5 years later I bought me some more in straight shafts.and the motors on them were not worth 2 cents,so I took the straight shafts off and put them on my old curved shaft models and both weed eaters served me for almost 15 years.the older green weed eater models motors where really great motors compared to today's new green weed eater brands, but now I own 13 husqvarna weed eaters and my favorite is the husqvarna model 322l now and I have 3 of them just for me to use only now.the guys that work for me are forbidden to touch or use them at all now,I have other husqvarna for them to use or most of my guys own and use there own like stihl or echo.me I'd love to find some of the old green weed eaters and rebuild the motors this winter and use them when needed I still have parts like shafts and old broke motor parts laying around in my old work garage where I keep my mowers and lawn equipment now!!!!!
Thank you for sharing your experience. I've heard great things about the older stuff.

I used to have a weed eater fl26 plus model trimmer about 7 years ago, only had it for 3 years, that had carb issues, I could never get it to start properly, it always ran on half choke, it would always stalled on full coke and off choke, I know have a new home-lite gas trimmer and runs excellent on all choke settings with the throttle plus it idles excellent on all choke settings as well. But great vid though.

This kinda reminds me of when I was working on my grandmas old home light weed whacker it would not prime. So after I figured out how to get the air filter cover off I took apart the carb and I stoped dead in my tracks Becca’s the metering diaphragm was shot 😕 so I drains the gas and put it back in its spot.
Thanks for the comment. Yes it will need to be replaced or a new carb.
Yea but I was on vacation and I love working on engines and we where only there for a half a week

Great video! Sad to see you went thru all that effort to discover it was jus a cracked fuel line. Hey, I been there. Now, where you skimmed over the carb adjust, that’s where I was needing more insight. I hope you have a video for that. ;)

The kill switch is an easy fix. I particularly like the switches on Stihl equipment. They are spring loaded to reset to the run position when you release them. I use Stihl trimmers and blowers a lot at a friend’s house. When using my Shindaiwa and Echo equipment, my arm gets sore before I remember to turn the damned switch on! 🤣🤣🤣
very true.

Excellent video! I see you and others taking a 2 cycle like this, making it run and am amazed. I've been fighting with a Craftsman trimmer for months now. Last season it just started siphoning fuel out through the carb. Was running fine and died. Looked at it and realized it was siphoning the fuel right out the back. I've torn the carb completely down and can blow air through all the ports. At least the ones it seems like should be open. Diaphragm and gaskets all look to be in great shape. I've watched Walbro's video explaining how the carb is supposed to function. After reassembly, it will run with a blast of carb clear without the fuel system primed. As soon as I fill it and prime the system, it won't start and causes the siphoning to start again. At a loss for why it would do that. Any ideas? Hate to replace it when I'm sure it's probably something simple that I just don't know about.
Sounds like a needle spring issue. Honestly replacing the carburetor is the best solution
@@HomeGaragechannel I was leaning toward that option. Just hate to go there without trying everything I can. I'll look up a rebuild kit and compare it to the price of a new carb first. Thanks for the reply.
@@ByteMeDammit that's a great way to approach it. Thanks again for your time
Great work here bro! My channel has vids like these too. I like the narrative
Thanks for the comment I'll take a look at your channel.
The small fuel line looked rather loose where it entered the tank. Hope it doesn't leak. I've had that problem before where no grommet is used.
Thanks for the comment Nelson. Yes not loose but it could a hair tighter. If you wanted to make both holes the same size that would fix it.
Featherlite isnt to bad of a weedeater... I used one for a entire year daily for lawncare
Wow really? Whatever happened to it? Thanks for the comment I appreciate it
I got me another weedeater, It was still running good tho. I got tired of having to adjusting the screws to have it running good. Had to adjust them nearly daily and cut a lot of property with it. I have a video on my channel of a non paying yard, before and after, it was cut with the curve shaft featherlite. That property was really overgrown, weeds and grass 8 feet tall. Upgraded to a more powerful 4 stroke weedeater... Now Im running a Stihl... It may be a cheaper weedeater but it gets the job done.

After new spark plug new carburetor new lines and filter.. playing with the screws for no gain I replaced the vented gas cap..bingo runs like new!

