Good patience. I could never do this . The planning alone is impressive. I realize how you drew each head to get these expressions. When this is done you will have grown so much . The future creations are there for you. The creativity you have is endless. Impressive
Chris, I really appreciate what you’re doing. You are giving invaluable lessons about painting with one of the most clear and learnable way I’ve seen in a painting Jedi. Your methods are really simple and helpfuI and I’m quite sure you’re making a lot of people’s life easier and more enjoyable with these lessons. I sincerely thank you for your effort and time that you put in to making these videos for the people you don’t actually know or have a connection with.
I agree with your stand on "flesh tones, and there being so much more color. I think that's with anything. It's about breaking away from what our minds assume and opening our eyes to what's actually going on in nature and our reference materials. Great information! Thank you for sharing!
I always painted portratis in black and whites and always used pastel pencils, i have practiced flesh tones using your help Coach. Now i will start my linear mural full of portrairts. It is 9 feet long and 3 feet tall wish me luck. I have done the underdrawing tho. Could u do a video on sfumato cause i never get that.
You were definitely talking to me when addressing blending. Ha ha I have such a strong need to do that and it's a big downfall for me since I'm new at oils because I end up with a mess. I am going to try your method/tip of just adding a different value next to the previous one to get a good transition. Thanks!
Hey Coach-Doing my first portrait. Can you please let me know: What are your main tips for going from patchwork quilt to finished smoother looking portrait? You went over quite a bit of it here. Would you say using the “transition values“ is the most helpful? Any others? “Typically” how many layers are there of thin to thick to done? Thank you!...Paul
I used to work at moca....before you were born...lol. I used to take pics at our openings, and I got a pic of Nic and his Dad. it's a great shot of them...When I meet you in person one day....I'll give it to you. (I know, in my dreams!)
Thanks Chris. Would you mind sharing your thoughts on whether this technique could be applied with acrylics, successfully to some extent at least? From someone that is also self learning and has started with acrylics
Hi Chris, I just found your channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I too love to paint portraits. I've been using Prismacolor Pencils and Acrylic. Now I would like to learn Oil Painting Portraits. My question for right now is, What do you use to draw the original portrait before the painting?
I'm curious your thoughts on copyright or if it worries you or not. There are paintings I want to do but I hesitate because they use a photo reference similar to these Nick Cage photos some of which are sourced from movies. Where is the line for a painter to create prints and profit from copyrighted material? This gives me a lot of anxiety when I'm creating work.
I paint pictures of Barbara Streisand...i mean Nicholas Cage. Lol. (Really though that is halarious and awesome. Super great technically also. They look like photos!)
ive done 10 portraits of trump but not on one canvas....might just try that....he has so many expressions....good info, i m just starting out with oils....its like going from a honda to a ferrari.
Nice, always find myself staring at your many cage's, theyre awesome.
After watching this one i am now more confident to put my landscapes aside and start portraits finally👍 nice one Chris. Thanks
Awesome!
These cages are phenomenal ,so incredibly inspiring and a fun project ! The different expressions are mind blowing

Thank you so much 😀
I was just looking at my empty wall thinking of what to hang up......... Yup, a Nicholas cage oil painting.
Great clear communicator
Thanks!
As a huge Nicholas Cage fan, you couldn't have picked a better subject for expressions. Bravo

Thank you for your videos. Your advice is so helpful. I see a Bruce Willis collage in your future.
So motivating! Thank you!
Best portrait video ever.!
Thanks!
omg your early rough stage is still better than my exhaustive finished product. if you are this good now, i am excited to watch you evolve
I was waiting for a video for this painting !
Hope you enjoyed it!
Working on a portrait. Needed this complete face of the portrait
first, I painted on my scath book and used colored pencils. then on canvas with oil painting, it took me 4 hours!
Great idea!👍👌
very nice job! (that thing looks huge, so good on ya for keeping hacking at it.)

Chris, you mentioned creating a print from your work. I suggest that you make a video on making a print from a painting, for selling for example.
"Value does all the work but colour gets all the credit". Damn.
Thank you...all good info!
You mentioned prints. If you haven't already, do you think you could make a video discussing your process for making prints of artwork?
I have actually never made prints before. I'll let you know how it goes
i painted! it was a good challenge!
Great advice
I know your not into the idea of a skin color paint, but I think windsor and newton should have a hue called "clean shaven cage"
Love your teach

I just like to stick around for the ending cause you never know what he’s going to say! LOL!
Do you have special brushes you use at each stage? Can you share this? Thank you!
Where do you find your royalty free reference photographs?

Do you ever wait for the paint to dry or do you keep layering while it’s wet?
Most of my my portraits I work wet into wet
Who these men are?
Leider viel zu schnell gesprochen....ich hab nur die Möglichkeit über Untertitel zu lesen!
This is not as easy as I thought, my head is literally spinning
Has anyone told you that you look like a younger Nicolas Cage?
No ahaha
