      Versatile horsemanship. people today want their horses ready and perfect within a month. I have found people cannot read their horses, they don't seem to understand their psychology. Just my thoughts. Hope you can convert people. I'm already on your side., also don't believe in hitting a horse , I find my voice is sufficient.

      I am so sorry Brandi. It breaks my heart to see your pain and how Miss Kitty feels. Maybe you can set up an account so we could donate some money. I know you don't want to prolong Miss Kitty's discomfort, but you do want to do all that should be done. Is there some place in your area that does cremation? I know it doesn't seem very realistic to do this, but with the snow and the ground being frozen maybe that is an option in your area.

    You shared this with me a little while ago. The hardest part is making a decision on which turn in the road to make. You know that she is old and possibly at the end of her life, but then maybe she’s not and just needs to get over a rough patch. You want most of all to make her comfortable, but what does that mean? It doesn’t mean absorbing vet bills chasing after something that can’t be fixed. It can also mean that euthanasia, as awful as that sounds, is kinder than prolonging suffering. What my prayer for you right now is that you are shown very clearly what direction to take, and that the guessing game maze you are in changes quickly and does not drag on too long. I’m here with tears in my eyes seeing what you’re going through and remembering how I knew it was time for my 14 yr old golden retriever when one day she could not get up to walk. Don’t ever say to yourself, “If only I had done this, or if only....”. My heart is with you, Brandi. Miss Kitty is so special.

      kk doc Such true and kind words. Every time I have made the decision to euthanize, my only regret was that I didn’t do it sooner. The guilt that I let them suffer too long. I am determined not to let that happen with my old dog. If he is still with me come may, he will be 14. He is struggling alot to get around now and his appetite is not been good. I am putting whatever I can find on his food to encourage him to eat. But I know his time is near. Miss Kitty looks very tired and depressed. Such a beautiful horse.

    • @kkdoc7864
      @kkdoc7864 4 роки тому +1

      LindyTN I am so sorry you are going through this, too. There really isn’t anything one can say to help someone feel better when in the midst of the turmoil. But I think the best advice I gave to myself was to not look back on decisions made with any sense of guilt. It does nothing constructive, doesn’t change anything, and only adds to the horrible sadness of losing your friend. I tell my own daughter to not do the “If only....” thing with tough situations. Like if I would be seriously hurt in a car accident going to her house for dinner and so many other scenarios similar to that. How unproductive would that be if she kept going down that rabbit hole, “If only I had picked her up.....If only I hadn’t invited her that day....”.
      I do hope you know which step to take next without second guessing yourself. So hard.

    I'm currently in the process of taming a young feral cat that began one year ago. I have to be acutely sensitive to when I'm pushing too hard in attempts to get him used to my touch. The time is approaching when he must go to the vet, otherwise I would let him follow his own path in the household. So far he has shown no aggression toward the other cats and he doesn't stink too badly, but eventually I will have to pick him up and put him in a carrier. We aren't there yet.
    One thing I notice about Miss Kitty is that she doesn't mind being touched on the nose but dislikes it further back on the jaw. Teeth, maybe? How does she react to touching on the neck or body? On our mare's last day, she leaned into grooming on her neck while we were waiting for the vet to arrive. Normally, horses don' t like being touched on the face at all.

    • @niveusnimbus
      @niveusnimbus 4 роки тому +1

      If your carrier is big enough, so he can walk into it by himself, you don't need to pick him up. If he's food motivated, try clicker training to get him to walk into the carrier freely. Offer it as a bed, too. That doesn't really solve the being touched by the vet issue. But at least getting in and out of the carrier won't be so traumatic. I've trained my cat like that and he walks in just fine every time, cause it means treats or getting away from the scary vet.

