It's really helpful for us to update our knowledge on solaris OS , Thanks for done this such amazing work and share with us . I would also request to you, if you have knowledge about the vcs and vxvm, please make the video such like this and share it .
Kiran, I have sent you a test email. As for contacting me for any informal Knowledge Transfer on Solaris or other related technologies, I'd prefer Email communications as I already receive a lot of calls related to my day job, so may not be in a position to have lengthy conversations on topics that are outside of my work
Thank you Md. Haris for watching Solaris videos. I didn't have expertise around IBM AIX, so don't think I can create videos around it. Moreover, I work on Middleware product these days. I hope you'll find some useful videos on AIX in UA-cam. Good luck.
Yes sir...keep up the good work and I liked the style of writing the commands and explain it with details .... let us see further videos about different subjects ....thank you
Arbaz, Thanks for posting the question here. I don't think there is one straight answer to the question you asked. Here are my thoughts. Solaris is a flavour of Unix OS. It was originally based on the BSD flavour of Unix and was named SunOS. Later they adapated the AT & T flavour of Unix and the product was rebranded as Solaris. You see, the OS came into existence during the '80s and possibly attracted a lot of Customers in the '90s and was at its peak in the late '90s. The performance on Solaris on SPARC architecture was reported to be so good that any Industry segment (Banking/Finance/Telecom etc.) who had Scalability & Performance as their priority started using Solaris on SPARC as their infrastructure. These were big Customers who could afford High End Servers from Sun that had Solaris running on it. The landscape changed towards the late '90s and early 2000. World Wide Web had its reach to every household and many Start Up companies started to show up. Linux was also making in roads. It claimed to have the sturdiness of other flavours of Unix and ran on Commodity hardware. It became a natural choice for many startups and medium sized companies. Afterall to run a Web Server or a Mail Server, why would anyone want to spend $$$ on SPARC machines running Solaris. So the Linux/x86 combination took the Industry by storm and OS such as Solaris was confined to only High Profile Customers. Solaris 10 Operating System released in 2004 brought in massive changes to the OS, which was greatly admired by the Industry. They are: - SMF - Solaris Zones (a.k.a Containers) - ZFS - DTrace All of the above features are available on Solaris 11 and much more. A facility such as DTrace lets you deep dive into a performance issue in Solaris and pinpoint the exact cause of it. All of this without having to shutdown the machine , meaning business continuity is maintained while finding the root cause of the issue. So these features continued to put Solaris in the game, but then price was always an issue. When you have cheaper alternatives available in the form on Linux on Commodity machines, which offers by and large the same facilities and performance, then why would people spend their budget on OS like Solaris. But I'm sure there are specfiic segments in the Industry which are inclined towards Solaris because of its history, features, performance, scalability, reliability, servicability etc., whereas a majority of others have already successfully implemented Linux as an alternative OS. Lastly, preference matters. I use Linux. There are rumours of Solaris dying soon. But none of it matters to me, as I continue to love Solaris.
@Bill Thank you Bill. I also worked for Sun Microsystems, teaching its products to Employees, Customers, Partners and Community. Then spent a few years at Oracle after its acquisition of Sun. Glad to know that the videos are useful. Will try to do more of those and publish. Thanks again for your kind words, Bill.
Thanks Rajesh sir.. This is tutorial really helped to me only one question regards with same video, Can we have clone pool like you clone dataset in this videos tutorial?

Hello Ram, Thank you so much for the encouraging comment. So kind of you. I have not created a video on Solaris Volume Manager. With ZFS built into the Solaris 10 SVM kind of became a redundant facility in Solaris.

Hello Mehul - I have not been following the developments around Solaris for a couple of years now. Chances are that they decommissioned the Live Media and therefore it's not available on the Oracle site for download any longer.
I expanded my root disk in vmware now when i see my rpool it shows only 16 gb as initially it was that, however now after increasing the disk how can increase the partition size in solaris on the default rpool?
Hello Shitikantha, firstly thank you for taking time to watch my videos. A lot of what you said are in my "To Do" list. Just that I'm waiting for a relatively free time to do it and upload. Be assured, I'll try to upload as many tutorials as I can.
