- For many transgender people, UA-cam has become a platform to build a strong community. However, many trans UA-camrs face discrimination in the from of algorithmic demonetization and creator harassment. To find out more, Bela visits creator and transgender advocate Ash Hardell.

@@Calebr34 Evidence? UA-cam's alleged discrimination seems fairly, er, indiscriminate. These kids are on the receiving end. Steven Crowder is on the receiving end. Phil de Franco is on the receiving end. Pretty much everyone is on the receiving end. It'd be interesting to see if anyone's collecting actual evidence (not cherry-picked, confirmation biased, I'm-the-real-victim-here, anecdotal non-evidence). Which is where I kind of hoped this video would eventually land. It didn't.
You mentioned in this comment that this is not exclusive just to the LGBTQ community, but I don't recall you saying it anywhere in this video. In fact, gun channels were the first to face these types of issues years and years ago. Conservative channels were also targeted more so than UA-cam channels that were left leaning. Lately, it has been the entirety of UA-cam who is been experiencing this issue. I'm still not understanding how the LGBTQ community has been harmed by the UA-cam algorithm more than gun channels, conservative channels, or any UA-cam channel that faces these problems.
I simply think you made the video too LGBTQ focused when it is an issue that affects the whole community, what puzzles me is why UA-cam is going down the path it is, if it is to be friendly to advertisers just make it so advertisers can exclude channels that they specifically don't like and to not restrict revenue at all. The only type of filtering that should take place on the platform should be to get rid of illicit and illegal content

Eh, this video wasn't bad, but it just scratched the surface of the deeper mechanism at play here. Which is that nobody knows how to sort through data at such vast scales like YT has to, especially if things like context come into play. The focus should be on forcing UA-cam to create more robust systems for human correction when the algorithm fails, not on blaming the algorithm for failing to understand complex context-dependent issues such as sexuality.
When transgender people talk about life-changing surgery or anything involving hormonal "treatment" because they are the "wrong" sex, then yes, that deserves to be demonetized. It should not be promoted to the youth. The youth are very persuadable and what they see as popular, they will want to do, just for the reason of it being a talking point. That is not what the youth should be seeing, not hyper-popular videos about how it's wrong to be straight, wrong to be cis, etc. Or even on the less extreme end, they should not see people getting praised for switching their sex, because at the end of the day, that is what they see. People, getting praised, being put on a pedestal, for the simple, yet life-changing act, of something like surgery or hormonal "treatment".

Vice started out a good thing. Till it was infiltrated by extreme Whack-A-Moles. Beme is following the same trail.
1. Their content is very mature. These kind of topics shouldn’t be something kids come across, these conversations need to be done in person. It is not a censorship because of disagreement on content, but rather a restricting of nature content like all others they deem so. It’s not your decision to say if it’s mature or not.
2. The whole comment on Carlos Maza is very short sited, do a bit of research and see how so extremely out of context the whole premise was based on. Including that reduces the credibility of your argument here.
3. Plain and simple this is victim culture and looking any which way to find someone to blame, to attract sympathy and build an image of oppression against themselves. In reality most all creators on UA-cam are hurting because of the extremely complex situation UA-cam is in. It’s easy to blame them but they have so much more on their plate in regards to all this than you can even comprehend.
I’ll end by saying this, please do not adopt the form of “journalism” that channels like Vox employ. I’m not saying that topics you report on aren’t valid, but the manner in which you do so, the position you take, and the very obvious agenda you play to will hurt any form of meaningful discussion in the future. Keep it fair, look at both sides, and examine your agendas/biases. Unless of course that is your purpose, in which case please take the time and disclose it so we don’t have to read between the lines. You’ve been doing great work over there at Beme team, I’ve been here since the beginning, but please re-examine what it is that you’re doing and the direction you’re heading.

1. Trans kids exist. They deserve to know what's going on and have examples of what they're gonna go through. Kids get sex education when they're 10 if the school is good, so they should be able to handle the subjects if they're handled maturely.
2. What the fuck context does calling a guy a "lisping queer" and saying he can't reserve himself to "just one dick" isn't homophobic harassment. You do your research.
3. They are literally the victims of constant murder and exclusion from families. Right wingers bitching about Steven Crowder's homophobic bullshit getting demonitised is way closer to victim culture than shining a light on genuine life threatening oppression.
As for your comment about their journalism, I don't know how they could be any more neutral on this. You either accept that trans people are legitimate and deserve help, or you don't. This is a story that needs to be covered and attempting to be neutral would just be sugar coating the issue or ignoring the problem.

I'm proud that they are talking about something important that is disproportionately affecting young people and those who identify as trans/non-bionary. These conversations are great to see and they should be supported, not criticized based on looks.
I would say UA-cam can definitely work on the searchability issue, let's say if you search for specific trans terms you'd get notified that results have been restricted and you can unlock those results with a button or procedure.
That aside, perhaps this is more of a supply and demand issue than a discrimination issue? For instance, I can't imagine a stamps collection and reviews channel being recommended or being that popular on UA-cam; it's catering for a super niche demographic. Same goes for trans specific channels.

Ash has a video on their channel about coming out as trans to their mom. It’s really sweet and it might help you get past some of these messy biases you’ve picked up and see them as a real human person just living their best life 🤷🏻♀️

Carlos Maza is an "activist" who called for assault by milkshakes to people who disagree with him. And the videos "attacking" him from Crowder were debunking the videos he put up on Vox. They were not attacking him based on his identity.
And the demonetization is a UA-cam problem, not exclusive to the trans community.

