  • A multi-million dollar project meant to digitise files of East Germany's secret police, has been abandoned.
Millions of documents amassed by the Stasi were shredded soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Historians are restoring some of them by putting millions of bits of torn papers together.
But the scanning hardware being used to digitise the old documents is not sophisticated enough.
Al Jazeera's David Chater reports from Eastern Berlin, Germany.

That technology is over a decade old. They don't want the files seen.

They are not abandoning digitalizing, they are digitalizing the whole files. The files that were shredded by the Stasi before people could stop them were bagged for later. They haven't even finished the intact files yet, there are so many!

The Fraunhofer Institute made big promises, received funding, and then just quietly walked away.

Thanks Al-Jazeera. I've just watched your Witness episode from August2018 and popped over to say you at least know how to represent Germany.

There is one element here that I do not understand: The absence of personal and physical revenge by those who were spied/informed/snitched upon. Perhaps I am looking across the cultural divide of German vs. the US, but I am confident that if it had been Americans who were the subject of reporting that disrupted their marriages, occupations, and educational possibilities some would have extracted pay-back in the form of .45 caliber or 9-millimeter cartridges. I am not aware that anyone has been physically attacked by someone on whom they were reporting on in the former East Germany. In the words of Sherlock Holmes, "Why is this dog not barking?"
Any psychological or sociological insights out there?

the snitches kept quiet, while the documents would have to have been gone through with a fine-tooth comb. How would anyone know they were snitched upon in that scenario?

After the fall of the Wall anyone can use the German Freedom of Information Act to get a copy of their Stasi file. You can't get those of other people, just your own file. From that you can figure out who was reporting. When I went to pay the Euro 10.00 for the photocopying of my file I was asked, "Do you want to speak to your case worker (Facharbeiter) who pulled the file together? I said yes, and asked about some areras that semed to be missing. I was told that people would still open a storage room in a building and find boxes of files, which would then be incorporated into the system. He suggested the every year or so I ask about an update. Some updates came with legalese a the bottom that said "Just because it is in the Stasi filles does not mean that it is true, just that it is in the file."

This is the subject of BrasscheckTV's 14-minute video for 9/1/18. They call it "What a surveillance state leads to", title showing in the footage "Virtuelle Rekonstruktion zerissener Stasi-Unterlagen". I'm astounded this is taking place, especially in Germany, because communism vanished from public consciousness after the fall of the Berlin Wall. It murdered at least 100,000,000 people but is virtually never mentioned anymore anywhere. Cui bono? The communist establishment running everything today, of course. The hollowcaust lie was hatched to camouflage this global crime spree and has done an extraordinary job of it.