Great video, done a couple of Mc Culloch strimmers, similar design to what you worked on, and i quite like them , but i have had some issues with the stop switch not working,
Me too. They just seem to wear out to fast. Thanks again for the comment.
My weed eater had a cracked primer bulb easily replaced for $2 one other thing I would mention to all people using small engines like this use ethanol-free fuel it's better for the rubber parts and better for the engine
Stan Z you're absolutely correct
Thanks so much the very thing that is wrong with mine
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
Home Garage a good video is a good video
I haven't used a 2 stroke trimmer in years but I thought they used to smoke a little bit. Aren't they supposed to smoke a little, to ensure to the operator that they're running on the rich side of the air/fuel mixture? I'm using premix fuel in a can, must be really clean burning, almost no odor either...
I used several of your videos to rejuvenate a Weed Eater FL20 so that's why I ask. Many thanks.
you know i never really pay attention to the exhaust. i always mix my fuel with the same oil at 40:1 and some of my trimmers smoke and some don't. as long as I have it running slightly on the rich side i really don't care if it smokes a lot or not at all. I think it should smoke a tiny bit but if it smokes too much there might be some piston ring damage.
Thanks for the video. My trouble is that mine idles just fine - but it bogs down and quits when I press the gas in order to get it running up to speed.
No problem. Try turning the fuel adjustment screw closer to the engine about a quarter turn counterclockwise wise. If it still does it turn it out another quarter turn.
@@HomeGaragechannel I will try that. I am at the point where I either buy a new spark plug or throw the damn thing in the dump. It is ten years old, only used once or twice, has lived in a winterized shed, and I have inherited it. I have taken apart the carb - everything works/moves and looks brand new, and I have gone at it with brake/parts cleaner. Replaced the fuel hoses - they crumbled the first time I touched them. QUESTION: the intake to the squeeze bulb primer is the LOWER of the two hose nipples, correct? (The return is the TOP one?) Gas is correct mix, fresh, and I put in an ounce of Sea Foam just for kicks. What is frustrating is that it ran FINE for about 15 minutes after I replaced the hoses, was working at edging the flower beds, and then it started acting up. Electric is looking very good right about now!
@@Leftatalbuquerque yes the line with the fuel filter goes to the lower port. The top port is the return with no filter on it. Just go electric no one will blame you.
@@HomeGaragechannel The old adage is true: misery loves company! Thanks for helping. Much appreciated. I hate small engines!! (I am on a farm with chainsaws and lawn mowers and snow blowers... I am trapped in a Stephen King novel!!) I think it's time for a new spark plug.
@@Leftatalbuquerque let me know

This seems to be a common problem with the featherlite model, I have the heavy duty straight shaft weed eater and it starts with no problems while my old featherlite curved one took forever to start.
Thank you Tyler Wollen for the comment I appreciate it
I also have the straight shaft trimmer its the model sst25ce and mine is having problems starting and staying running.
Never have figured out why the supply side is the smaller of the two lines.
it doesn't make sense to me either
Set the lo mixture for highest RPM's at idle and hi mixture for highest RPM's at full-throttle, then best setting.
Thank you Hank Bridges for the comment I appreciate it
Yeah that weedeater wouldn't carry much resale I would've just tossed that cheap pos to the side and kept working on echos and stihls😂
very true
Mine was left out all winter too.
you mean outside?
Good job i have but i cant seem to get to run good
Have you considered replacing the carb?
I have always assumed that if 1 of the carb lines needs to be replaced, the other one does as well. It will soon break if it is not replaced.
you are absolutely correct.
I have similar 10 year old Featherlight weed mower and wont start, you gave some ideas to look at. Good info video but why does fuel look not mixed?
it's mixed 40:1 and that's what's it's supposed to look like. I pour 1 ounce of 2 stroke oil, in a 40 ounce jar and then fill the jar. it's measured the most simple way possible
Mine is original from factory and one of the lines had a straight coupling/nipple/splicer in it inside the tank. Not sure why they would have that unless maybe just for ease of factory assembly? Also, should the return line be a certain length inside the tank?
I think you might be right about the ease of installation at the factory. The return line can be as long or as short as you want in the tank. I usually put about at least an 1" just to make sure it won't pop out.
@@HomeGaragechannel having so much trouble adjusting the carb. Cant find a tool for sale. Someone on youtube suggested using a pen casing but I cant even tell if I'm turning the screw. So annoying.
I have done a video using the tool, yes the pen method is just a band aide to getting the real tool. To help tell if the screw is turning, make a mark on the top of the screw to one side. when you turn the pen, do small turns and look at the top of screw at your mark. then you'll know if you're even turning it.
@@HomeGaragechannel Dman. Great idea thx. Still need tool. I'm running out of pens.

did you already ready replace the carb or serviced it?
Home Garage serviced it.
Your service videos were extremely informative, and they were able to lead me to get it running while holding the trigger down, but it dies out when released.

I never thought of checking the hardware store for fuel hose. Is the hose they carry fuel resistant? I'd have figured what they'd carry be more for water or air plumbing uses.
yes, just make sure that you're in the "lawn care" section of the store
Some good tips, thank you.

