When these have stood for a while. Turn petrol on and full choke and let it stand a few minutes. Open throttle fully wide open and close half a dozen times. This squirts a little fuel into the manifold. Now with full choke and no throttle kick it over. I say no throttle assuming everything is set up right. When hot set the throttle cable to have a couple of MM play. just a slight amount of slack on the cable. This stops the slide rising when throttle is fully closed as that is one of the main problems for poor starting. When they're set up right and you have the knack they are real easy starters but unlike 2T engines everything has to be exactly right. From my experiences with the XL's & TL's. I've owned 6 of them now and think they're the best small cc 4T engine ever built.. But you need to know the correct starting procedure. This one sounds as if no fuel was getting through. Once it started the engine would drag fuel in. As I say opening and closing the throttle squirts a little fuel in to prime it..
At 10:16 you can see the timing mark lines up on the crank end: ua-cam.com/video/n50JheJBwW0/v-deo.html And on the cam shaft there are also timing marks that has to line up - and that is it.
Dude!! I've seen Harleys start easier!! What was the problem? I'm guessing you have a fuel peacock that has a "run" setting, and a "prime" setting, and you didn't use prime. Probably took awhile for gas to fill the float bowl??
I had one of these in the late 80s, wish I still had it.

how did you insure that the cam shaft went back in in the exact same position as when it came out (relative to the crank etc)?

I tried to remove cam cover on Honda XL500S , 1980. No chances .. engine needs to be taken out.. or am I wrong?
I'm not sure about the 500.
On the 250 it was no big problem.
@@mischiefgarage8882 I saw it was so easy for you. thanks for sharing
I really enjoyed this, I like your careful methodical approach. You can work on my bike anytime!
Thanks Ken, appreciate it.
good job!
Excelente trabalho. Linda moto! Gostei do prolongador do paralama dianteiro!
What oil
Bei mir dauert es noch 3 Tage, dann kann ich meine sanierte 1979er endlich anmelden. Toi, toi, toi! 🙂
what exhaust is that
It came with the bike, so I don't know. Sorry.
What manual were you using?
Hi, It was the Haynes manual for the Honda XL/XR 250/500

I'm not exactly sure why it took so long. before and after it starts fine. I think you might be right, that the float bowl was not properly filled.
Solo espichandome el closs de sale la tapa sola
No hay necesidad de golpear así con el destornillador , puede quedar con fuga
Quando pegar não desliga mais misericórdia 😂
I wanna ride
Me too 😎🏍️
I hate kicking mine over so much too!
Yeah, it was only after the timing chain replacement - it usually starts quite easily 😎
Automatic regulator!!!!
Thats not proper start up.... thats why your kicking the crap out of it and its not starting
