I cook my beans and I ferment the beans (analogous to saurkraut type of fermentation used for cabbage). I plan to dehydrate that bean paste and take it on hiking trips as food.
Another thing you can do is grind up dried beans into a powder and add the powder to soups and stews to thicken and add nutrition. I've also added the bean powder to breads I've made for added nutrition . 😏
I mill beans also. I started back in the 90s. Have you concluded the amount of liquid needed for substituting beans for wheat in bread being any different?
They look great. I have been doing this for several years. I soak my dehydrated pinto beans in a bowl in the Fridge for 8 to 12 hours. Then heat them up. If you soak them slow long enough they come completely back.
Thanks for this recipe ....I finished making this yesterday, and it is fabulous...its in a large air tight jar...today I sauteed some red onions and red peppers in bacon fat, added a half cup of the mix and a cup and a half of water, with a tad bit more salt and a bit of cayenne...oh man it is delish...my family loves it...there are so many things I can do with this...one is making soup ...I have a large jar of dehydrated mixed veg with boulion ....boil a pot of water, add veg and some of the bean mix, and voila ,,, a nice thick delicious spicy veg, bean soup...would be great for camping
I thought this would be interesting and now I want to try it. It is only 2 of us and this will work great to make as much or as little as we need. Thanks for the tip on conditioning jars never knew that. I have lucky so far, but now I will be conditioning from now on. You're sounding better and stronger.
Oh I’m doing this. I don’t eat a lot of beans (keto). But as an occasional treat, I would love a small amount of refried beans with some nachos. This and your version of baked beans are on the list.
Jeni, what a wonderful recipe rehydrate beans and your mix gives it a little bonus great for the Travel trailer camping. Now I have to make theses before our next camping trip to Williams Az. Going to give your recipe to my sister. Thank You, Jeni 🥰
I am so super impressed you come up with these recipe, also envious, all your recipes I have tried so far I love, LOVE. Again this week I dehydrating also !!
Oh wow! I never thought about dehydrating beans. I have run beans through my grain mill and made flour. Though baking with it is fine, making refried beans leaves no texture of partial beans. Milled bean flours work well as thickener. Have you ever used bean flour? If so, your opinion on dehydrated (versus) bean flour for refried beans?
I make my refried bean mix with beans straight outta the bag. Iron them in the blender until almost smooth. I do sort for rocks, grit, etc. before blending up. Then add seasonings. Cuts prep time to about 10 minutes.
How do you feel about split pea soup, Jeni? I've been wanting to make a big batch of split pea soup, puree it and then dehydrate. My goal is to copycat the good old Lipton's powdered soup mix for pea soup they used to sell a long time ago. Seems like it would be a similar process to the way you did these beans. I'm definitely going to give them a try this winter, thanks for showing us how you do yours! Hope you are feeling better.
I love this so much!!! I have refried ready pintos canned but I have so many dried pinto beans too that I could start rotating through them faster if I did this. I love refried beans soooo much!! Great idea
Why didn't I try this sooner ,OMG ! Thanks for the video to show just how easy this was . I made them yesterday and I am so happy I did ,it was so easy and they ate so ,so good, thanks Jen !
Yes this is definitely a good idea for burritos and bean dip. In California we have a Taco Bell chain and their burritos have a layer of smooth beans. Using the blender Im sure I can make the texture how I want it smooth or corse for those in my family that like whole beans. I’m just trying to get as much on the shelves as possible. Thanks Jenny for sharing
Question re salt and beans, does anyone know if that holds true for bullion? Also, I saw something similar to this that I can't wait to try, fast beans. Basically it's just cooking then dehydrating the beans for storage. The idea is that if you are in a hurry or shtf and you don't want to use a ton of water & fuel, you have beans that cook up quickly but don't take up as much room as cans
I have had trouble with redrying powders blowing around in my dehydrator so I spread on a sheet pan and drying in the oven with light on overnight. This might help for some.
Our water is super hard so I use filtered water and no salt until right before they’re done. I’ve never thought of dehydrating whole cooked beans before. I’m going to try this. It sounds like it is a very convenient food. We eat a lot of Mexican food. I have a quick and easy chalupa with refried beans. I just heat a corn tortilla in the microwave with a smear of beans and top with cheese and then nuke in microwave for about 45 sec. Top with salsa. I could eat several! Your orange bowl is gorgeous! Where did you get it?
Jeni, this was great stuff! I love watching how you take a type of food change it then bring it back to another form.Science class gin.Don`t have an Instnt Pot but I could cook the beans in my pressure cooker? Will watch your video on the refried beans and canning them. Also, are your bowls from Pioneer Woman they are beautiful. Thanks for your info on this.Looking good and you sound better.
Thank you so much! 😊 Yes, Pioneer Woman bowls. You can cook the beans any way you like regular pressure cooker or even in a pot. No special equipment needed! You can even oven dry them after. 😁
I can barely get my grandkids to eat beans, I may try adding the powdered beans in other foods or may bean dip. They don't think bean dip taste like beans. Not really sure they know it is beans. Lol. They're young.
I Really love the Tao Bell refried bean they have at drive-in. I've been trying to duplicate it but can't find the right recipe. Do you have a recipe that is not too hot? The melted cheese over the top makes it perfect. I'm going to make your dehydrated recipe and keep trying until I get it good.
I had someone tell me canned beans take up too much shelf space. Though I think that was a dumb thing to say, I thought I'd try something extra for someone who may not wan canned beans on their shelf. 😊
I cook my beans and I ferment the beans (analogous to saurkraut type of fermentation used for cabbage). I plan to dehydrate that bean paste and take it on hiking trips as food.
I just saw RedRose Homestead dehydrate beans for quick cooking. Great concept!!
Another thing you can do is grind up dried beans into a powder and add the powder to soups and stews to thicken and add nutrition. I've also added the bean powder to breads I've made for added nutrition . 😏
Great idea! Thanks! 😊
I mill beans also. I started back in the 90s. Have you concluded the amount of liquid needed for substituting beans for wheat in bread being any different?
Do you grind dry uncooked beans for the flour?
@@patriciagraham4786 not yet but I will when I get a mill!
Yes I grind it into a powder with my wheat grinder that of course grinds other grains 🤗
oh! excellent! Beans are excellent. I like eating them after I ferment them. I will dehydrate fermented beans.
They look great. I have been doing this for several years. I soak my dehydrated pinto beans in a bowl in the Fridge for 8 to 12 hours. Then heat them up. If you soak them slow long enough they come completely back.

