The design was so thoughtful, I was sure there would be a spare flint somewhere in there. Saw the spare fuel talk and thought "oh well, that's fine too I guess". The reserve-reserve flint caught me by surprise.
Long-lasting easy to use lighter is pretty well worth the price. I don't know if this is really quite a survival lighter, but honestly, it looks like it'd be perfect outdoors.
BUY ONE. This is one of my three favorite physical possessions in the world. I have one of these, the same diamond knurled grip version. I am in love with it. Still, YEARS later. To the point I wish I didn't quit smoking to have an excuse to have it all the time. I am not a consumerist person, I don't have many nice things besides my car and PC. This was an 'out in a limb' purchase I made years ago when I didn't really even have the money for it in college. I am so glad I got it. It is a truly covetable item. EVERYONE loves it as soon as they see it. I have never had something that demands conversation and attention so much. More than a rolex, more than a CCW, more than whipping out cash; this thing gets discussed and passed around when it comes out every time. And, it's practical. Waterproof, airtight to not off gas fuel (it works). Not goofy and ridiculously tacky like so many $5 Chinese dragon or deck of cards lighter, or some rope using traditional field lighter. It is a SOLID build, made to .000 tolerances and you can tell. It feels amazing in the hand. The movements are all smooth as butter. My only singular complaint is the locking mechanism. You have to unscrew it ~8 times and then lower the guard to then flick it. It isn't fast, and doesn't have a satisfying zippo open or fancy way to make it look cool. It's a two-handed open, or can reasonably be done one handed but slow and clumsy. The top does get hot, it's all metal, it gets too hot to hold and concern for burning clothing if put in a pocket if it is alight for ~5-6 seconds. At 8 seconds it will need to be set down as the heat will slowly spread down the body - I suppose another concern has been that the airtight sealed metal tube full of fuel is very hot and is an ignition source itself... if left on too long and closed up I could see it popping, but it would take user neglegence to make this happen. If you get the chance I would highly recommend picking one up, iirc mine was $180 around 10 years ago, I'd seen them as high as $300, but they seem to be back down ~$120 used anymore. Hold out for the diamond knurled version!!! It looks like jewelry the way it reflects light. Imo, it is at least twice as good looking as the straight line version, and the plain smooth one is just alright. Their 'L' line is a great option that's a bit more budget friendly ~$60. Doesn't look as astonishing, but I'm sure it's built well if anything like their 'S' line.
Awesome lighter. Love the quality and functionality. Too bad I'm on a 10 dollar Walmart Zippo budget, but that doesn't stop me from admiring a well made product.
I bought my son the DOUGLAS FIELD "L" brass model. SMOOTHE, that's how best to describe it. The threads are buttery, ignition is very easy and a constant spark each time. VERY VERY WELL MADE !!! Fuel Lasts to....I highly suggest it. I want the FIELD "S".....I am an avid camper, outdoorsman, cig smoker, and I think it will do me fine.
Probably the coolest lighter I ever seen. I was sick of piezoelectric braking all the time and this thing it seems is so sooooo much better and reliable and not to mention how sexy that looks
too bad the flame canister dont pull out like an imco but wont that rubber seal under the flame melt if it's lit too long? these things get hot quick unless its heat resistant rubber
Price is subjective guys. Had one of these for about two years with the smooth body in brass and I think it's great for occasional use. Only criticism is that the flame is a bit too deep inside the storm gaurd to use for some tasks even though it doesn't look it in this video. I have tried adjusting the wick and such and no luck. It's an easy think to get around though. At the end of the day it is an expensive novelty, if that's your thing, awesome and even if it's not don't you dare try to tell me you didn't think this was awesome before you heard the price.
Zippo could take a couple lessons from this lighter I've always thought that zippo could put a small tube on the opposite side of the current screw to hold spare flint. Same thing with the flint that touches the striker. This lighters got a way better design because the spring isn't exposed. Idk how they would add spare fuel but I always seem to run out and forget to refill it. If zippo would add some sort of seal to the bottom of the insert. I feel it would last a little longer. I know you can buy them but I want zippo to do it so that the insert will still sit flush with case.
