    You are one of the examples because most of technicians installs the equipments on random locations or they just leave on on floor without cleaning it after... Great job buddy!

      Thank you. I always talk with the customer beforehand to understand where they would like the equipment to be placed. And of course always tidy up afterwards because I wouldn't leave my own house with rubbish on the floor from my work - always treat every house as if it were your own :)

    We have had this installed in Sheringham and it is brilliant, nice tidy job there and similar to our install. In my area the fibre is ran overhead from the old Openreach pole and we have the same white splice box on the wall near the entry point for the connection. The engineers were able to place the equipment exactly where we needed it (in the same location as the existing wifi hub so I could connect all my Ethernet runs to it) and speeds are instead of 50 down 9 up on VDSL now 350 symmetrical (additional add on) with 2gbps available if I wanted it (350 more than enough for my needs). Only annoyance is no landline available so have got a package with Vonage allowing us to keep that going via an adapter box from them. Hopefully take up increases before Openreach finish their FTTP build along with Lightspeed (both have been up to stuff locally).

      If everything is installed to spec and all fibre is clean, it is a brilliant service yes. I am glad you are happy with it!
      Since the introduction of PIA (Openreach being forced to open their ducts and poles to other providers), Virgin Media, via NexFibre, have been expanding their footprint massively.
      I have watched your video and funnily enough I remember your prepull as I was in Sheringham that week to help the Upp Fibre guys with a pretty big issue at the time stopping nearly every installation from going ahead as you note in your video, which was caused by XGS PON mismatches. In fact, if I recall correctly, I came back again later to your property with another engineer to mount the white box as the engineer who installed the drop cable from the pole did not have any on his van at the time.
      You are not the first to want a landline on XGS PON, I am not sure when it will become available, nor why it is not a service we offer on XGS PON. But the alternative solution you have described is what I have heard of other customers doing as well.
      Thank you for the nice comment :)

      @I know of someone else in the town who was affected by the PON mismatches, someone else came back on the 10th to check them in this road (was the same external contractors who installed the UPP CBTs originally), then another engineer checked it on the 11th (PON was correct then) and squeezed us in on the 12th. I do remember the box going onto the exterior wall, it was handy the fibre was installed where we needed it as our openreach master socket was by the front door and hooked up to the previous EE hub via a flimsy extension cable running down the hallway to the study. The majority of people we know ring our mobiles nowadays but there are a few who do still use the landline and I would have ditched it if it was my decision but parents had the number for over 25 years.

    Very nice and informative video! However, I want to ask a few questions. I'm curious why the white box does not say Nexfibre but only Virgin Media? Shouldn't it be saying Nexfibre if Nexfibre claim that they are going to be a wholesale network?
    Second, if more ISPs join the network in future, how will they go about installing an ONT? As most ISP routers you cannot connect the fibre cable directly into their router like you do with Virgin Media. I'm wondering how this arrangement will be made. Lastly I see this long fibre cable being tucked inside this white box. Why isn't it cut short and is occupying this large space inside the box?
    Oh and I forgot to mention another important point. If VMO2 is using a Hub 5X router to connect the fibre cable directly, how will we be able to use our own router that doesn't have the option to plug in a fibre cable? Or are we stuck with only their given router until the foreseeable future?

    • @judepl
      @judepl  20 днів тому +1

      Hi, thanks for the nice words!
      With regards to your first question as to why the omnibox says Virgin Media as opposed to Nexfibre, to be completely honest I am not 100% sure. I would say that as Nexfibre are using Virgin Media's Build Engine, they are using Virgin Media equipment/consumables, so it is easier and quicker to keep the consumables like this rather than start changing items to Nexfibre which would entail a procurement process and then have to be deployed - this can take a considerable amount of time and unnecessarily delay the build rate. This is an interesting video with the Nexfibre CEO: ua-cam.com/video/M9FPO4D2erY/v-deo.htmlsi=M8hK3mrSyqvST3V8
      In relation to your second question, if you were to join an ISP which uses the Nexfibre network, an XGSPON ONT would be installed, similar to an Openreach FTTP installation. The fibre connection terminates at the XGSPON ONT which is then connected by ethernet to the providers gateway device. If you were a Virgin Media customer beforehand and had moved to another provider on the Nexfibre network, with how we install currently this would need another engineer visit to install an XGSPON ONT, unless they make it so the customer can plug it in and set it up themselves, similar to QuickStart orders.
      The white fibre cable is neatly dressed into the fibre management tray inside the omnibox as we do not cut down fibre cable, as can be seen in the video. This is a 5m fibre cable, we also do a 2m length but this is not long enough as the sheath is not 2m long.
      As for your last question, you can use your own router if you require. You can put the Hub 5X in modem mode and connect your own router via ethernet to the Hub 5X.
      Thanks for watching! :D

