"I could be a soldier, go out there and fight to save this land, be a peoples soldier, paramiliatary gun in hand". Fucking Genius, what a brilliant song.
I was at this gig, I can even see myself on the footage. It was at the Electric Ballroom in Camden, about 1979 I think. It was a brilliant night. I remember they did White Riot by the Clash for an encore. Good times.
yes you got that right balls of steel real punk band no bullshit. you need to have been a youth in the 70s to get it... they could have been knee capped or worse. harder lyrics than the pistols. and suspect device. bloody Sunday.... white noise fly the flag. more influence on me than the rest of the punk bands.
That first SLF album totally rocked. Could be the best punk album of all time, and I don't say that lightly. If you like the sound of the first wave of punk rock, you must get that CD. BTW, loved to see the audience "pogo", though it's an example of herd mentality that drove people like Johnny Lydon crazy; the message: think and act for yourself and stop doing everything I do. Like the song says, don't want to be nobody's hero. Thanks for this great vid.
Thanks for sharing! Stiff Little Fingers is one of the greatést bands of all time (with awesome music and awesome lyrics), along with the Clash, Ebba Grön (Swedish punk band) and Dropkick Murphys.
Saw Jake perform an acoustic version of this awesome song accompanied by Pauline Black, JJ Burnel and Steve Diggle (I think?) on the 'Three Men and Black' mini tour of small venues a while back. 25+ years on, grey haired and wearing a cardigan (I shit you not!) Jake snarled and spat his way through the song with the same passion and fury as he did in the glory days of SLF we see here. For an all too brief 3 minutes or so I was nineteen again... truly amazing. Hanx!
I can remember Jake introducing this song back in the day and I couldn't help thinking, well it's just as well the window cleaner wasn't walking past, it wouldn't have had the same feeling. That being said if the good people of Ireland don't know they're being played they're incapable of seeing the big picture.
It's definitely a Yamaha SG range guitar, mid 70's most likely. They've got a very loyal fan base amongst those who know the brilliant quality of Japanese guitars from around that era... Don't get me wrong tho', I love Gibson too!
Looking forward to "The Junction" Cambridge next week, would love it if they played this; "Stuff the Fuckin armies, killing isn't my idea of fun" - fantastic line !
i think this is from a film called shell shock rock, a documentry about irish (maybe just belfast) punk bands from '79 or 1980. i saw a clip on UK tv at the time and then tried to go see it when they had a showing at a local arts centre. i was only 13 and they wouldnt let me in so i didnt see it(boooo). anyone confirm thats what it is?
Had Zimmerman wrote this it would be hailed as genius but because it was punk it was ignored. Fuck dylans accoustic shit, this sound really puts the message across!
Peace with you brother... IRA/UDA fascists murderers scum: nail on the head!! The "conflict" was one of the many reasons I left Ireland. I hope the new generations can live together in peace. Rev Dr O
When punk rock meant more than a hairstyle or fashion. It was from the heart and played with a vengeance.

Its a real scene..normal people in the crowd in BELFAST..they just wanted peace !
i play in a punk covers band playing punk from the late 70's only. this goes down the best (well together with sound of the subhurbs)
Excellent work posting the lyrics which are hard enough to make out even on the studio version. Great live clip, thanks!
saw this lot on this tour, still the best punk band ever.
