I included a lot more science in this one than I was expecting. Hopefully it's interesting (and a little sobering).
Dude, you are the best science-based educational UA-camr there is!
Good on you Kyle :) If you ever show up in Australia it would be a privilege and and an honour to meet you and shake your hand for your contribution to science education, and who knows maybe even slam a MTG game :P

Saving Chornobyl dogs may be a noble idea, but you should really think it over whether the dogs or _the people of Ukraine_ would need more support.

I went to Chernobyl in 2020 and met one of the most well known dogs, "Tarzan" and others, they are the nicest dogs you will ever meet and because of all the tourists they know "SIT" and "PAW" in many languages! Tarzan came with us on our tour and I loved his company, great video, great cause.
Then you’ll be happy to know that Tarzan is safe and living with a family in Dytiaki
Aww lucky you!
@@cleanfuturesfundI will keep supporting you guys every chance I get! I’m so glad Tarzan is safe! He needs his own FB group or YT channel for updates! He is so loved
They are an incredible breed, are they not? If the quartine requirements for Australia were not so strict (we don't have rabies here) I would have signed up for the adoption program while I was there in 2018. I like yourself have never met nicer dogs. The way they line up and patiently wait for their turn at the feed trough peacefully without fights reduced me to tears.
@@cleanfuturesfund That's amazing to hear!
Im so glad you are supporting the dogs of chernobyl! this is very wholesome
You convinced me with those cut puppy pics at the end, £5 is all i can do but i hope it helps
I was only able to donate 2 dollars the last time he uploaded a vid on the topic. Someone with the fundraiser reached out and said it was enough for multiple bags of food. Your 5 £ will go even further, and the pups love you for it!
It may not seem like that much, but if everyone who saw this was as generous as you it’d be extraordinarily impactful. Your contribution matters so much
Anything at all is more than enough!

I can only imagine to joy it must bring Kyle to know that his involvement has caused even the smallest amount of money to go to such a good cause, While a collective effort is required sometimes just shining a light on a issue can help in ways that no one can truly understand the impact. This is a good cause, this deserves attention, and if you can give it is worth every cent.

I think it’s really neat that Science Thor planned so far ahead for these videos that a single trip to the exclusion zone a couple years ago has supplied us with several high-quality documentaries later on. Absolute mastermind of content creation.
Kyle Hill has a remarkable talent for continuing to learn and teach. He never tires of finding new stories from previously used content.
The wrinkliest of brains.
Man, non overbred dogs looks so good, i think every single one of the dogs you showed look beautiful, quite a change from the pugs and Chihuahuas you see in cities
People really need to stop the forced breeding of dogs
Mutts are amazing
1 out of the 2 dogs breeds you have named are not the outcome of over breeding. Chihuahuas are not an overbred monstrosity.
Every dog I've ever had has been a street mutt. Like, who would pay for a dog when there's free ones just wandering around?
I don't think there were too many fancy breeds in Pripyat to begin with, but surely all of the few that were there died off very quickly. Those that were able to adapt continued to breed, with only the strong and healthy pups making it, leaving us with what we have here: perfect dogs.
"Nuclear power gets less scary, the more you learn about it. Climate change gets more scary."
-- Cory Booker, one of the US presidential debates, 2016
Thanks Kyle and team for making nuclear less scary!
Guess which one Corey Booker knows the least about? ... 😅
If only CO2 and other forms of air pollution were treated with as much paranoia as radiation.
Though if the perception around nuclear power and fossil fuels were swapped we'd probably have the exact same kind of issue of rising levels of The Bad Thing causing increasigly more and more problems. Though at this point it'd probably be an improvement if we were to switch to 2 centuries of shoddy nuclear power than it is to stick with our current shoddy fossil fuels for another 2 centuries.
@@StaticRyou know Co2 is needed in the atmosphere right
@@corbis7765 What kind of nonsensical comment even is that? You know water is needed in the human body right? but yet, human bodies don't exactly fare well when submerged in water. Too much of anything is bad, and as it stands, we're significantly elevating levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere with industrial activity, while removing much of the biomass that stores that carbon dioxide through deforestation.
Historically, the Earth's atmosphere has had more than three times the carbon it has now, and at that point most of the Earth was a giant scorching hot swampy fuckin' jungle, as evidenced by fossil records.
@@corbis7765y'know there is a slow CO2 cycle that removes CO2 from the atmosphere and we have been purpusfully messing it up for 2 centuries ?
The avarage person who spews that factoid doesn't know how things work .
This is the first UA-cam charity I've ever donated to. The puppies and science are worth it. Kyle your an inspiration ^_^

