What Sujaat says is very true. To follow a legendary fathers footsteps in any field brings tremendous pressure on a youngster, who is in the process of exploring his own path. The expectations are so great, that instead of the genetic talent being nourished, it becomes a burden, till the shackles are broken. Sujaat comes across as frank, genuine and accomplished person, both as a human bring and as an artist.
Chaap tilak sab chinli re mo se naina milake... What a personality... As bright as sun... As beautiful as a flower... As simple as river... As supreme as God... Thats all...
What a wonderful and intimate glimpse into one of the finest musicians from our times. Thank you Pandit Arvind Parikh ji for your efforts in bringing these conversations to us. Pranaams to you!
Arvindbhai, this brings back memories of Khan Saheb playing at your residence in Palmyra in late 60s while he was visiting from Simla and we sat around to listen to Vilayat Khansaheb. I have heard Shujaat at Stanford University fw years ago and he definitely is continuing the legacy of Khansaheb. Thank you for hosting this wonderful Baithak series.
He has such a sensitive approach to the raag. Takes much perception. And he reaches a degree of captivating the hearts of the audience, it's amazing, really. Thanks panditji for bringing us the ustad to this precious baithak.
First to Pt. Arvind Parikhji........... Thank you for sharing your "Baithak" with everyone especially person like me ... a classical music lover and living abroad for over 35 years. By listening this episode I felt so wonderful that I can't express in words. It brought me back to India our "Matrubhumi".But at the same time listening to Ustadji I was sad that that respect and appreciation for the Music Legends is lacking. And especially there is no Loyalty. I wish Pt. Arvindji and Ustadji my best wishes and pray to mighty God to give long "Ayush" to you both. And as far as Sitar Music....... "Wah Ustadji Maza agaya". Namaste from USA/Canada.
jitni sundar baatein, utni hi sundar andaaz sitar ka.... pranaams to ustadji and all the representatives of the arrangement..... especially Pt Arvind Parikh Ji
If you want to see the kind of perfection needed for Indian classical music, just watch the hands of the two tabla players when they play together. The two are mirror images of each other - not a single movement here or there.
His solo album naina (not the duet one) and unforgettable sufis are phenomenal I use to listen to them again and again He says he's not a vocalist but for me his voice is way better then other professional singers. And above that his sitar also speaks which adds another point in his favour. Classical singers are always great Same goes with Shafqat Amanat Ali too but he can't play any instruments lol
Thank you Ustaad Shujat Khan Saheb Ji! You are my all time favourite! Also Special Thanks to Pandit Arvind Parekh Ji for giving true musical experience to us! Touching your feet Pandit Ji!...
Thank you for sharing this inspirational experience. Ustad Shujaat Khan has such an amazing personality and delivers the magic of music message with such elegance and simplicity
I must say that Ustad Shujaat Khan is not only a very good singer he is also a very good Sitar player .I have always loved to listen to all what sings and plays.......JASI MAGON
Arvindbhai: We are really grateful for the time & effort you are investing in creating and then sharing these wonderful, instructive and enjoyable Baithaks with so many great artists. I commend and thank you and your team for is doing this and using the latest tools of technology to accomplish this in a way that makes this great compendium of videos permanently available to anyone, anywhere and at any time.
Absolutely Love Ustad Ji. Deep musical aesthetics coupled with his brutal honesty hits you hard..... and what can I say about his sense of humor :-) ! UstanJi Lucky to have you around in the world ! Arvind Bhai, this was one more of very classy baithaks you hosted and moderated. Many many thanks for sharing !
Instead of being grateful we could keep resenting our greatest good fortunes...! God bless....only a deep understanding of the fact that there are millions of people infinitely less fortunate than us can keep us positive...!
A wonderful experience. His Yaman stands out in its own right and compares very favorably with his fathers long playing record of the 1970s. To me that recording is a gold standard. Thanks Arvindji. Would be nice to know the names of the two tabaljis who accompanied with much distinction.
very nice so far, but convolution came when showing the Ghulam Ali, Jagjit ji and his middle path.... well as he says now the stage is his, if people wants to hear him. He doesn't have to change. And I agree w his thoughts as his right here.
