  • Welcome to my first video I am a rookie to you tube.I am 80 years old and still getting to grips with modern technology. I have always worked using my hands working in the building industry. Now I have retired I like to keep active as I believe it keeps me alive. With time on my hands (excuse the pun) in today's throw away society it gives me pleasure to bring back to life and appreciate the design and quality of these discarded forgotten objects .For example old brass kitchen weighing scales or a old industrial metal lamp ,which both items are much in demand these days, restored or unrestored .
I have watched some fantastic restoration videos that put my first effort to shame, but I am learning and would appreciate your comments so I can learn from my mistakes. I hope you watch my videos and future projects and subscribe to my channel which would make an old man happy thank you.
    FIRST PROJECT
My first project is a vintage blow torch, I bought for a couple of quid. The company that produce the product was established in 1882 by three brothers and after four generations albeit new owners still use the name Sievert
My aim was to get it working again which I did achieve, but it took away all the restoration work losing its shine. I think its a lovely design and is like a piece of art in its self,
To clean it, I do experiment with homemade concoction. This mixture is toothpaste with baking soda and salt. It needed a lot of elbow grease to remove all the 70 years of grime. I could have spent more time buffing and polishing but i am pleased with the finish as it must be as old as me and looking better than me now, shame we cant restore ourselves that would make good viewing , I will have to get the old girl to buff me up.
Thanks a lot for watching, I hope you liked the video!
    Suggestions and comments are welcome.
Leave a like and share to anyone who might be interested!
And be sure to subscribe and ring the bell if you are new here so you don't miss upcoming projects! MANY THANKS BOB.

Hi Bob, The mechanical methods you use. I.e abrasives and power tools can cause a lot of damage to such items. Emery pares (wet and dry) can be used on steel components but I wouldn's use such methods with brass. A gentle acid bath will remove all of the dirt and verdigris from from the brass parts (no steel parts in there though as you will copper plate the brass) - I use a low concentration of citric acid - basically lemon juice - as used in cooking but I heard that vinegar or phosphoric acid works just as well. When I did my silversmithing course we used dilute sulphuric but that's difficult to get hold of these days. The acids I use (citric and phosphoric) are available on eBay. Not only is it kinder to the brass but it takes much less effort and is cleaner.

ive managed to get my blow torch to get more compression but it also has 3 problems the pump has crazy resistance and the check valve only works when screwed in all the way which lets in little air causing resistance it doesnt use regular cork as far as i know also im having leaking issues around the on of valve you got any ideas on how to fix

I like this unit you are polishing up. Cannot believe that this uses white gasoline. My heart starts to beat faster knowing you are holding a bomb in ones hand. The plumber of old must of had balls of steel then. Nice work too. P.S. how many blow torches use gas vs. kerosine ??? Thanks

@@dontthrowit-restoreit3458 It's pretty easy to make your own. Start out with a tube that's somewhere near the size of the pump tube and some kind of rod or dowel. Get the leather wet and put it between the two parts, and press them together. Heat it up to dry, or let it dry naturally, and cut off the excess. Remove the leather and make a hole for the plunger stem. Then attach to the stem. Lubricate with WD40 or some other oil and get it in the tube. Might be hard at first but it'll mold to the right size over time. This worked great for me.

Take it back apart separate the non brass parts and soak the brass in white vinegar or plain clear ammonia it will come out shiny and look like new again. Use the web and research the materials and how to's first make your job easier and cleaner this way you keep the enjoyment in the project maybe lol
