  • Hello and welcome back to my channel. I'm Beatrice, and today I have a more vlog-style video for you, where I talk about a daily retreat I went on at Edenham Regional House in Lincolnshire. Edenham is a beautiful countryside vicarage, and I got the chance to discuss Jane Austen, 18th century Anglican worship, and the impact of the Book of Common Prayer on Austen's works. I hope you enjoy!

Oh my Beatrice! This is wonderful! Just beautiful and what a wonderful place to retreat and pray! This is even more lovely for me in that my husband and I are exploring joining the Anglican church after being non-denominational Protestants. The painting of what may be Austen parsonage is amazing. I have never seen that before. Thank you for sharing this. Looking forward to more! 💗

I’m RC as well Beatrice, and I’d find it hard to believe our “Dear Jane” could ever be in a state of mortal sin! So interesting about her spiritual life. We should all be so devout whether Anglican or Catholic. Most of us struggle to read the OT and NT even a few times in our lifetimes, instead relying on the liturgy itself to deliver a weekly dose of scripture.
Jane would be scandalized by our sloth no doubt.

Oh absolutely. The regularity with which they would read or listen to scripture is so impressive. She likely had a plethora of passages memorised and at hand to comfort her in any situation. It's so funny when people tell me 'but she doesn't talk about praying in her novels!' because I think we often don't realise how much she would have taken for granted that people prayed all the time. And when someone is doing something religiously unorthodox, like when Mr. Eliot in Persuasion engages in 'Sunday travelling' (meaning likely skipping church as well) it's met with criticism and suspicion.

Fantastic, thanks for sharing! I love it when booktubers share pictures and videos of places I can't go but hope to some day. I'm also interested in learning more about the faith of writers such as Austen, The Brontes, Dickens, etc. Such a fascinating subject!

It sounds like a fulfilling retreat experience! I'd be interested to learn more re: the Anglican view of Communion, in Austen's era, compared to the Eucharist in Roman Catholic teaching and practice, symbol vs Real Presence etc. My impression is that Anglican Communion is an aid in finding grace, as contrasted with RC teaching that the Eucharist is a full partaking of Christ bodily and spiritually.

Yes that's an excellent topic to be discussed. My understanding is that there would have been debate in the Anglican church even then about this, and that even those who believed in the Real Presence would still not have openly acknowledged believing in transubstantation (rather, only in consubstantiation). So, not quite the same view as RC teaching for sure, although overall communion would still have been taken more 'seriously' than by some Anglicans now. The Anglican Church is a real mixture of opinions in our times, but I think it would have been a bit more homogenous back then.

@@beatrixscudelerYes, TS Eliot was outraged, as an (Anglo-Catholic) Anglican, that Emily Hale, a Unitarian, took Communion at an Anglo-Catholic parish in Boston.

You have no idea how grateful I am for your channel. The intro to this video is such a treat. The rest of the video was lovely. You're awesome.
Also, behind you on top of the dresser, is that a Roman breviary with the red pagination?
