Hi guys. I'm the builder of K-9. Thanks again to Dave for inviting me to talk about my tin dog. It was great working with him. The Dallas Makerspace is also very impressive and I met some great people there.
I think your replica may be an improvement over the original. However, this is coming from someone who never watched the classic series, and only a tiny amount of the modern series.
As a girl watching original Doctor Who I built a full size K9 out of cardboard, tin foil and sticky back plastic. It didn't last long but loved it to death.
It's so amazing to see two hobbyists doing what they love. You can see the guests genuine love for his creation, and how proud he is displaying every aspect of his project.
8bitguy as a teenager i love restoring old computering stuff. I am 14 years old and i am the only kid in the school which love retro computers. very good videos
40 years has led up to this, a near-autonomous replica of a _Dr. Who_ robot. I am ashamed to admit that I never watched much of the show, but what a time to be alive.
this is just a wooden toy in comparison with modern robots, at this point they only need a more advanced AI and another way to power them since using conventional batteries is a big limitation.
Doctor Who is kind of one of those shows that you either like or hate it. There is no middle ground. Yet for a series spanning over 50 years and 14 different Doctors. Also having some rather long lasting drawn-out jokes that a lot the younger generations who like the series never realized how old some jokes are. Yet say. If you at least have a small enjoyment of Sci-Fi. I suggest at least watching one or two episodes. Though best go as early as you can. Even if somethings are corny or silly (Like that of the 60s running). Got to stick with it. As they are rather classical in the way they present Sci-Fi and other things.
Actually, the interference in K-9's camera looks like exactly like what I'd expect a Robot's vision to look like. And that servo whine is just perfect!
David's interview style reminds me of Mr. Rogers (and that's not a bad thing). Great video! I'd love to see more interviews with other retro geeks and makers like this!
Wow, that guy is great on camera, and really interested in making other people’s experience of his product that much cooler. Interesting to watch, and my dad a true Tom baker era fan loved this!
here on Dutch TV it was aired around 7 PM and then it got cancelled cause parents complained their kids had nightmares. I was a kid too and was a bit scared too.
Thanks for having that clip of Romana introducing her name. I was looking for that exact clip yesterday. Love the video, I also grew up watching Doctor Who on PBS.
As a teen I had a dog and it had puppies a couple of times. It used to be afraid of vac cleaner, I tried to train dog with it, useless. But one of her puppies was a very brave one, he attacked vac every time I turned it on. So, not all of the animals are afraid of tech devices.
What a pleasure. Fitz, you sir are awesome. I really loved how you got comfortable on video and really set out to inspire. And you did! It was very inspiring and fun. What a fantastic creation you have made. Thank you for sharing it with us and David.
If K9 appeared you always knew it was going to be a good Doctor Who episode, and the same holds true for The 8-Bit Guy! Great episode and a great replica, well done gentlemen!
I always love when you bring guests on the show. Fitz seems like a really great guy and I'm glad you were able to check out this awesome K-9 replica he made.
Hehe.. K-9 is just as old as I am, now I feel old. ;) Anyway, European store is up and running, I'll be happy to take your orders: eox.no/product/planet-x2-c64-box-set/
AndeGott546 Productions That's because David got this last song to use "early, before public release" kinda like with patreon access. I haven't been able to complete the song yet, it lacks a minute or so, plus final mixing. However, I hope to do so next week after returning from a trip I have to do at work these next days. :) The other song is just an old little snippet I made many years ago for background bedding in videos, it was never intended for public use as ot is just that pattern looping for two minutes. :)
My best friend and me were thinking to make a K-9 model back in our teens - never got much further than rough plans so it's nice to see this 40 years later!! Thanks for the memories!
That is really spectacular! A little tweaking and he could probably have that thing act like the one does on the show, but completely autonomously. Super impressed!
K-9 has also appeared twice since the revival of the show: "School Reunion" and "Journey's End"; as well as on the spin-off _The Sarah Jane Adventures_ .
13:24 Wow, is that Soviet DVK-3 computer? They are pretty rare even in Russia. By the way, 8bit guy, are you interested in having some old Soviet computers?
I've never seen Dr. Who, but I think this episode was hilariously good! (Also, the kid at 14:15 had a Zelda shirt on! This episode keeps getting better and better! lol)
Congratulations on finishing Planet X-2! It was so cool meeting you at PRGE and seeing your talk (which is up on UA-cam for anyone who wasn't able to attend). I'm the guy who asked you about designing a modern 8-bit computer.
Wow 😮 The pattern and information he put on those displays op the top really fit perfectly with the aesthetic 👌 I really like that pattern specifically ✌
That was awesome. Have been a big fan of classic Doctor Who since I was 14 or so and appreciate the time and effort that went into making this. Thanks for sharing!
This might be the coolest thing I've ever seen I love that it's such a mix of "probably similar to what they did back in the 70s" and "totally modern computer tech that simplifies the electronic aspect completely"
Not all heroes wear capes and not all kings wear crowns. Thank you so much HobbyView for bringing this beloved character to life and spreading joy to not only DW fans but those who believe dreams can come true. You rock!
Its videos like this that make me really invested in the idea of making my own K9 replica for cosplay and display! I'd say the replica is exactly what I'd call perfect! Every single feature just feels necessary.
Wow! I remember building my half scale Dalek back in 2002 using an old Roomba, a garbage can, and styrofoam balls cut in half. Essentially the same things the prop department used back when Tom Baker was The Doctor. It's blaster consisted of an automatic airsoft gun mounted with it's barrel inside some plastic to hide the wires for the LEDs I used to illuminate the acrylic rings at the end. I really wish I still had it but it was destroyed in a storage unit fire back in 2007. At some point in the near future when I have the time and money I'll build another one. Ironically it will likely cost less than half what the original did considering the advancements in cheap single board computers and pre-mounted microcontrollers in the form of Arduino. I'll be sure to send you a message when/if I get started on it.
Long time Doctor Who fan and viewer here- thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very much appreciated! I've a whole bunch of life sized Daleks. I should probably put a K9 in the mix at some point.
You guys need to do more videos together, this was awesome! Love Doctor Who. Really good job on the replica, now you just need to find one of those robot vacuum machines and steal the drive system and sensors from it, that would be insane! I can't be the only one that thought you guys look alike, so much fun to watch you both, awesome video!
Another amazing video :3 Also, from Wikipedia, because the intro may have implied that K9 only appeared in Doctor Who: "K9 has also been a central character in three of the series television spin-offs: the one-off K-9 and Company (1981), The Sarah Jane Adventures (2007-2011) and K9 (2009-2010). "
ah yes k-9, was a popuar lil dog to start with but got a bit annoying and was only used as a side person, in the 80's the doctors newer side kick serah jane smith got k-9 and a spinn off was made, sadly it failed to get any more popuar, then in 2007 with the new doctor who show came the serah jane files, which had k-9 in them only until the 4th season when luke went to uni and was given k-9,
Oh man, this was awesome! You need to bring more of these interesting friends of yours to make guest appearances in your videos :D Two awesome dudes in one video.
oh that's cool..being from Britain i see Dr Who as a very British show..i am surprised they haven't made an American version for u.s audiences like you do with all our comedy shows!! :s