    • @martineinfrance
      @martineinfrance 4 роки тому

      Leave the carrier open permanently with a blanket, food, catnips, whatever he likes, then the carrier will become a nice and safe place to be, even sleep in it, ... So that the day you need to carry him, just close the door to avoid stressing him by picking him up.. Patience is needed but it works to avoid trauma in a feral or wild animal needed to be trapped

    The last part is the worst part. I'm so very sorry. Watching someone you love feel badly is horrific, and I really hope no one is giving you grief about any of it. You have plenty of that, just from the situation. Truly, there are financial limitations- in a perfect world, where you have unlimited resources, there aren't, but you have a business to run, a lot of mouths to feed, and a family to consider. Brandi, there is also Miss Kitty to consider, which I know you have foremost in your mind- if you had all the money in the world, it still wouldn't be right to keep putting her through endless procedures. As you said, keeping her comfortable is the most important thing, and being able to tell her what you need to say to her, and when you have the few minutes, spend it near her. Make the videos. Educate people on how to do this the right way. Healing hugs.

    That young lady is the perceptive nature of a true horse person vs any other person. These things can only be learned by experience and exposure to the animals and the inborn nature that nearly all true horse people possess. That’s not to say others are incapable of such perceptibility but its very hard to teach something that comes naturally to most of us horse people.
    You will eventually find what the problem is, and I have no doubt be able to address it appropriately.

      @@VersatileHorsemanship Brandi you already know this, but I will share it for those on your channel that don’t.
      Typically, what should occur when you have what we old hard boots call an ADR (ain’t doing right) situation with a horse.
      #1: Take a note pad and writing instrument with you. Get your thermometer, stethoscope, clock, watch or timepiece (something with a sweep second hand or a stopwatch of some kind to time pulse and respirations and a pair of exam gloves. Observe the horse and their surroundings carefully for anything that is not normal. Make a note of your findings.
      #2: Take the horses' vitals TPR, CR (ie) Temp, Pulse, Respirations & capillary refill. If possible, try to smell their breath and notice if it smells wrong to you. Make a note of your findings.
      #3: Check stall or immediate area for evidence of recent bowel movement, if found, note consistency and volume. Make a note of your findings.
      #4: Take all the information you have gathered along with a list of any medications the horse is or has been on recently as well as any recent changes to their feed rations or your grain or hay supply. Or recent stress-related occurrences that you are aware of with this animal.
      #5: contact your veterinarian and relay said information in a clear calm manner then let the vet advise you on the next step.
      With the information provided from the first four steps, your vet will have a very good foundation to make a judgment as to the need for a farm, call or not.
      Lastly continue to be observant for any improvement or further deterioration and do not panic but do keep notes. These are times for calm careful rational thought and observation to find a resolution to the problem.
      Just like my foaling kit, I always had a crash bag ready for just such occurrences when I was still in the business. It contained all the things I needed to do a preliminary examination and gather information for the vet. You can save precious minutes of back and forth questioning and your vet will love you for it. And if you’re capable of administering IV injections safely as well as other simple basic veterinary procedures. Your vet will learn to trust your information and often just make recommendations for things that you can do without resorting to an emergency vet call out. Nowadays we have the luxury of cell phones with the capability of transmitting video feeds directly to the vet, this can also be helpful in information sharing in a crisis.
      Remember, always do the basics and evaluate the obvious first, before pursuing the potential of something exotic.
      Print this out and keep it handy, you, your vet and your horse will be glad you did.

He had his head lowered..at first we thought his leg was bothering him..we cleaned out his hooves...he would walk really slow. And he also acted like his stomach was sensitive..he would lift one of his legs when we touched his belly..he really wanted to lie down in his stall..and he turned his back on us.so he definitely didnt want to be touched.we noticed when he pooped..it was really hard and not a lot when he did.luckily the issue resolved itself overnight. You are right in saying listen to your horse..and watch them close if they are not feeling good

    Poor Miss Kitty its written all over face n body language she isnt feeling well it makes me happy to know she finds comfort just being with her human. Sweet Miss Kitty I am sending you lots of love and you both are in my thoughts. I just had this conversation with my instructor after my lessons this morning about all the stupid stuff we did to our horses when we were kids we didnt know shit n it makes me sick thinking about some of the things I did to or with my horse not knowing any better. Things got better once I got involved with the local 4-H when I was a pre teen. At 16 I shattered. y pelvis I stopped riding for 33 years started taking lessons a year ago now and I was glad to see the girls at the barn are lot safer than I was at their age n are way more knowledgeable about horses in general compared to how it was for me as a young rider. I am sending good vibes for Miss Kitty to get better soon!!!

