What about the fact that the nazi's were digging in the wrong place because they only have one side of the talisman. Also, what about the fact that without Indiana showing up to the bar the Nazi's would have likely gotten the real talismen from Marrion.
So to the first part, the film takes place in ‘36. They were digging before they had the headpiece and it’s safe to assume they would have found it before the war ended. And to the second part, that only shows how important indi is. They would have gotten it sooner if he hadn’t interfere
No no no no. Remember how they show us the creepy Nazi in black eyeballing Indy on the plane? The Nazis were using him to lead them to Marion. That suggests that they didn't know how to find her themselves. That in turn suggests that if Indy had for some reason declined to get involved, then Marion would still have the headpiece in Nepal, the Nazis would still be digging in random places, and there's the very real possibility that the Ark would never have left its resting place in the Well of the Souls.
Yeah but even if Indy wasn’t there the Nazis would’ve still found Marion killed her, taken the medallion and read both sides and dug in the right place
Star Wars Explained also debunked the theory about how Indiana Jones doesn't affect the plot of Raiders of the Lost Ark. Not only that, but the entire point of the Indiana Jones franchise is about the adventures Indy goes on. It's not about finding the Ark of the Covenant, the Sankara Stones, the Holy Grail, or the Crystal Skull. It's the fact that Indy gains something greater out of his adventures. I think The Last Crusade is my favorite in that regard (about how Indy gains something greater out of his adventures), since Indy mends his strained relationship with his father. They are able to find common ground through their common goal of seeking the Holy Grail, but it's fascinating how Henry Sr. (the one who was looking for the Grail his whole life) is the one to tell Indy to let the Grail go, showing that he cares more for his son than the Grail. Overall, even if by some off chance, Indy wouldn't have affected the plot of Raiders of the Lost Ark, you shouldn't let that detract from an awesome movie. The action is stellar, the score is top notch thanks to John Williams, and all of the characters (not just Indy, but also Marion, Sallah, and Belloq) have charming personalities.
The Nazis were searching for Abher Ravenwood, and the wouldn’t have found the Staff of Ra headpiece without tailing Indy to Nepal; consequently, the Nazis would have never found the Ark without Indy! Ha!!! Relevance! Take that Big Bang Theory!
Someone once pointed out that the entire Indiana Jones saga makes a lot more sense if it's viewed chronologically from Indy's point of view. From being a smart-ass teenager stealing the Cross of Coranado to succeeding through faith to save his father. It's a story of growth and maturity.
See I always thought that without Indi, after the Nazis opened the arc it would eventually wind up in the hands of religious zealots resulting in near mass extinction of all human life.
And would the Nazis have ever found the Ark without Jones? Maybe by digging in every last place, but by then the war could have easily been over and cooler heads would manage the discovery. And Jones could have RPG'd the Ark but chose not to. Without him there's simply no story; he's the main driver.
Since the movie takes place in 1936, I don’t think it’s too far fetched to believe they would find it well before the war was over. Yes, Jones could have, but it would have been so out of character. It’s one of the greatest discoveries of human history, he would have done anything to preserve it. It wasn’t just about getting it out of the hands of the nazis
if it wern't for Indiana they would have purchased,(tortured her for) the staff head from Marium Rose wood and had both sides and knew exactly where to dig. Blailok is an anthropologist too. So, If Indy hadn't showed up when he did the Nazis would have had both sides of the staff head and gone directly to where they should dig instead of having Indy to show them where the Ark was. Either way same outcome, Nazi's recover the Ark... maybe a little earlier.
If Indiana Jones on the airport would have allowed the Ark to be taken to Germany, Bailok would have taken the Ark to Germany, and opened the Ark in front of Hitler and his Ranking officials that is why Hitler had them looking for the Ark in the first place. The Ark being opened would have killed everyone present just as it did in the desert. WWII would have ended when Germany lost its Nazi leadership. So, his actions lead to Hitler being spared and kept WWII going, causing hundreds and thousands of deaths, really heroic. I've heard that someone said the movie isn't about the Lost Ark, the Sankara Stones, The Holy Grail, the Crystal Skull, if this were true and the movies were about the adventures of Indiana Jones. Well then why aren't they named The Adventures of Indiana Jones, and The Further Adventures of Indiana Jones. It is literally in the title, in the story each is "Chekov's Gun" Each is the other star of the movie. He has to go to the Temple of Doom. It's kind of like listening to any other cult leader. You believe because your leader said, believe, not because what he said to believe makes any sense.
Even if Hitler had died, who says that would’ve stopped the Nazis from studying the Ark with caution and finding a way to harness its power and take over the world? Indy preventing that is pretty heroic. Not to mention, it’s not fair to blame Indy for not having the foresight to predict that Hitler would start a war, a move which took the world by surprise.

Well one, Indy knew where Marian was, and thus the headpiece needed to locate the well of souls. The Nazis didn’t know where she was, they followed Indy to her. And yeah, the rest of your other points are also valid.
The thing to remember is that indy is not James bond.he s not sent on a mission.he s more in the vein of john mclain in die hard, where he s more incidental to the story, and has to use his wits and intelligence to survive. That makes him very important to the story as a reluctant hero as apposed to a gung ho protagonist as most actors in this modern genre are most likely to be
Thank you for bringing up the flying wing, that is an excellent point. The two reasons I already knew was that 1. Without Indy they get the real piece and probably destroy Marion in the process and 2. If Indy isn't on the island the Nazis still get the Ark but because Indy presumably used what little communication equipment it had to reach out to an allied boat they were able to get it to the US.

My 2 cents to this discussion. The plane was not a transport. It was a fighter bomber. Therefore, there is no room for the ark. In my opinion, the ark was just there at the airfield for no obvious reason. Spielberg probably choose that plane for ascetic reasons only. Indy did find the ark, and the nazis took it from him. The rest of the movie is of him trying to get it back. Without indy the ark would not have been found. Without indy trying to get the ark back. it could remain lost after the nazis opened it and melted. The ark would never ended up in the wear house.
The story is about Indiana Jones rediscovering his faith, learning to NOT be the man he was in ToD (If we're keeping to the timeline). ... Not only that, but Indie starts the movie a disbelievers only to discover the myth is real and through faith he, and Marion, survive
The Nepal piece is the biggest one to me. They had no idea where to find Ravenwood, they followed Indy. Also, at the end, because of Indy, the Americans get the Ark. Also, the title is Raiders of the lost Ark, Not, Indiana Jones saves the world. I mean, only in the Temple of doom does the Mcguffin get found and save the village. In Last crusade, they find the Holy grail, and it saves Sean Connery, only because they were looking for it. But the resolution is illumination for Henry SR and reconcilliation for father and son.
