This is a weird question I'm sure. Is it possible to put a 30" downdraft vent with a 36" cooktop? We are replacing our countertops. I have an island with my cooktop on it. I have a nearly new 30" downdraft vent but want to upgrade to a 36" stove. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!
@annsmith2701, you should be able to install your 30" downdraft, but it might look a little unappealing not extending the entire width of the cooktop. Your counter will also have to be cut to accommodate the cooktop, as well as a separate cut for the shorter downdraft. If I were you, I would purchase and install a downdraft that matches the width of the new cooktop. You can sell or donate the existing downdraft so it's not a complete loss. I wish you the best with your project!
Thanks for the video! We have all brand new granite being installed tomorrow. We have a new GE 36" Profile being installed, and the downdraft vent system. I have a question hopefully you can answer. Did you remove your cooktop to remove the old downdraft and install the new one? In other words, does the hole for your stove give enough room? I'm asking because I need to know if the downdraft has to at least be placed into the cabinet before they put the counter on. Also, if the granite installer is cutting the 34 1/2" opening for the cooktop, and extending it by 2 1/8" for the downdraft telescope, I believe that leaves room for the telescope to lay on the counter. At least from your picture, that seems to be what it does. Again, Thank you!
My cooktop did not have to be completely removed, but I did have to lift its front to create space to remove and install the downdraft in the counter top. Once the downdraft was secured, I simply lowered the cooktop back in place and caulked around its perimeter. The downdraft will cover the edges of the counter top. Its edges does rest on top of the counter. They should be careful not to cut the hole too wide. I wish you success with your project!
Hi there, thanks for taking the time to make this video and share your experience! Seems like we had the same scenario, having to replace a discontinued GE unit with the exact one you have. How do you install the mesh filters? It appears they don’t fit flush with the opening of the vent? Are they suppose to go in at an angle below the rectangular opening of the vent? It appears the pic from the manufactures manual looks like it is flush with the front which creates confusion. I appreciate your help!!!
The mesh filter has to be installed in an angle with the top of the filter tilted towards the front of the exhaust opening while its bottom is positioned towards the rear. The filter should also be installed with its tab in the up position. Good luck!!
Do you know how to remove the filter on this model? It has a warning sign to clean it often. We are getting a weird smell when we cook and I want to try cleaning the stove and the downdraft filter to see if it will help
@@funstuffonthenet5573, It is great that you found the answer. In addition to cleaning the filters regularly, you are also encouraged to periodically clean any grease build-up at the bottom of the exhaust chamber. Grease will eventually leak out the bottom of the chamber if not cleaned.
@@DIYFixer331 Oh interesting. I'll have to figure out how to access that. I assume each installation is a bit different. Mine looks like it is connected to the exhaust with a reflective duct tape like thing. So maybe I would need to take that all off to clean it?
You should review the specs for the size of the unit. I can recall how much space is needed at the rear but not much is required. I have since sold the home, so I am not able to measure.
The island was setup to accommodate a specific size. It would have been a pain to install a unit with a different size and design. I decided to take the oath of least resistance. The replacement fan was much more powerful than the original.
Naomi Wallace, I highly recommend the universal downdraft offered by GE unless you can locate an exact replacement. The universal unit is extremely well built and has an excellent exhaust fan.
These close up vent draft are not good for flame like that as it take all the heat away making cooking slower. Gas cook or flame best to have overhead draft. Downdraft or backdraft are Best for electric or induction as it take only smell away

Can you help me to install?
Is it really that noisy? Up and down and fan?

I found the answer. Just reach down into the air intake for the system and you should be able to just pull them out easily with your hands

Thx trying to figure out how to do one of these but behind a oven/cooktop...
AINT gonna happen. not if you have gas line under it, as shown, but the fan motor will be in the way too and possibly the elec outlets (shown)
How big of a gap do you need in the granite behind the range? I currently have a 1.75" space. Thanks!

May I ask why you chose the same one and not a better model? Would it not fit in the space?
Thank you