That's a pity that here, in Ukraine, we know little about Chernobyl. We certainly need to know more about this tragedy. This is our own land.

I got scared as a youngin, by Three Mile Island. Then Chernobyl. Then Fukushima. I study to lessen fear, it ain't workin... 😢😢 Which one will be next??? ❤❤ Jeannie
@@claireconoveryes it is. Chernobyl is in UKRAINE.
@@jeanwonnacott2718 Those incidents have happened, but fortunately they are rare and have been preventable.
News is only news because it's rare.
I'd love to live near a nuclear power plant, since with the high safety requirements the environment's also cleaner and safer.
Your explanation of the frog's coloration makes them even more fascinating and astonishing than the misinterpretations made them. It's amazing how many science stories are actually made duller by media misinterpreting said stories.
I think the studies have another benefit to society - by seeing how the dogs and cats are doing, it gives another window of knowledge into other disasters such as Fukushima to help understand their issues as well. Knowledge is powerful, and thankfully we have people like Kyle doing his utmost to get that information out there to us all - unlike the modern media (not bashing, simply stating a fact). We saw the misinformation that was done on 3 Mile Island, so these studies and reports help us learn and hopefully better understand the complexities.
I want to highlight a small bit of this video that earns some disproportionate respect from me: that moment when Kyle admits to the small self-serving aspect behind the video. To me, that does nothing to decrease the value of what is being done or the necessity of bringing attention to this cause, but it has a huge impact on my respect for you, Kyle. That self awareness, and openly admitting it, is something that happens far less often on this platform than it should, and it shows a genuineness to your work that reaffirms my faith and trust in you.
The honesty of it is actually most reassuring.
Well said ! ☮
1:35 the dog photobombing in the back is incredibly adorable.
"I know what I'm doing, It's for charity" has got to be one of my top 10 lines on UA-cam, I don't got much, but for the pups I'll throw 5 dollars that way. For the name of science and super cute puppy pics!
It would be interesting to learn about all the cats that have to be in the same position as these dogs.
pet dog industry is bigger, nobody cares about other animals
There isn't really a wild cat population in the woods (they don't survive long out there). But there is a larger prip-cat population in Slavutych
@@kylehill prip-cat sounds almost like Pripyat. If it was intended pun, it was a good one.
We have spayed and neutered over 200 cats since 2017 in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. Most of these are looked after by self settlers and guards. There isn’t really a huge Feral cat population as they don’t survive long in the woods
@@cleanfuturesfund
I must be missing something. I constantly read and hear statements about how feral cats (and pets) are a huge terror to their environment and how unrestricted breeding is overwhelming to their environment. Then y'all say they don't last long in the woods. Is the difference caused by human presence creating a safer environment and increased availability of food, or is it simply the difference between the urban and woods environments?
Thanks Kyle for helping puppers around the world.
A whole society of good boys and girls in need of assistance. Anyone who can help them should.
Your last video inspired my kid to do a whole National History Day project around these dogs and cats. He's so excited to source your work here as part of his research!
I really wish I could have one of those dogs. Like imagine taking one one them somewhere and being able to explain to someone the story behind them.
Yeah you could definitely win the “best rescuer” story at the dog park, if that is what is important to you.
I would guess that due to their constant radiation exposure, this wouldn't be possible. I doubt spending small amounts of time around them has any effect for the people who're working to keep them healthy and cared for, but living with them daily would probably be too dangerous.
@@dayglorange I'm no physicist but I'd be very surprised if the dogs themselves were emitting radiation.
In his last video on the dogs of Chernobyl Kyle did mention that some dogs have actually been adopted from the exclusion zone. But I imagine it probably comes with a fair amount of special conditions not to mention a substantial financial burden/commitment.
@@aquroyadreadmore you are absolutely correct. There were 34 puppies that were adopted. This was a isolated incident and received a one time special circumstances approval from the exclusion zone. It was extremely costly to quarantine these dogs for four months and then send them on to the USA and Canada.
It's interesting that such a large pack of dogs is so friendly. I don't know what that means, but it's interesting.
Unfortunately, not all of them or that friendly. None of them are aggressive. They are just scared of human contact and stay in the back of the pack.
@@cleanfuturesfund I suppose that's just the nature of survival. Animals in the wild aren't naturally friendly. A majority of feral dogs in urban areas are cautious as opposed to aggressive or friendly.
It looks like a lot of the wild dogs have colouration matching that of wolves that might be found in that climate. Some of the dogs straight up look like a docile wolf. Very interesting stuff!
Ugh Kyle, the sad music! I donated (and got a tee shirt!) after your last doggo video, and I will definitely do so again. This is a fascinating opportunity for science, and it's dogs!