My point is once UA-cam threw the lure of easy money out there it gave them a lot of leverage over the creators that they didn't have before. Instead of UA-cam just being an online platform they became the creators employer The content became more mainstream and less creative because people were creating content in order to get paid and not for the love of it.

honestly interesting video, up until the point where Ash talks about the commentary videos. If the commentary and their audiences causes them insecurities its not anyone's problem but theirs. There should be free speech and different opinions and commentaries are part of that. fedebenavides That’s a fair point, actually. I interpreted what they said more like it gave them insecurities but the representation was more important than their feelings, but who knows. I wish this had been much longer, then maybe they could have gone into more nuance or talked about other groups having similar issues with being demonetized.

Nah this aint telling the other half the story, both right and left are getting demonetized and their videos age restricted. Both parties want to watch the content they like and stray away from the other sides videos. I see that constant complaining from both started this full on BS stuff from youtube. Then suddenly big corporations started giving youtube the ad money and then YT was like "ohh shieet, pour the money and tell us what to do". Literally the best would be go back where anyone could post again without any reprocations (like copyright laws, guideline breakings, etc ).

It's that advertisers that don't want to put their ads on the content. Not UA-cam deciding they won't support you.
It's the same for those demeaning reaction channels, they don't get ads either. But because they label their content as commentary, instead of LGBT+, they don't get instantly flagged.

UA-cam doesn't distinguish between what's good and what's bad. Look at the comments. The bad float, while the good stays down. Look at the videos. Demonetized for no good reason.
I don't get the false equivalence in these comments. Beme didn't make a video about the left or the right. They made a video about UA-cam policy and how it discriminates members of the LGBTQ+ community. Blocking and gating them, sends a statement that their content isn't normative enough to be viewed by the young. It is more than a little messed up when that content is simply their lives and perspectives. A good question to ask would be why UA-cam enacts their policy this way. It is obvious that they are a company and that their goal is to make as much money as possible while appearing as ethical as possible. What interests are served by age restricting gay and trans content?

So they are mad that people who give critic on their videos can still get to upload to a wide audience. But when UA-cam fixes the problem of showing vile and unneeded content that they go after their mature rated content? You can't just set rules for one group of people and not another!
You have to think about this from UA-cam's perspective too. Over 300 hours of video is uploaded to UA-cam every minute, it is extremely difficult to process through all of these. UA-cam has to work under both government pressure and pressure from the community.
This community includes every age, religion, ethnicity, culture, perspective, etc. UA-cam has to find the middle group between billions of people, and that middle ground requires there to be compromises made.

I only subbed to this channel for Lou because of information and facts about is happening in the world. I did not sub to channel for this stuff like this because youtube is already full this stuff about problems that LGBT+ faces and discrimination and youtube policy.
I never understood how or why anyone should care about someone else’s sexuality. Why do these people feel like they have to share such a personal thing about themselves with everyone . Its like me making a video about my 2 inch stub and how some ppl wont have sex with me because of it. Expecting everyone to like you is wrong. Some like spicy food some just don’t and thats there right. Am I wrong? And if so how?
you have to realize youtube is a place to share content and many people who start it really dont expect to get rich off it, its a venting slash coping mechanism that allows people to learn about them selves and others as to give them selves a better understanding about the world and about ur 2 incher remember forplay helps out alot

There was a whole controversy about LGBTQ content being age-restricted (leading to not being shown on search results) and demonetised, right? I can see why this video is warranted if only for documentation. Plus trans acceptance is still very low, so there's a lot of harrassment in comments and such. Calling it 'UA-cam's discrimination problem' feels pretty clickbaity and not entirely true, but it's not something no one cares about

Compared that to Straight white dude like pewdipie, JackSceptic eye, The pauls, Joe Rogan, or steven crowder, Never seen them on trending, maybe once every 4 months max, despite them having equal or even more views than the LGBT creators. UA-cam has helped fuel right-wing extremism. There's no suppression of conservative videos. Political videos from all independent creators got hit after the adpocalypse. Conservatives just throw a bigger hissy fit over it.
Nate Ford I don't think that's supported by the numbers though. This may also be a UA-cam problem in general. All creators are experiencing demonetization, but conservatives specifically are having more videos that left leaning channels be restricted on UA-cam.

Thomas Fish Hmm. Other languages such as Swedish have a non-gender-specific pronouns, and I don’t think they have any issues. The way I look at it, it’s a very small effort on my part just to call someone what they want to be called. Like, whether it’s their race/gender/whatever I’d rather them just say “call me this” and I’ll say “okay” and then we just go along with our lives, you know? It doesn’t have to be a big deal, and most trans people I know don’t get easily offended - they’re generally happy to briefly explain just about anything to you. They’re also generally happy to not bring it up or mention it at all, but since most people see them as “other” and want to mentally place them in a category because that’s what they’re used to and it’s human nature, and most trans people get that. They’re people too with their own views and biases, after all. We’re all just people trying to people IMHO. 🤷🏻♀️

I mostly agree with you that these videos shouldn't be age gated.... but with that VOX "journalist" taking months if not years of videos, failing to mention that a lot of them are being done as a comedy bit, then smashing them all together and expecting youtube to bend to your view of the story, then getting 'outraged when they actually do due diligence for once and decide not to?
