The Dock shunter was designed by John Hefford, who designed all Triang locos including the clockwork top tank mechanism and the Triang power bogies. He also designed the original Rovex plunger Princess locomotive for Rovex in 1949. He came to Triang when Rovex asked to be absorbed by Triang in 1951. Hefford also designed the Series 1 (Rovex Track), Series 2 (Standard Track), Series 3 and Super 4 track. Pretty much everything Triang Railways was designed by John Hefford.
The original 1957 Dock Shunter has a different body (I own one) it was only made until 1958 when the Mark.3. coupling were introduced. The 1957 version has Mark.2. coupling and has a space between the driver's cab ladder and rear buffer plate. On the 1958 to 1980's versions this is filled by a riveted plate for strength. I'm surprised that you don't have one in your collection as the original 1957 Dock Shunter is very different and rare due to the very short production run.
The version with the extended buffer shanks is a 1980's produced item. That's how to spot them.
The buffer holes were made by inserting a pins into the moulding tool. Removing them omitted the buffer holes. Sometime somebody forgot to remove them.
The 1957 catalogue picture shows the Dock Shunter with the number 57. This was shortened to 5 to save money in the actual production model as heat printing 57 would use up twice the amount of paint. It could only be purchased as a separate loco and did not appear in sets until years later.

Hi John like your video of the shunters, again maybe Network South East would be good one. Or just a thought how about a private loco such as British Steel as you can and may have some British Steel wagons for it too pull
    All the best Albert

It would be interesting to see it in LNER, with the white/black/white trim, apple green and Gil Sans lettering!

Sorry John, forgot my idea. NCB - National Coal Board BUT by fitting the buffers with fitted shank put/stick/solder a solid drawing pin head to the shank - looks FAB with large buffer heads. (You could, of course, go to the 4mm parts suppliers- such as 247 developments -and buy some ready turned OLEO buffers, large head. Would look great. Cheers.

That method of fitting buffers is currently used by Hornby - I have got two locos where thr buffer housing has disintegrated. It is a pity modern Hornby don't insert solid turned buffer snd housing into a hole the way Tri-ang did!

Lots of options, as you have already thought.
You could go for pretty (I like the NSE early livery)
You could go fictitious (S&DJR has been mentioned, so second vote for that, with nice gold lining)
You could go for realistic (weathered, and a non-black NCB scheme)
or fanciful (Regal crimson, so you can use it for marshalling the royal train).
Or use a bit of research, and find a similar loco in preservation, and model this on that (eg the Sentinel MSC in royal blue and red buffers)
Whatever, I'm sure you'll have fun choosing. And who's to say you don't start a sequence of these, so you can have more than one?
    Regards, Tom
