    We have a mocking bird in our yard (perhaps more than one) who has mastered the melody of our LG dryer. We have a big family, lots of laundry, many opportunities for the birds to hear it through an open window. Really threw me off for awhile. Imagine hearing that only to find an empty, cold dryer.

    I'm in southeastern Pennsylvania, and I don't see Black Capped Chickadees or Mockingbirds around here anymore (saw them all the time as a kid in the 80's and 90's.) Now we have Catbirds and Carolina Chickadees. We also see a LOT more Eastern Bluebirds here (yay!) than I ever remember seeing as a kid. I love using sound recording apps to help me identify the visiting birds I hear in the summer. I think I've gotten up to nearly 50 different birds that I've heard in my own heavily wooded backyard now!
    Thank you so very much for these videos. I'm learning so much from you all! ⭐

    Great job on the most common backyard birds. That Carolina Wren can make a variety of songs. One even sounded like a Northern Mockingbird but didn't repeat his song 3 times. Love your videos and the wonderful birds😊

    QUESTION: if a mocking bird was raised with a single type bird (lets say blue jay) would the mocking bird sing ONLY the blue jay's song?? - keeping in mind the mocking bird hears ONLY the blue jay from egg to adult or would the mocking bird also mimic birds he has never heard? - and that goes for other birds also - do birds LEARN their song from the parents or is it "built-in" - I know that bird vocal cords can be different so one bird singing another birds song will not sound EXCATLY the same - kinda like when a parrot learns to talk he does sound like a human but his voice still has that parrot "twang" - if a chickadee from the egg to adult never heard another chickadee what would his song be??

    • @absorbed-in-nature
      @absorbed-in-nature 9 місяців тому +3

      @jmarylastone mockingbirds are in a large group of birds called songbirds. They learn their songs mostly in their first few months of life.
      Some songbirds only have one song, but many have several to scores of songs of their neighbors they learn.
      Birds that aren’t songbirds have only one song that is innate. Thus all owls, pigeons, woodpeckers, loons, etc. have only one call.
      If interested, I highly recommend The Singing Life of Birds by Donald Kroodsma.

      @@absorbed-in-naturethats cool. Anyways so if a mockingbird was raised with just bluejays would they only make that call.

    • @greggillson388
      @greggillson388 2 місяці тому

      @@xcyberry I didn’t make it clear, but mockingbirds, starlings, and some other mimics continue to learn new “songs” their entire life and add to their repertoire.

    I've got a pair of cardinals at my feeder, a male and a female. They each take turns eating while the other acts as a lookout. They signal to each other back and forth pretty regularly with these loud and sharp single chirps. Very cool to watch them until the blue jays show up and kick everyone out.