Aww that's so cool!! I never watched any dr who, but it's still awesome. Actually, my brother is building a full scale R5 droid from Star Wars, and he made the body the same way, with the styrene and glue that melts the plastic together. It's impressive how strong it makes the body
Awesome video as always. Awesome Doggy, love the fact he included the touch sensitive areas for kids to get a reaction from his tail wagging, its very cute.. Also, best wishes and luck with sales on Planet X2 David, I think (from what I've seen of it) you've done a great job... its sure to end up as a classic C64 game to own..
Yes! A new 8-Bit Guy episode!! And great to see that a fan of a show actually did this. I mean, I myself imagine doing something similar, but with a different object from a different, not as popular TV show.
Hi guys. I'm the builder of K-9. Thanks again to Dave for inviting me to talk about my tin dog. It was great working with him. The Dallas Makerspace is also very impressive and I met some great people there.

You’re awesome, being able to build a thing like that!
Your K9 is awesome!
Your K-9 is super neat. Glad we got a chance to see him!
The camera interference is actually perfect for 70s/80s Doctor Who
I was thinking that myself
As a girl watching original Doctor Who I built a full size K9 out of cardboard, tin foil and sticky back plastic. It didn't last long but loved it to death.
Sticky back plastic - now THAT brings back memories!!! I don't think they make it any more - certainly not under the same name!!
Sounds like my first Proton Pack.
The-8-bit guy is an alien squirrel in disguise, confirmed.
XD from 2021land

Need to see that happen!
I’ve never watched Dr. Who, but I still think it’s cool and very impressive!

Bob Mason oh and mentally

Actually, the interference in K-9's camera looks like exactly like what I'd expect a Robot's vision to look like. And that servo whine is just perfect!
This the first guest he’s had that I actually enjoyed. I wouldn’t be opposed to Fitz becoming a reoccurring character.😯👀
I'm quite amazed at the quality of Fitz's K-9. Simply genius.
that camera problem made it look 80s! Nice replica as well!