    I've been watching a TV prog called 'Dog: Impossible' and the guy in that taught most of the owners not to be overly touchy with their dogs. I never knew animals minded being petted all the time but it makes total sense. You can see it in Miss Kitty. Needing to be near for company but that's all. So important to allow animals their own boundaries and for us not to be offended when they set them. Im not a touchy feely person and can totally understand.

    I haven’t seen Miss Kitty recently, but notice the weight loss. Age and infirmity is all so complex and hard. I really like how you opened this video with discussion of understanding and respect for the horse. Getting that seems to be a growth curve even with the best of intentions. One of my favorite earth based spirituality and healing teachers, Sandra Ingerman, teaches the phrase, “May I step into your field of energy?”, which for a horse is enormous before actually coming close and considering physically touching. By taking that simple phrase to heart, be it horse, dog, cat, human, tree or river, just a form of courtesy that slowly changes ones approach. Doesn’t even have to be said aloud either to be understood. Just a little pause. I will hold Miss Kitty and you Brandi in my heart and intentions, that she can be comfortable with a measure of joy for as long as possible, and that you Brandi get all the support you need as she ages and time passes.

    That video you were talking about of the horse rearing. That was me, I know what I did wrong. I was in the moment and my friend (who was filming) was cheering me on to do it. I realize all my mistakes and that it wasn't the right thing to do. My instructor (who owns that pony) did set me straight. I just wanted to let you know ☺👍🏻 also that pony is (kind of) a lesson pony, but he's only ever used for experienced riders. Because, even though the rear in the video was forced, he does love rearing and bucking. Every time you ask him for a canter, he bucks or whenever he gets excited he rears! It's just his thing! Lol

      Masters Equine I have so much respect for you for commenting. The biggest thing I say in my barn is that if you do it, you need to own it and use it to teach others. There are some pretty entertaining, scary, funny, cringeworthy, and humbling stories that come up at horse camps! Education comes with a cost, we might as well make the most of it 😊

    My 34yo boss horse passed last Mar. His teeth were in terrible shape so I fed: vegetable oil [hi fat] (horses can tolerate up to 2c/feeding but let the poop tell you when to stop; start at a 1/4c per feeding), a good multivitamin, a complete feed, alfalfa flakes (processed hay, not baled hay) and salt plus sufficient warm water to make it a mash texture. Try adding an ulcer prevention product to sooth any GI upset. Beet pulp has no nutritional value. Warm water: either get bucket heater or use house water in gallon jug. I fenced off part of the pasture so he could use his stall but still go out and watch the herd. If weather permitted, he was fed outside stall so he could watch the herd but the herd couldn't get to him (portable electric fencing), otherwise fed in open door stall so he was protected from weather. Fed was fed in a tub on the ground to increase saliva. Outside stall: nail up plywood to provide windbreak , she'll go in and stand where she's most comfortable. Turn out w/herd is risky as younger horses will drive older horses away. Talk with horse rescue and see what they feed. Wishing you both the best .

    you are so tuned into them, it's beautiful. Back in my teen years the woman who ran the barn where I kept my horse was really tense and harsh with the horses. My quarter horse Pach (Apache) was really sweet. I used to take a nap with him on rainy days when I just had to be at the barn. He liked to nuzzle my face. One day she slapped him away from me... I didnt even know she was behind me! I was horrified. She yelled at me all the time for being to cozy with the horses. Years later I understand, I was just as sensitive as those horses, and there were too many people like her in my life. So, yay you. I hugs you all. I hope Ms. K is doing well today.

    I have saved allot of elders 30 years plus horses. I had one who would choke herself.When fed in a fed tub or bucket.So that being said I learned what was best to keep her safe.A long flat feed dish that the feed is all flat out.So they can not get any big bites in.Also the best thing I personally have found.Is a pre vent feeder .It really does work good and takes a horse a while to eat all their food.My horse would also not eat soak feed.I feel for you what you are going through.Horses sure do become such a big part of our hearts and family.
