Sir Edward Cuthbert Bairstow was born in Huddersfield on 22 August 1874 and died in York on 1 May 1946. He was an English organist and composer in the Anglican church music tradition.
He studied organ with John Farmer at Balliol College, Oxford, and while articled under Frederick Bridge of Westminster Abbey received tuition from Walter Alcock. He studied organ and theory at the University of Durham, receiving the Bachelor of Music in 1894, and the Doctor of Music in 1901.[1]
After holding posts in London, Wigan and Leeds, he served as organist of York Minster from 1913 to his death, when he was succeeded by his former pupil Francis Jackson. He was knighted in 1932.
Notorious for his terseness and bluntness, Bairstow did not always endear himself to others. Asked whether he would be willing to follow the example of his predecessor at York, Thomas Tertius Noble, and go to the USA, he replied that he would "rather go to the devil". Comfortably ensconced in Yorkshire, where he was a close friend of the equally blunt Dr Moody, Organist at Ripon Cathedral, he refused the offer to succeed Frederick Bridge at Westminster Abbey. He instead recommended his erstwhile pupil Ernest Bullock, who was duly appointed to the post.

I rode a train from London to Kings. Whether its architectural splendor or the magnificent choir, I was never alone in my haste to reach the sacred portals.

We have twice a year introduced an evensong of Gregorian chant to our worship; what a blessing and a return to this ancient tradition.

    PSALM 67.
    Deus misereatur
For the choir director; with stringed instruments. A Psalm. A Song.
    0:00
GOD be merciful unto us, and bless us : and shew us the light of his countenance, and be merciful unto us:
2 That thy way may be known upon earth : thy saving health among all nations.
    0:28
3 Let the people praise thee, O God : yea, let all the people praise thee.
4 O let the nations rejoice and be glad : for thou shalt judge the folk righteously, and govern the nations upon earth.
    0:55
5 Let the people praise thee, O God : let all the people praise thee.
6 Then shall the earth bring forth her increase : and God, even our own God, shall give us his blessing.
7 God shall bless us : and all the ends of the world shall fear him.
    1:31
    Gloria Patri

A beautiful rendition of this equally beautiful psalm. you may like to know that Bairstow's friend Dr Moody of Ripon cathedral, was his immediate predecessor at Wigan Parish Church. I am their current successor.

I had it pasted in the back of my Parish Psalter as we also often used it for the Magnificat. No idea where the Choir Master got it from, sorry?

I know it been a long time, but if you’re still looking for this chant, it can be found here: www.cpdl.org/wiki/index.php/Double_chant_in_E_flat_major_(Edward_Bairstow). Click on the PDF icon to display the score. Hope that helps - however belatedly!