David's interview style reminds me of Mr. Rogers (and that's not a bad thing). Great video! I'd love to see more interviews with other retro geeks and makers like this!

YES!!! LIFE SIZED K9 HAS THE SCARF!!!
its Tom Baker's scarf huh ?
A piece of it. His scarf had plenty to spare :)
LOL
Scarf was custom made by friend's wife!
HobbyView that is awesome!
Tom Baker was the best Doctor of the classic era
Agree 100%
As a child of the 80's i have a soft spot for Sylvester Mc coy's Doctor and also Paul Mc Gann (said no one ever!)
Best Doctor PERIOD.
here on Dutch TV it was aired around 7 PM and then it got cancelled cause parents complained their kids had nightmares. I was a kid too and was a bit scared too.
My dad quit watching when he regenerated
Fitz you did a great job!! congrats on the K-9!
Thanks for having that clip of Romana introducing her name. I was looking for that exact clip yesterday. Love the video, I also grew up watching Doctor Who on PBS.
In this video: cat torturing. LMAO
I would get one just to torture the herd of cats my wife owns.
i was waiting to see the cat vs the big k9 lol
Pete, Why do I keep seeing you everywhere :P Greetings from Synth Memes :D
As a teen I had a dog and it had puppies a couple of times. It used to be afraid of vac cleaner, I tried to train dog with it, useless. But one of her puppies was a very brave one, he attacked vac every time I turned it on. So, not all of the animals are afraid of tech devices.
@nihonam That sounds unbelievable stupid
Awesome! The K-9 build is impressive and I wish I could see it in person!
Always Loved K9 on the show, and loved how they brought him back in Dr who as well and the sara jane spin-off
Been a Doctor Who fan for most of my life, and I must say this warms my heart so much. Beautiful work.
That was funny when the cat said I hate you :)
What a pleasure. Fitz, you sir are awesome. I really loved how you got comfortable on video and really set out to inspire. And you did! It was very inspiring and fun. What a fantastic creation you have made. Thank you for sharing it with us and David.
Q: K9, is Fitz Walker a ridiculous genius?
A: Affirmative!
Wow that was fantastic took me back to my childhood days. Tom baker was one of the best Dr who's .Well done on making your life size K9.
Two Geniuses and a Dog=Pure Delight! :)
If K9 appeared you always knew it was going to be a good Doctor Who episode, and the same holds true for The 8-Bit Guy! Great episode and a great replica, well done gentlemen!
Goodness me, that's one impressive build most accurate K9 ever!, Take that BBC! ha ha! lol, In all seriousness it's amazing and I'm jealous right now!
ganymedeIV4 I thought the same thing. Lol
"Take that BBC!"
I don't get this. Did they do a horrible version of it or what?
Speaker Sex it's more of a sexual reference....
Speaker Sex BBC = Big Black C****
This guy is a legend. So glad that he was able to come on your show, Dave.
Lol.... love it. Best cat chaser ever.
I always love when you bring guests on the show. Fitz seems like a really great guy and I'm glad you were able to check out this awesome K-9 replica he made.
Hehe.. K-9 is just as old as I am, now I feel old. ;)

Ah. Gotcha. I was more interested in the one at the end of the video. During the credits sequence.
I absolutely love the mini Baker scarf he added. That is awesome!
Tom Baker... the best Dr.Who... IMHO
My best friend and me were thinking to make a K-9 model back in our teens - never got much further than rough plans so it's nice to see this 40 years later!! Thanks for the memories!

Okay, the shot of the cat and K-9 on chairs under the table at 2:10 is a wonderful visual - thanks for that!
Wow 😮 The pattern and information he put on those displays op the top really fit perfectly with the aesthetic 👌 I really like that pattern specifically ✌
I fondly remember K-9 from my early childhood watching Doctor Who on PBS. Great character, great side kick and wish I could have had one of my own.
Good music and cool guest, keep up the good work.
Great video! We’ve got a lovely signed photo of K9 in the shed signed by the voice of K9 himself John Leeson. :)
we need more black 8-bit guy

floof boi we already have lazer weapons.
Tom Baker and the entire BBC would just love, love, LOVE you!
The Robot legit looks so similar to Rick from Power Rangers S.P.D for some reason, I can't explain why.
Most likely they saw K9 and copied it. Really K9 came first. All others are copiers. Though nothing can beat the OG K9