So if you take the flint piston out, is there room for a back up match? Hehe.....very cool lighter Jeff, thanks for showing it! I wouldn't pay that much for one, but I'm not a big lighter collector. For those who do collect them, very neat for the collection!
How's the Field-S 4 years down the line? the cap and wick cup came apart on me and I just never got around to sending it in for repair. It's just a glorified zippo at this point and the fuel evaporates as such.
check out the field L version of this lighter it gives up some waterproofness in exchange for solving your quit lighting issue and is also a very good lighter.
If the lid doesn't close how do you change the setting on the ballbearing ring? I have read that somebody did it but didn't specifically elaborate about it. I'm afraid that I will brake it. Is it a clockwise or counter thread? What instruments are suggested to use. Looks very tight to me. Thanks for anybodies advice!
Meanwhile I found out something! The users manual says that you just have to oil the lid ring, but never mentiones what to use. I tried some oils (coocking oil, WD 40 etc.) I found out that the best is to use oils which are used in air-cooled engines. My friend has a Harley. I dipped a piece of cotton swab into it, put it on the ring carefully, so that the sparkstone doesn't recieve any, waited a day, dipped it again! Never had that problem since! It doesent matter how hot it gets, it closes. One more thing! I didn't just swab the ring but I rotated the ring around its place, on the metal.
I always burn the tip of the wick and twist it and then get the tip through and pull it in with tweezers works even with the thick bulk chinese wicks on. Normal oil lighters
Awesome thanks for doing a vid on this one man. Those things are really cool looking and i’ve wanted one for a long time. I just haven’t been able to justify the expensive price. I will probably break down and buy one at some point. I’m just worried i would lose it if i carried it on the regular. How do you carry yours to not lose it? Does it ever start to come out of your pocket?
And also my Douglas field S lighter diamond cut. I trim the wick so there’s no more black stuff on it but every time I sparked the lighter the flame is big for about five seconds and then it fucking dwindled down to nothing
Make sure the wick is correctly set inside, going through the container with cotton all around it. If you have bought it second hand, consider replacing the wick and why not the cotton too because if someone has tried to burn other than dedicated fuel in it, unburned residues may have blocked the fuel flow. Using Zippo brand wick would give peace of mind.
Love mine, have you tried any other flints besides the Douglass ones? I hate to think those are the only ones at about a buck a piece. They are bigger than Zippos.
I assume the lighter is chrome plated (?). What is the metal used for the components? Aluminum will get far hotter than brass, and brass will be hotter than steel. Is it all-steel?
I’m getting one of these. Very nice. Just what I was looking for. I’ve been looking at different trench lighters. Nothing of this quality in the manufacturing. Let us know how long the main chamber holds fuel.
Cool lighter it's diffrent reliable lighter that it doesn't evaporate out of the lighter and it can carry extra fuel with it is a plus. I carry a small bic lighter it very rarely gets any use. I have a butane blue flame lighter for my arts and craft bench.
Nice review. Love this lighter. I’m not a smoker but keep one as part of my EDC kit. Great for sealing ends of paracord, etc. Question: where do we get spare parts (flints, etc.)? As an aside, I’ll be in Japan in the Spring and will be looking at picking one up there. Thanks again. Edit: found the parts on Amazon, duh.😉
So is the Exotac Titan light, but I'd still love to have one of these. As long as you screw the cap down on an exotac and treat it like you do a Zippo as far as safety goes, that thing will hold charge well over a year. Fewer O rings too!
@@The8thCharacter My Imco broke a few months ago, i think i had a Chinese one, my local tobacconist said that they have stopped making them, but i just found out that Etsy is a good place for the older Austrian models at good prices. Rumour has it that inside the spare flint is a spare lighter.
And repeat
That would actually be really cool if that was the case. Like some kind of nesting doll of lighters
You must actually be fun at parties😂
Was expecting you to open up the spare flint for another surprise
