- Learn how individual exhaust components are measured, fit together, and what tools or techniques you’ll need to put together a leak-free custom exhaust system. Summit Racing tech adviser Carl Pritts delivers the goods on inner diameter (I.D.) vs. outer diameter (O.D.) measurements, and some of your clamp and joint options, depending on your particular components. www.summitraci...
It's a miracle, a Summit video that is simple enough subject matter that they actually explain it correctly...
I AM WORKING ON MY EXHAUST AND THIS TIP IS SO VALUABLE . I WISH I HAD KNOWN THIS WHEN I WAS YOUNGER BUT HEY WE ARE NEVER TOO OLD TO LEARN THANKS
CAPS LOCK - FUCK YEAH!!!
"Once you stop learning you start dying."

This explains clearly what other videos expect you to already know
Thank you for watching, Alejandro!
Best damn explanation I've ever had on this subject after 46 years 👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you for watching!
Awesome.
A very well explained video. Congrats! - Saludos!
You are awesome! Thanks for explaining it clearly.
Thank you for watching!
Thanks, that was exactly the information I was after! Cheers Greg
Thank you for the video. I was looking up information on fitting pipes together for another project.
This helped so much! Thanks
Scotty Kilmer wants his intro back
Haha Nice 👍👍👍
👏good one sabritas 😀👏👏✌✌
Rev up your engines!
BAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!
SCOTTY KILMER CAN GO EAT GRASS CLIBBINS
Very helpful information, thanks.
Thank you for watching, Richard!
Thanks man you rock .
it is very good video to learn
My exhaust pipe’s diameter is 2.1. Do I round up to 2.25 or round down to 2?
Thanks mighty nice of you
Lol, I noticed that thief intro sound was RevHeadz Mustang sound 😂
Soo question? If I have my 3inch xpipe coming I should be able to marry it to my 2.5inch cat back exhaust system?
What no slip coupler that you just connect or weld into place? Those work well but aren't listed.
I agree!
Thanks
How do you measure 3 bolt flange? Summit website shows different flange bolt patterns for 2.5"
Here I am, still wondering if those reducers can be used on something like a muffler with ins and outs that are bigger than the pipes you currently have on, and if I'd need two clamps for each one?
Excellent info
Thank you for watching, Peter!
Question, can I connect a 3 inch exhaust pipe to a 2.5 inch collector without losing power or causing loss of backpressure??
You can connect the 3” exhaust, the collector will be point that would be reducing back pressure.
@@SummitRacing Thank you!
How about 1.5" exhaust to a 3" muffler?
Options?
I'm looking for something similar, 2.25" to 2.5" and 2.25" to 3"
I got myself a flowmaster super 10 on the way, and two flowmaster outlaws waiting now, although may have to do this stuff at home instead of a shop as planned, which will be interesting
My wife has a trailblazer and I'm working to cut the catalytic converter off. Google says it's 2.5. What size pipe would fit inside so I can reattach the converter to the pipe if I'm able to clean it. If it doesn't clean I'll try some flex pipe probably
The first thing you said was "most piping is measured on the O.D. dimension"......What? Pipe(used for transporting liquids and gases) is always measured on the I.D (so you can calculate the volume of flow)., Tubing (used for building things)is measured on the O.D. because it would have to be. This is standard knowledge world wide. I guess the exhaust industry has it's own way of doing things but it seems to me that the practice of adhering to accurate terminology and explanation especially while teaching should held as a priority. Thanks for the video.
My bike failed inspection bc in MD the exhaust need to be passed the passenger.what are my options?pls and thank you everyone
High I'm in need of a T304 slip-fit 12 inch long S BEND exhaust pipe
with one end in a 2.5 inch diameter size to slip fit and the other end
measuring 3 inches which will be TIG Welded to a 3 inch catalytic
converter. The S Bend I need is only a inch difference to move the pipe
over by a inch. So it's not much of a S Bend.
Unfortunately, none of the manufacturers that we carry offer anything like that. Sorry we couldnt help!
what size of band clamps do i use for my two butt joints 2.25" pipe
Hey I got a muffler can. Total flow. 3.5 muffler. My vehicle is 2.5. Can a muffler shop fit that in some how? Will it effect anything? Muffler shop said they can't. But I got a sneaky feeling that they just want me to buy one of there mufflers.
So would a 2.25 inlit and outfit glasspack fit over a 2inch exhaust piping???
