Running at frozen Bramshall Road parkrun, Uttoxeter. Risky parkrun tourism to a Winter Wonderland

- This was parkrun tourism at its riskiest! Setting off to drive to a parkrun location far away to run when it's below freezing. There is such a high risk of cancellation but for some reason my gut told me that this parkrun trip would be okay... and luckily we pulled it off! In fact, if I'd stayed at home then I'd have missed parkrun, as my home parkrun at Woodhouse Moor, which is hardly ever cancelled, was cancelled!
Once we'd solved the issue of the frozen van door then we set off south as the sun rose. The temperature got colder and colder as we approached Derby. But luckily, Bramshall Road parkrun posted nice and early that they were going to go ahead! What a result! As the temperature dropped below minus five we arrived in a Winter Wonderland with ice formations like none I've ever seen before!
I had chosen Bramshall Road parkrun as I am chasing a Wilson Index of over 100 and only needed three numbers to get me there (68,74 and 99)! What a blessing that Bramshall Road parkrun was having it's 74th run! It's a course that on paper looks like your standard three lapper in a park. This run is so much more than that! The course design is exceptional. Multiple chances for high fives, paths that intersect so that you see other parkrunners so much, it felt super friendly, social and supportive! Add in the kindest, friendliest marshals, a Run Director in a tutu, and even bubbles, and you've got the magic that is Bramshall Road parkrun.
Huge thanks to the team for a magical morning, I couldn't have loved it any more than I did!

Well done Nicola. It looks like a beautiful morning. We are starting to get some of that weather in the US here in northern Utah. I've run on my local bike trail many times in the morning after a frozen night and been treated to icy sights. Wish we had a park run or two here -- the race season is pretty much over until mid-January but on the plus side I can focus on training / recovery etc. I raced a lot in 2023. As always, I absolutely love your ParkRun tourism videos. One of my favorite things to do on a Monday and watch your race experience.

Definitely a chilly one Nicola, surprised the bubble machine didn't freeze. Those frozen cobwebs had the vibe of Spiderman after a 2 litre tub of ice cream ❄
Lol they were incredible weren't they?! I've never seen anything like it! The bubble machine did freeze 🤣 it was gone on the next 2 laps but was ace for the first lap 😃😍

Congratulations on reaching another milestone. What an achievement. You mentioned last week in a comment that your next run would be your 650th.
I haven’t run in subzero conditions, but have done some cycling in the cold, and that looked like a lot of fun.

o wow this was a great one to watch loved the trees and the course i have 5 more park runs to do and 5th one will be my 25th which i am planning to do at Huddersfield not sure when yet with all these races coming up and i can not wait to do the Grassington 5 mile trail race

Very similar to our local parkrun (Manor Field, Whittlesey), very friendly volunteers and with an average number of 75-80 participants, it never feels crowded.
I have reynauds too and can recommend woolly mittens for keeping hands warm.
I wear two pairs and they’re very warm. 😊

I think those ice crystals are called hoarfrost, but there really should be a prettier name for something so beautiful. All the ice-covered spider webs made it look like the trees had been decorated for Christmas.

It’s a Hoar Frost, when water vapour in the site hits already frozen surfaces, it then freezes into crystals. Frosticles sounds much nicer though!!!

Ooh... I'd totally grow a beard to see what this is like 🤣 that must have been cool! I imagine it's a lot better on beards than on the top of your head. Mine melted almost as soon as I'd stopped running as there is just too much heat given off! Huge congratulations on the run. My parkrun PB is 23:00 so there... That's your next target 💪 let me know when you smash it 😃 getting a PB at parkrun is such an awesome feeling! 🎉

@@NicolaRuns More advice Nicola,as you may know,I started running last year and am doing my first winter trail marathon in January,do you recommend a waterproof running jacket?
@@alanrobinson2229 I don't recommend anything specifically, I don't have one I'm loyal to. It's more about fit for me... I like having one that fits over my pack so I don't have to mess about taking it on and off. In terms of money just have a think about whether you're going to be using it in extreme mountain conditions where you'd want to buy something decent or whether you're just looking for a mandatory kit list waterproof, in which case check out Harrier Trail Running kit. They're really reasonably priced! Good luck jacket shopping 😊
