I use CasaOS on my Pi5 as a docker management and dashboard. The storage stuff and other heavy lifting is done by my Synology NAS'es. 💪

I'm been using OMV for my server needs for years but I avoid using docker because of the complexity.I install directly on Debian. I just tried casaos and love the simplicity of the app installs. I see in the comments that installing casaos on top of OMV works. Thats my next project.

I gave OMV a try but use containers extensively. The way OMV decided to remove Portainer and insist on their own complex UI, was a real put off. That’s the kind of approach I see from pfsense and Freenas, where community preferences are ignored and things are decided regardless.

    • @GustavoBhr

I’m a OMV user for at least a decade and trust me: the compose interface is not complicated. Actually is quite simple to create a new container from a docker composer file after the initial setup has been made. There’s an excellent tutorial in omv-extras wiki. Just follow it and you’re ready to enjoy everything in one interface only. It’s not resource hungry and everything works great and stable.
I was insisted on portainer for a long time. When finally gave up and decided to face the learning curve, my only regret was not doing this early.
CasaOS for me it’s way too basic. However I really enjoy the interface, where omv lacks the most of.

You can still very easily add Docker and Portainer into OMV using an SSH terminal window.
I agree that it was a silly move for OMV developers to remove the WebUI installation.

Don’t even compare it to truenas or pfsense. Their main target is enterprise, they couldn’t care less about community for the most part. Just be thankful they’re free.. for now !

The thing is community preferences are only that, if the Devs aren't getting more support other than 'hearing' preferences then they will follow the route they'd like it to go. It was easier than the many customisations that were unfunded and by the minimal Devs putting up their hand unfounded too.

Unless I'm missing something, sharing folders with casaos makes them public without restrictions. No control over this currently. I don't recommend using this feature. It's a nice front-end for docker containers though.

Hi Josh, in each container, you set what files the container can access. You do that in the compose file.

Don't see how this is a fair comparison, OMV is a NAS that is what its built to do, CasaOS is built for people who want a easy front end for Docker to run containers with a one click install, yes it can share files but its not its primary goal in life. you'd be better off comparing CasaOS to TrueNAS as TrueNAS comes with an appstore built in to run containers.

CasaOS is fine if your fine without any kind drive resiliency and fine only able to use the file transfer via a browser.
It still lacks what a basic NAS can do, for starters there is no SMB (Windows File Sharing) support, sure you can install it via terminal but OMV cam set that up with a few clicks.

Great quality video as usual. As others have said in the comments the 'openness' of the CasaOS and the file system keeps me away from it right now. You touched on it a little around the 10:50 mark. I need the ability to lock down files based on particular users/groups, so OMV is still the recommendation from my perspective - but we all have different needs.
I hadn't heard of CasaOS before this, so thank you for putting this out there! It's great to see comparisons and options presented.

I now have installed casaos on top of OMV on rpi4, rpi3 and a dell laptop. I can tell you that everything works great only concern is to install and setup OMV complete first. Then change :80 to something else temporally install Casaos change its port. Then OMV can be changed back to :80. I have Plex and Web-Calibre running now.

Why choose, when you can use both? I have CasaOS installed on top of OMV. OMV is built on top of Debian so CasaOS installs without issue. All I did was switch OMV to port 8080 first to avoid conflicts and create shares in OMV for the CasaOS/Docker images if required. The two of them together is honestly the best solution for all my home server needs.

depends. if the raid is set up in SW (some omv plugin, or other debian package) you MIGHT run into issues. if it is HW raid, or ZFS you SHOULD be fine. as allways depends on the config, but in general an os upgrade should not affect storage, if the new OS can also read however you set that storage up.

Yeah but... someone who is seeking to build a home server might be put off using OMV after watching. Yes there is a learning curve but OMV is a solid low cost open source solution that shouldn't be overlooked. In my case the updated Compose feature has completely eliminated any need for another 3rd party manager like Portainer, meaning one less thing to go wrong. To me CasaOS is not a real replacement for OMV and is actually more like Portainer or Yacht.
