    IT WAS INSANE FOR 1993, really fond memories of being 6 or 7, playing it on my dad's first PC, i think we installed it using 3 or 4 floppy discs.

    I remember the graphics at the time just blowing me away. This was probably the first widespread use of texture mapping that I ever saw until Doom came along at the end of the same year. In my opinion, Indycar was at its peak in the early 90s and this sim had all the cars, teams, and tracks in it. I was a big road course fan, so Laguna Seca and Long Beach were my favorite tracks. I poured many hours in to car setups and testing, and though I tried many races, I don’t ever remember winning one.

    • @OpenGL4ever
      @OpenGL4ever Рік тому

      DOOM doesn't have a real 3d engine, it's more 2.5D.
      But IndyCar Racing (1993) is definitely one of the first games to make use of texture mapping, along with Frontier: Elite II (October 1993) and F-15 Strike Eagle 3 (December 1992).

    I bought the game when it was released. The problem I had with this game were two things:
    1. My computer, a 486DX 33 MHz with ISA ET4000/W32 graphics card, was too slow to play the game smoothly with all details turned on. The computer didn't have VLB, only ISA.
    2. The resolution of 320x200 pixels was actually far too low to drive the vehicle safely at these speeds. Curves were therefore actually recognized much too late because the low resolution did not allow earlier recognition. So you had to use other expedients to remember when to slow down. You also had to memorize the route in your head, so you could practically play it blind. And the time required for that was too great for me. In principle, I could have saved myself this game and the Thrustmaster steering wheel that I bought with it. It has also aged poorly for these two reasons.
    The second game IndyCar Racing 2 had an SVGA resolution and was therefore certainly much more suitable, but I really didn't have the right computer for it. So I skipped the second game. Once I had a suitable computer, this genre no longer interested me.
    But the first game was really nice to take a quick look at it. Because of these two disadvantages, I didn't play it intensively.

    Great game. I played for countless hours. I remember overlapping the 2nd in some track where I had an incredible setup (I don´t remember which one was it now). But I always wondered what are those "F" "R" "B" levers on the left. They affect the steering and ability to corner somehow. Just don´t know exactly how. They should mean "front", "rear", "balance" ? The keys next to the "enter" enable the adjustment. What´s it suppose to really do ?

    • @ScottOmatic
      @ScottOmatic 6 років тому +3

      Those are the Front and Rear Roll-Bars, and the Brake Bias. The front and rear bars will allow minute handling adjustments while inside the cockpit.. One such reason could be when you burn fuel the car gets lighter and the center of gravity might change slightly as well as the handling, you can move one or both bars around to counter the changes in the car.

    • @ScottOmatic
      @ScottOmatic 6 років тому

      @@HF1600ie I think I typically modified Ace.. but used a wheel. It really pays to have an analog controller over stabbing the keyboard. Indy is a lot harder than Michigan because the corners are more abrupt and tighter, it's a less fluid track so it is a lot harder using keys. I would probably lower the steering lock a bit so each stab of the key impacts the car less, run a stiff enough setup so the car does not get too loose when you are stabbing the keys in the corners as well... and maybe run with the Buick in the back for the extra horsepower. :)

      Correct, had to do with the licensing and the separate sanctioning bodies of the Indianapolis 500 race and the Indycar series. This is 256 color, not 16, right?

    • @OpenGL4ever
      @OpenGL4ever Рік тому

      Yes. IndyCar Racing was using VGA at a resolution of 320x200 pixels and 256 colors. As far as i can remember, that game also does not offer EGA graphics mode, thus no 16 colors you needed a VGA card and this does use 256 colors.

    • @warrax111
      @warrax111 Рік тому

      @@OpenGL4ever well, it isnt very good shaded, so I wasn't sure. It looks like, 200 colors out of those 256 are unused.

    • @OpenGL4ever
      @OpenGL4ever Рік тому

      @@warrax111 Now I understand what you mean. Well, in this case 256 color means that a 256 color mode is used in which each pixel is assigned 1 byte for the color information. This means 2^8 bits = 256 colors are possible. However, this does not necessarily mean that all of these possible colors are actually used.
      Gouraud shading also costs performance and I don't think Gouraud shading was used in this game. If there are color gradients, then they were manually incorporated into the textures. The game also doesn't use texture filtering, as was later common with 3D accelerators. That would have cost far too much performance back then. The game does only use software rendering. Everything has to be calculated by the CPU, the graphics card doesn't do anything.

    • @warrax111
      @warrax111 Рік тому

      @@OpenGL4everI know, I already animated in Animator program under DOS during 1996.
      Yeah, there was 256 colors palette, obviously, you can have 256 colors available , but use just one. :)

    • @warrax111
      @warrax111 Рік тому

      @@OpenGL4ever by shading, I've mean manually shaded it. You don't need any more CPU power for that, just better animators, that know to draw nicer (use more grades of grey for shading, etc...)
      I saw some good animated and shaded 16 color pictures, and they looked better than poorly animated 256-color pictures, that's why I've asked.
      It was mastery to draw in 16 colors, and some animators were really good in it.

      DOS stands for Disc Operating System. An operating system used on x86 Personal Computers. At that time a PC with DOS was the best gaming system you could afford. Consoles were cheap and inferior gaming systems. They still are. The PC is still unbeaten to this day. Real gamers therefore play on a high-quality gaming system, i.e. a PC. Only casual gamers play on consoles.
