I think Flansburgh has the perfect voice for this song. The melody / power really accentuate the nasally aspect of his voice and it actually makes him sound really angry in a punk sort of way, which definitely adds some emotional depth to the whole thing
Yeah. But a cover of a cover. I love TMBG, but Too Much Joy released a more creative, beautifully powerful, sarcastically American, and far angrier version in 1992. Best of all, the TMJ lyrics tell a story that is actually true. Tim Quirk actually wrote about it someplace. Ill try to find a link. This reply ia long because Too Much Joy deserves your attention and accolades. They rock(ed).
(The Records - Starry Eyes) While you were off in France, we were stranded in the British Isles Left to fall apart amongst your passports and your files We never asked for miracles, but they were our concern Did you really think we'd sit it out and wait for your return? I don't want to argue, I ain't gonna budge Won't you take this number down Before you call up the judge? I don't want to argue, there's nothing to say Get me out of your starry eyes and be on your way While you were on the beach Were you dreaming all about your share? Planning to invest it all to cover wear and tear? We paid for all the phone calls, the money's off the shelf Don't you know that while you're gone away I've got to help myself? I don't want to argue, I ain't gonna budge Won't you take this number down Before you call up the judge? I don't want to argue, there's nothing to say Get me out of your starry eyes and be on your way While you were in the pool We were meeting with the boys upstairs Talking to the money men and carrying out affairs We had no time for cocktails or working up a tan The boys have all been spoken to The writ has hit the fan So I don't want to argue, I ain't gonna budge Won't you take this number down Before you call up the judge? 'Cause I don't want to argue, there's nothing to say Get me out of your starry eyes and be on your way No I don't want to argue, there's nothing to say Just get me out of your starry eyes and be on your way You get me out of your starry eyes and be on your way
Maria S Two Reasons I can think of. 1. They tend to cover songs that have not been over covered and usually have not been heard of, so it doesn't feel like a cover. 2. They take the song and make it their own with their particular style rather than trying to copy the style of the original performance.
One of things I love most about you guys is that you constantly change your game. This is so different yet so you. Your UA-cam channel is now the one I go to for inspiration and motivation when I'm required to toil for hours and hours at the computer. Thank you!
This video is great... something bothered me about it from the beginning, though: how did they get it so that the shadows don't move?!? It looks like hours go by, but they stay in exactly the same place.
Great version of this. The buildup to the end is an orgasm! "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" but better... maybe. The Records 'Starry Eyes' has become (some years ago) _THE_ Power Pop Song. Look for the cover version by _i Valium_
Guy designing this pool: What's your favorite shape?
Guy who owned the hotel: Why?
Guy designing this pool: Thanks, got it.
The pool says "Yo"
Actually the pool says Y; the hot tub says o.
I am so sorry i had to do that
Tell the pool I says hello
Actually, with that scale, it's much more likely that it's "Y."
I'm just glad I wasn't the only one who saw that.
yo, angelo

The wife just said "this is the best TMBG song I've heard for ages".
I didn't have the heart to tell her it was a cover :-(
Same with Istanbul (Not Constantinople)

7 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!!!
Flansburghs voice is so fucking beautiful 😭
Criminally underrated cover
When they do covers, they do them right.
Love! Heel tapping, head bopping, perfect rock from our favorite Brooklyn boys. John, John, Dan, Danny, and Marty, love ya.
I've loved this song for almost 40 years. Great choice!
Me too! John and John probably have too:)
Midlife crisis here- revisiting my misspent youth-heard this song for the 1st time yesterday-Thought-it-was-BRAND-NEW!

This is simply excellent! :) How come TMBG are so good at everything they do, even the cover versions? :)

So upbeat! I love it! Thank you John and John and Dan and Danny and Marty
This is by far the best cover of any song ever in my opinion. :D
John harmonies
Still rocking out to this song.
This is one of my permanent favorites!
Holy carp!
This is unbelievable!
I'm totally floored by this rocking out you're doing!
MOAR PLZ!!!!!
Deuce Loosely Holy carp? :) don't you mean ... holy mackerel?
Chris C. I could say "holy sh!t" but that would be a crappie thing to say. :P
Keep coming back to this one. Love it.
I love this song! I found out about it a couple years ago. Awesome that TMBG covered it.
Totally needs to be on another album.
Oh my gosh WFMU and TMBG? That's an explosive combo! I love it!
Such a fun cover!
aww
RIP John WIcks
YESSSS!
Geesas, I didn´t know you did this brilliant cover. Thanks
Totally dig it. Great job, boys! (And thank you for introducing me to the wonderful world of power pop.)
God this rocks so hard! TMBG's covers are always such absolute bops. The Johns can't go wrong imo

Really like this one! Totally ready for an album!
please don't stop ever
Le Masterpiece! Flansy is the best!!!

+Ken B. Miller Not sure about the shadows although it's likely only 10 minutes or so of tape. However, at 2:40 they play the vid in reverse!
4 years later, you got me looking at the shadows!
(they move a little, towards the camera and a little to the right. It's not much though.)
Not too shabby, boys! See me after school!
Best,
Huw Gower
Go Flansy Go!
Like Beatles on sterioids... but, Giants! ( Good 4 'thrash/twist' dancing! )
Like the Records on steroids.
Great version of this. The buildup to the end is an orgasm! "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da" but better... maybe.

This is great, but....it doesn't really sound like TMBG does it? I was kind of hoping for something off-kilter and left field.
Has anyone notice the quick cuts to a person?
StealthMaster86 It wasn't quick cuts. It was just the staff walking past the camera.
Yo pool
Wow who knew . .
Replay at 0.9 speed
Y.
One of these days UA-cam will get their head out of their ass and fix buffering so I can enjoy this...
I like the TMJ cover better
Thank you for actually pointing out that the TMJ cover exists. They never get credit for their brilliance.
All they need is a decent rhythm section and this would be a good cover. Nice job on the vox and gtrs though.
Kinda surprised by all the praise.
Please....listen to the original.
This kinda sounds like the Monkees.
