What a wonderful Cultural Day we had at Alpha Omega Education!
Our Alpha Kids students learned all about the customs and practices of the Lunar New Year celebrations and even got to experience it through our fun cultural games and activities.
On our special day, we did calligraphy and learned how to write the word 春 (pronounced chūn) which means Spring in Chinese Mandarin. We also finger painted beautiful pink blossom trees!
We read multiple stories together; stories about Lunar New Year and a Chinese folk story about a monster called “Nian” (which means year). This monster, which we know from the famous lion dance or dragon dance, would visit a village on a full moon. The villagers wore red, lit up firecrackers and played loud gongs to scare the monster away! After our stories, we re-enacted the scenes from the story and pretended to be the villagers who chased the Nian monster away! We took turns pretending to be the Nian and the other children would hit their gongs to scare the monster away. We had a lot of fun!
It was a wonderful cultural day for all our children!