However, You cooperated well and also managed beautifully with many tabla wizards like ustad akram khan, Ustad zakir hussain etc. I respect and listen to you peacefully #LivingLegendUSTADSHUJATKHAN
Many thanks Pandit ji... A divine baithak indeed, with Ustad Shujaat Khan Sahab..! However, may I request that the names of both these brilliant tabalchis be also added in the credits hereof. Many thanks once again... and may the Good Lord bless you and your family with abundant health & happiness always..!
thank you so much sir... these sessions are very informative for the students like me... so much things i learn from these sessions... I am a learner of tabla i heard pandit suresh talwalkar ji's session and tried to learn and actually all of these sessions are very informative and i watched each and every video that you have uploaded... sir there is one request please conduct a session by inviting ustad zakir hussain saheb i am a huge fan of him... and sir how can i be a part of these sessions please tell me... thank you sir.... plzz take my pranaam..
Whenever Shujaat talks of his father, it is with a deep sense of resentment even though he may not overtly express it. Good examples are when he says he doesn't wear clothes with embroidery or jewelry. It's fine not to do that if he doesn't wish on his own, but he gives this impression that he does this because of disdain for a certain person in his life. Another example, when he says he is not getting programs because he is perceived as rich because of who his father was & so the programs go to somebody else. I understand that his father may have forced him into this profession but he ran away from home at a fairly early age. He had the power to pursue something else in the US, where nobody knew him. He didn't, nor like his father or grandfather practiced hard enough to excel. Now he is just yet another sitariya, who is in conversation because of his lineage. He should feel indebted that his name is talked about because of his father. I know a number of equally good musicians who toil in obscurity whose names are not mentioned in any settings.
I think he is very much indebted and he has explained it very beautifully. But he did pointed out that he is ultimately a different person than his father . He has a different personality so it's better not to compare him with his father .
I have been listening to Sujaat khan since many years and has always loved his way of playing . I would go on listening as long as he is there to play . Wish him a good luck . JasiMagon
He has deep respect for him not a disdain. you are also wrong on his not being indebted (legacy). Yes he feels the heavy burden of legacy and admitted it. But have respect for his taking independent path and being so honest about open about everything, which is so rare these days. which makes his TRUE ARTIST
Shujaat forgets that he gets concert only because of his father's name. He wants to get sympathy from people. He used to play much better before. only to cover this he takes 2 tabla players. So that he can just play the composition and rest... people are not a fool.
Shahid parvez and shujat khan are claiming there own style is self decisive idea to show they are also creative like ustad vilayat khan. Just using different taal is not enough to established new style than uvk was playing. Both are playing all patterns played by uvk with same layakari. New style need different treatment to all frame's notes during aalap and taans and some new patterns in jahla that only shujat khan is trying is good.
Clearly being Vilayat Khan's son has burdened him a lot and I appreciate him for his openness in how he dealt with it. But he is a poor sitar player at best. His name and his words have brought him far, not his music. However I empathize with his life, being a son of a famous man is very hard.
All that big talk about originality and raagdari and what the actual f does the guy go on to play? And why does he need two tabla players for a house baithak? As for the host, it is evident that age doesn't necessarily lead to wisdom.
I am die hard fan of shujaat Khan. He is the only artist who combines vocal and sitar in t rue gayaki ang. No one comes close to him. Amazing Talent.

It is sublime.What a mastery!

A v. nice comment by Pundit ji at around 1:40.54
Excellent discussion. Yet I felt that the 'reverb' is too much when Shujaat ji is singing.
Fantastic artist

"poor sitar player at best" Really !!! How ?????
For you to say he is a poor sitar player only reflects your lack of understanding of what a sitar player is.
I'm sorry, but your analysis is in error.
,,,poor sitar ?
All that big talk about originality and raagdari and what the actual f does the guy go on to play? And why does he need two tabla players for a house baithak?
