- We get some projects done then hoist anchor from Bahia de los Muertos. We have a great day of sailing but a rough, (mostly) windless night making us crave flat water and sleep. We find it in the turquoise shallows of Isla San Francisco.

Garett and Ruth...for your anchor assistant...consider a right angle nut driver (battery operated) of the right size and battery capacity. Half inch drive would be good enough, with a socket that matches your drive winch nut/dog. More battery capacity is better. No deck clutter. Potential other uses. Small in total size. Easy to charge/recharge. I like 56 volt power, but that might be hard to source. 19.4 volt or higher could work...even in tandem with the initial manual tug off the bottom!
An enterprising mechanical engineer and a skilled machinist could probably figure out how to motorize the windlass. If they could do it with tally ho's ancient vertical capstan, it's probably a no brainer to do it with an old horizontal windlass.
You could consider a big battery powered impact drill with some kind of extension that fits your windless to pick up the anchor.
All improvements are temporary,some are more temporary ❤

Look at a right angle drill . I made some adapters for a couple of boat people !! Like three sets so far. From what I have heard they kick ass . For a right angle drill . Big kick ass Milwaukee Milwaukee
Good to see you reading. I have a book suggestion for you. ''South Seas Vagabond'' written by John Wray, a Kiwi , building a boat during the depression years (1930's), in New Zealand, with only pennies in the pocket! I'm sure that if you read it, you will find many of the trials and tribulations you have both had in building your own little ''baby'' It is written in an easy to read fashion, and quite humorous. The yacht called ''Ngataki'', is still being sailed today, nearly 95 years on. Wish I was with you. All the best from NZ again.

There are power electric windlass plug in arms.. I think you had hands on one on a boat you went on some time ago ...but not sure you might need an adapter to allow you to use it on your historic manual anchor windlass.
The advantage is you can take the power to any manual windlass. 🧙🏻♂️🇬🇧
Hi Garret & Ruth, Have you ever considered putting another cabin top at the stern with the tiller reaching over it? It would give you another cabin and you could sit on it while helming. You would still have a nice cockpit area in between the two cabin tops.

Just one thing, those desertic mountains in the background, with no trees, make me so sad! Maybe because I'm from Québec and I love forests so much... The simple and cheapest way to do hydraulics for the winch would be a travel trailer slide pump. They are 12v and reversible in a self contained unit. Hook it to a hydraulic motor that slips on the winch drive and pins in place. Another option would be a power steering pump on your engine and plumb in a valve and motor. Again, pinning in place.
A hydraulic motor that will turn that slowly and have the torque you need will probably be quite large, and thus expensive. I ran a hydraulic shop for 45 years, and I'd suggest a straight electric system with some sort of gear reduction. The drill drivers other commenters suggest sound more practical to me.

Regarding the windlass, and maybe you have tried this already, but I would think a strong cordless drill with a rod shaped like the end of the manual crank chucked up would pull in the anchor.

Rather than spending money and time adapting your manual windless to make it a powered windless, take a look at this option:
Many cruisers use a Milwaukee M18 FUEL™ SUPER HAWG™ RIGHT ANGLE Drill with an adapter to power their manual winches. It has the torque to pull a person up the mast. With an adapter it would fit in the handle socket of your manual windless and would still leave your windless usable in manual mode as a backup. You would also have a powerful power tool for project work.

Just buy a good electric windlass with manual option. We have a Maxwell. Probably as good money to spend as your windvane. Just spend the money. You don't need two windlasses. Just one good one. There are plenty good ones. Step on the button. . Wwe also have a separate battery for the windlass so you don't need a 1000$ worth of wire with voltage drop. 160 AH works fine because you rarely hit it hard. And you can keep that battery charged easy with a small panel. And have lighter wire from your house bank to be sure it's always topped
Put a reef in, just in case - and a few minutes later ... CASE!
The good thing is: these days you have this kind of precise forecast - only a few decades ago, this thing would have hit you by total surprise. Probably without any reef.

Hello Ruth an Garrett, i would discourage you about hydraulics on a wooden boat. When things go wrong, and they will eventually, it is very messy. The oil will soak the wood making it useless.
I would recommend electric with a high amp battery close by. In that way the power cables are as short as possible and the charging cables can be a much thinner gauge.

Come on Garrett, you want to power your windlass, You have a battery drill, presumably with 2 speeds, a means to charge it and an active and adaptive mind. Make an adaptor! eg, if your windlass has a square drive shaft that goes into the handle, then a socket should fit over it, and an extension fit into your drill chuck? if that doesn't work, invent something else! Yes, it will put a lot of strain on your drill, but only for a short period once in a while, and it may not be powerful enough after all, but will cost a minimal amount to try, and maybe a good backup plan if a future electric or hydraulic windlass fails!
I adapted a pipe threader to power my windlass when I have out lots of scope.
You could set up a hydraulic driver with a bit that fits into windlass, it could have snap on conectors so it can be stored below when not in use, this way your not making any change to the windlass🏴☠
I've been wondering for a while now and seeing you widened the gaf to have better hoist performance: why dont you install those wooden balls on the ropes that hold the sail to the mast? It will make hoisting the sail SOOOOOO MUCH easier! XXX

I've seen people use battery powered ½" angle drills to drive winches. Probably work well on the windlass

Hydraulic is another thing to carry. Worlds going electric, get your buddies. But use it like what it is, a starter motor. Quite a few are just Nissan starter motors inside that casing. So drop an anchor by clutch. And raise an anchor for 3o seconds, rest for 10....it will not wear out. And go to some alternator shops to repair after you have uncased it. In Mazatlan there are shops in front of the fish boat docks that sell wood. More honest city than PV, but noisy where you were.
Get a high torque drill and adapter to fit the windless spline. Electric lift!

Stay away from hydraulic windlasses. They require a running engine, an oil tank, belts and expensive hoses. Ask me how I know. A good electric windlass, expensive yes, will work best. A previous suggestion was a seperate battery, also good if you have the room for it up forward, thus minimizing expensive cable runs. You have to ask yourself, “what is my back worth?”
Winches and stuff are nice but what I would want is some sort of seating so I wouldn’t be down on the deck so much.
I'm wondering lately what a pedal powered manual windlass might look like, or if same already exists?
Have you considered a Dewalt DCD443B (or other similar brand) + the appropriate drive adapter to your windless? I saw something similar on Sailing Doodles to drive the winches.
Would old fashioned hammocks not be better for sleeping in?

What about a Millwaukee super hawg for you windless?
hydraulics are pretty easy, but electric added to your existing would be much easier.
How about one of those motorized winch handles?
Out of curiosity, what did y’all use as a doubler on the inside of the solar panel flange? I worry about the long term stretching and elongating of those holes in that flange where you mounted the wood?

It's spelt: gybing - turning the boat so that the wind moves from one side of the wind to the other by turning downwind so that the wind direction crossed over the stern of the vessel.