Apparently it was serviced before, but I noticed that it runs at full speed
Sometimes it take a couple of cold starts after an adjustment to make sure everything works fine. This is probably the situation here.
@@HomeGaragechannel thanx...btw do you have a video which addresses the solution?
@@samuelvelez1643 you mean just a tuning video on 2 cycle equipment. I believe so. But most of the time it's at the end of the repair. There isn't a video titled tuning a carb tho. You just have to look and see if the pictured trimmer looks like yours is all.
@@HomeGaragechannel ok,thanx again for the tip

I thought you said it had low compression. And would be hard to start...? Arent weed eaters 20cc supposed to have around 45psi. Cylinder pressure? I wouldnt think it would be good to have much more as there are no oiler rings on the piston because its 2cycle.. i would just be concerned if it dropped pressure.. am I right in my thinking or am i missing something? Im just going off relating other things to this, not trying to sound like a smart ass. Apologies if i do... but you seem knowledgable enough to ask.. i have seen a “mechanic” at s&s tire say he was checking compression on his little 4 cyl. And instead of the gauge on the spark plug then turning it over he. Hooked an air hose to it and gauge to the dip stick tube.. swore he knew what he was doing... well he squoze. That air nozzle. all the way and shop pressure was 280psi for whatever reason.. blew the rings into the oilpan and the filter across the shop.. filled the air gauge with oil and. Bent valves n all.. totaled it.. and he was a “professional”.. little story for ya.. had. To be there, dude bent over looking at the gauge and crap exploded and pinged off everything and there he is. Just looking at the gauge. Said “it didnt move” trying to play it off like it was already blown. Up.. lol
Thank you for the comment. I appreciate your questions and you bring up a good point about the compression. I want to answer your question by doing a compression test on a fairly new stihl trimmer and see what it is. Usually if I get a newish trimmer I never do a compression test on it because its usually not the problem. I hope to get back with you soon on the answer.
Don't adjust the carb without the foam air cleaner in place. 2 cycle motors are very sensitive to pressure and suction and both the exhaust and the intake. That's why you're getting a bad throttle response from slow idle.
Thank you for the comment I appreciate it
Great video ! Where do you recommend to buy a carburetor for the same model you are working on ?
I would go to ereplacementparts dot com.
Quick question, if you replace the carb, new fuel lines and filter and it still doesn't start what could else can be the problem?
I would check to make sure that theres spark from the ignition system and then If there is, then I would check the compression from the engine.

Try new gas cap
you would think it would run if its new. What a pain.
Trying to get mine to run. Have done everything in the video. Another video mentions the spark arrester. I don't think this can be accessed.
The spark arrestor can be clogged, but you should still be able to get it to at least start and idle.
If servicing the carb doesn't work, I would replace the carb.
Never push anything into the holes on the gas tank. Use long nose pliers from the inside to pull it out. Good videos though.
Thank you Martin T for the comment I appreciate it
just subscribed, great video. where you you buy fuel line like that i don't think I've ever seen it in the store. Also, are the weed eater brand trimmers actually worth fixing? mine runs like shit, just bought it used. hard as hell to start, barley runs, and then it did and bogged out but smelt really hot.
Thank you Jay H for the comment I appreciate it. I buy the fuel line at Ace hardware otherwise you can buy on Ebay or Amazon. Yes I think they are worth fixing until a certain amount. As far as yours I would suggest a carb and fuel system inspection and if needed a carb adjustment.
Why dont you remove and clean the spark arrester
I'm not sure if this model has a removable screen.
wow great video! I'm considering adjusting the L screw as mine is still bogging down. Can you tell me where I might find the spark arrestor screen on this model? I figure mine is likely clogged. Thanks!

12" hemostat pliers are good for replacing filters. That hose is too small. It should be a snug fit. If the engine sat for a long time, replace the carburetor. The metering diaphragm is the troublemaker. That diaphragm is a little stiff. It should be like tissue paper. Just replace the carburetor!
Yes replacing the carb is usually the safest option. Thanks for the comment
What? That diaphragm was in great shape. No need to replace parts that aren't broken...

I have this same model but mine only starts on half choke then immediately races for 1-3 seconds then dies. Any ideas? I’m loosing my mind. Another question, are all those adjustment tools the same or are they specific to certain models?
Yes the carb is running out of gas to deliver to the engine, and that's why it races right before it dies. The tools Are NOT specific to the model. that's why the tools usually come in a kit with various styles to account for the unpredictability of the screws you might encounter. If you want to take the easy route, just buy a new carb from Amzn.
Where’s the best place to get the D style adjustment screw drivers ?
for me i would use Amazon
Ok so how many times can I change the old oil to my lawn mower
You can change it as often as you want. Realistically once a year is mandatory. Twice a year is being super nice and any more than that is overkill.
Clean the spark arrester and remove it
I'll have to see if this one has a removable screen. Sometimes the cheap ones don't.
My question is why at the end did you choke it out to shut it off?
Other than that it was a really informational video!!!
