I edited this video, and wrote and recorded it's music while working for NASA. I didn't think it existed online anymore so thank you for keeping it alive on UA-cam. Hail Columbia.
Thank YOU for doing this for all of us. You put together a beautiful tribute to the Columbia 7. I remember as a little girl visiting my Grandpa in the Nursing Home the day she first took to the skies. My oldest Nephew & I were in a tag team of running to the Lounge, looking at the TV to see how close Liftoff was & then running back to Grandpa’s room. 😁 There was a Physical Therapy session going on & finally the Therapist asked why we kept popping in & out. When we told her, Bless Her, she instantly looked at everyone, & I can so clearly remember this, said, “This is History. We need to watch this.” She then told us to come on into the Room so we could watch it properly. I was at my Sister’s that horrible morning almost 20 years ago. I knew she was due to come home, so asked her if she minded if I watched it. She didn’t care, so we flipped on CNN. Me being the Geeky Nerd I am, knew Shuttle Protocols & what should happen during a Re Entry. My Sister knew that too. I’ll never forget the desperate pleading look in her eyes when asking me if, when no Radio Contact was happening, if it was the same as Apollo. I knew what she was asking & told her it was. I’d didn’t lie...Exactly...Deep down though, I knew. It was too long. Then that footage of her breaking up over Dallas was shown & I started praying for their souls & Families. 😪 I saw her literally launch the Program & then... I’ll never forget either day. She was a great ship. Hail Columbia!!
Very late to this, but I feel compelled to add my gratitude to you. I remember watching this as an eight-year-old boy (even then I was already an avid space fan!), and feeling empty and yet somehow warm. I’ve just today come back to it after years of racking my brains as to the title of the video, and felt all that emotion roll over me again. You did an amazing job in creating this, and I’m certain each of those seven brave souls would be proud of such a fitting tribute.
I was the executive director of this video and selected most of the video content that was included. Chris and Becky, the producer, put together this video and it is just as meaningful and poignant now as it was when we put it together all those years ago. Hail Columbia!
If you should read this, know that you and your team have our sincerest thanks. What a wonderful tribute to an incredible crew and shuttle. We always learn the most from our failures, and even more so when those failures cost lives, but before we can learn, there must be a moment permitted for reflection. Quiet, simple, peaceful. This piece of artwork is all three.
Rabbi Zvi Konikov: (From his speech during the Kennedy Space Center Memorial) "Ilan Ramon turned to me with a question: 'How does one mark the Sabbath in space with every 90 minutes another sunset, every ten and a half hours is a Sabbath, every 20 days Rash Hashanah?' (laughter) Jerusalem, we have a problem. (laughter) So I had my homework to do. But Ilan taught us a powerful message: No matter how fast we're going, no matter how important our work, we need to pause and think about why we're here on Earth."
Thank you for posting this. I just finished reading the new book about the accident and found out about this video. So thankful to have seen it now, 15 years after that awful day. Hail, Columbia and her valiant crew.
I've found a promotional CD entitled "16 minutes" which is from 2004 and has that one song (03:22) on it. Profits from the disc are purported to go to the Space Shuttle Childrens Trust Fund & the song, which is otherwise uncredited, is "Sponsored by Tripolar Records". There's no cover, just the CD. Anybody have any idea what this is or who did it? Not showing up in any searches (Amazon, Google, here) that I've done.
Best example I ever heard for comparison : Ever drive on the highway w/your windows open & get hit by a bug? That hurts, right? Now imagine that foam going at thousand of miles an hour hitting something. It’s going to do damage. We came damn close to losing Atlantis on the second flight after Challenger due to a serious foam strike. They were lucky it hit where it did, as there was extra material shielding it due to being where the radio antennas were. Believe me, at that speed, anything is sadly possible.

I heard about this video in the book "Bringing Columbia Home".

Challenger was there to meet Columbia
Hail Columbia
I'm surprised that a PIECE OF FOAM can *end the career of seven people and Columbia*
*life , not career...