Wonderful! You are so welcome! 😊
I've been cooking my beans very done, mashing, and then dehydrating. Chunky version. I definitely need to try your version.
Oh my gosh! I can’t wait to make this powder to have on hand😋😋😋
Hi Jenni this is a great idea I think it would be great in a seven-layer bean dip thank you so much for sharing this recipe and have a wonderful day 🤗
You are so welcome! You have a wonderful night! 😊
This is super good to add to your camping and backpacking meals.
This sounds like it would be a really good thing to have on hand

Split pea soup would work the same way! I am feeling much better, thank you! 😊
So the soup itself I think would be fine I’d be concerned if there are ham bits as those could go rancid.
@@coralkarrass1834 I would do a vegitarian version and add bullion and ham when cooking.
Provident Preppers have an instant split pea recipe in which the raw split peas are ground to a flour and it hydrates within a few minutes.

Amen on the bacon grease for refried beans and thanks for this video. I'm gonna do this !!

I don’t have a Taco Bell recipe, just mine that I already posted. 😊
Could you put up the seasoning that you put in your beans on here ?
I included the link with the seasoning recipe. 😊
Interesting recipe.
Brilliant.
Great idea,, 👍
I am going to try this. My son loves bean dip and refried beans. How much would the 1/2 cup beans feed?
After rehydrating it will make about 1 cup, so it depends on how much your fam eats. 😊