I wanted to install a Flowmaster outlaw 2.50 muffler but my exhaust is 2.25 how will this effect the exhaust & power output
So if a measure O.D of my oem pipe before muffler it is 49mm and the smaller aftermarket muffler i could find is 51mm or (2inch) as you know...
Will it fit?
No
I should be doing Intro to Microcomputers rn lmao
So if the pipe in my car is 2 1/4 and I buy a 2 1/2 muffler can they be connected?
nice vid
So on my bike will a 50.8mm od link pipe fit with a 51mm id end can?
can tell me what size piping fits over 2 inch pipe..
Hello, It depends on what type of pipe you are referring too, mufflers are measured ID and exhaust pipes are typically measured OD so a 2 inch will slide into one another. That is not always the case but as a general rule of thumb
@@SummitRacing hello sorry i not a professional.
I have a 2.5 pipe and want to get an exhaust tip for it. What size do I need? I don’t want to weld it
Get a 2.
5 inch lap joint and connect pipe to tip
John needs to be deported for his answer lmao
Lol
Why didnt you tell us about flanges? If an exhaust has a 2,5" flange, does that mean the pipe diameter is 2.5"?
is the exhaust pipe size on a clk550 2.5 or 3.0?
tell what is pipe thickness ? and ss grade ?
Sadly you forgot to explain exhaust flanges 2,3 and 4 bolt
they answered me like im dumb.
Hawaii no they answered you pretty respectfully, if you think that’s someone thinking your dumb maybe you are pretty fucking dumb
Call me stupid but I don’t know much about exhausts I’m trying to run long tube headers and a car back exhaust system on my 2008 Dodge Charger r/t but I can’t anything that it the same or is close to the same diameter piping wise. The headers I’m looking at are 1-3/4 inch but I can’t find any exhaust systems that are 1-3/4 inch to go with it if anyone can help plz so your best to explain it or just send links to the header and exhaust I need. Ps I’m looking for the best sound and power gain and by budget is around 1k for the headers and $600 for the exhaust system
Nice
Thanks for watching!
thankyou, Iv been attempting to figure out wat the measurement #s refer to(ID or OD) for like an hour, & have clicked many different avenues & have run into NOTHING BUT PURE STUPIDITY, THANKYOU-AGAIN👋
What will happen if I run two and half inch from the resonator to the end ?
this is the question that i had
I have a 2.25 exhaust and plan on buying a 2.5 inch tip after the muffler delete . Will they be able to make this work ?
Kevin, You can make this work using an exhaust reducer, or a tip with the matching 2.25” inlet size.
@@SummitRacing i also have a 2.25 exhuast and planning to get a custom tips which are 2.5 inlets and by 3.5 outlits, can this work?
Hi. Can you weld a 4 inch exhaust pipe into any back box?
Mike, can you give us a call 1-800-230-3030
So, how do I know if my car only accepts a 3" cat back or only accepts a 2.5" cat back? Will the catalytic converter accept any size cat back attach to it?
As long as it is listed for your specific application, it shouldn’t matter. It’s very common for a 3” exhaust system to neck down to attach to a factory 2.5” converter. If it is stated for a specific size converter, you will have to measure yours.
Does it matter if both sides are the same size
Hi Armiz,
If the I.D. and O.D. are the same sizes on both connections, you can use a Butt-Joint clamp to make the connection.

What how much need i resizing for 1.5cc engine with standard 1.4 OD piping?
Sorry, we are not sure what you are asking. Do you mean 1.5 litre 4 cyl? Are you asking about needed exhaust size?
@@SummitRacing yes sir
Use a coupler on butt joints doy
Summit Racing Can you donate me some performance parts for my 1994 silverado 350 tbi ,i cant afford it.
L O fuckin L bro ! Really they could but will they
he said Butt
welp on my way back to autozone
TACOS talk 😂😭😆
Those tubing expanders are useless!
wtf are you explaining this to children
what if the pip is larger then the muffler pipe, does the muffler have to be insert inside and clamped or does the muffler have to be bigger then the pipe?
It is preferred the parts all be of the same size for the best performance. If you are simply trying to use what you have you can use a reducer to connect the parts but the smaller muffler would reduce the airflow ability of the system.
Whats the size adapter the would fit inside of exhaust pipe in front of catylic convertor on 2001 impala