This is the exact kind of thing I want to donate to. Sadly I'm at the worst financial position I've been in and can't afford it right now, but I'll be coming back to support this group as soon as I can, this is absolutely something worth supporting.
As a lil bit of a science & history nerd & a massive animal lover, this population of doggos is fascinating to me! I am happy they are still getting help. I'm too broke to donate, but maybe this comment can help spread the word a bit. These pups are adorable! That bit about the frogs was also interesting!
it's not too often we get such a blend of "this is a very important moral thing without even thinking about it, these pups deserve love and care!" and more complex "this is an invaluable scientific asset we can't morally let go to waste." i wish i could donate more than i already have honestly
My dog passed away today and this dedication to cute dogs is the best. These cute fucks gotta deal with our human errors, let's make sure they're healthy and eating well during it ❤
I’m very sorry for the passing of your dog today.

With their endless, selfless love for people, these dogs deserve so much. Every single one of them breaks my heart and at the same time makes my heart swell with joy. Look at how they trot up to greet people, and keep them company on their visits! Kyle, you got me.
European here. I was 5 when the reactor exploded. I remember we were told not to eat any spinach, because that particular vegetable would have absorbed a lot of radiation. I also remember hearing the stories of women choosing abortion over the chance of having malformed babies. There were a lot of scary stories going around about what the radiation would do to you and especially new babies, unborn babies, and even unconceived foetuses. My parents would take me along on a lot of anti-nuclear-weapons protests. We kept a close eye on the weather forecast to see which way the wind would blow any fallout and if it would rain down on us. They were scary times.
Your videos never fail to amaze! thank you for your hard work!

I used to help my parents do most of what needed done, multiple times a week, at the old Chintimini Wildlife Rehabilitation Center location when I was much, much younger. I'm glad that someone is taking care of these amazing dogs.
I can't help but feel extremely inspired by this project and your constant promotion of it. So many things to be learned because of it. Hopefully, it will help to change how humans think about our part in the ecosystem (the part about humans actually being worse for the ecosystem than the radiation), how we should act as stewards for the life on our planet, potentially reducing the fear of nuclear energy, and to cap it all off, science for the sake of knowing. I love your channel, I love those doggos, and I love how this makes me feel.
I used to be a huge science student, the Chernobyl disaster was one of the things that really peaked my interest, with the wildlife in the region, with some of the life having environmental radiation, it’s like a double edge sword version of photosynthesis in my opinion, when I think of this I’m just crazy lol, but when something seeks some type of nurturing or energy, they seek it. The dogs really show us theres hope in the darkest of places. Thank you for this video and sorry for my analogy!
Thanks for what you do, make sure you help all those kitties as well.
Fascinating how these animals survived and are seemingly unaffected by this radiation. Can't wait to hear the official report.
Love your work, your explanations are perfect.

I would of suffered Mental Trauma if I was told (after evacuation) that I would not be allowed to go back and see my dogs/cats/birds etc ever again.