      @@judepl Thank you very much for your detailed response! Yes, obviously it is not a big deal that the omnibox only says Virgin Media but it will have cleared confusions over what service one has whether it is served by Nexfibre or only Virgin Media cable. Maybe they might make this change in future, who knows.
      My real concern was that the default Hub 5X from some reviewer on youtube named Off Topic Reviews saying you can't open IPv4 websites as VM only has IPv6 support. And also DMZ wasn't working and would not open any of the ports. I'm not sure about the legitimacy of those complaints. It is good to know that modem mode works and that's what that reviewer said in another one of his videos that he needed to connect his own router for these problems to disappear. But of-course it would be best if one can use the default Hub 5X router and not have to buy another router just to fix these problems.
      There are works in my area by Nexfibre here in Central London MDU building. Several buildings have gone live and I am awaiting mine. We have Community Fibre here but it is nice to see Virgin Media also coming following wayleave agreement. I have never had any experience of using VM. It will also be interesting to see in future if other wholesale ISPs that join Nexfibre whether they'll manufacture routers with fibre optic ports like that of the Hub 5X.

  • @tim7220
    @tim7220 Місяць тому +3

    Does the fibre go directly into the router? If so I prefer openreach setup as the fibre connects to the white box and you RJ45 from that to WAN on the router. Ethernet cables are replaceable by the customer if they break, whereas I guess fibre wouldn't be.

    • @judepl
      @judepl  Місяць тому +2

      Yes you are correct, the fibre goes directly into the router, no separate ONT is used for XGS-PON installations at Virgin Media.

  • @gordonm2821
    @gordonm2821 Місяць тому +2

    The external white CSP boxes VM use are enormous. Openreach latest ones are tiny

    • @judepl
      @judepl  Місяць тому +4

      Yes they are larger than other ISPs. I believe the reason they are larger is that we do not use fibre splicers, so any excess fibre is just coiled up in this omni rather than cut down.

    • @leexgx
      @leexgx Місяць тому

      Usually a coil of thin fibre inside the openreach box (the xg-pon real full fiber is normal size box, the FTTPn boxes are massive as they have a powered FTTP to docsis converter inside the box)

    • @judepl
      @judepl  Місяць тому

      Yes that's right, originally when fibre was released on virgin, we used to have the ONU outside in the omnibox. With installs today, we put the ONU inside. The omniboxes are still the same size but thinner now as the ONU is inside the property instead.
      However on XGS PON areas there is no ONU at all, but the omniboxes are the same.

    This takes me back to when I used to install the coax stuff working for Kelly’s!
    Was a good job when it wasn’t the middle of winter, pulling cables through chambers filled with ice was not fun 😂 nor was digging gardens!
    Do they not issue the cable grommets anymore for the outside walls?

    • @judepl
      @judepl  Місяць тому +2

      All us techs are inhouse now. The cable pulling is still contracted out still though.
      I know where you are coming from, I don't know which is worse, pulling in the middle of winter or in the middle of summer! Had it quite a few times where the garden is frozen solid so you can't even dig!
      We can still order cable grommets for outside walls, but we generally only use those when some of the brick chips off.

    • @techo2k9
      @techo2k9 Місяць тому

      @@judepl Yeah they started pulling all the Residential installers etc back in house when I was an Access Planner working out of Concord in Manchester.
      I enjoyed pulling the cables in Summer, the thing I hated was the gardens and customers who didn't realise you had to slice their lawns etc.
      Looks like you also get given the time you need to do a proper job, when I was doing it we were not given enough time to do it as well as we would like, 40 minutes to do a full triple install with additional box including pulling anything up to 300m of cable was not fun!

    • @judepl
      @judepl  Місяць тому +2

      When I was pulling cables I found a lot of customers did not even realise a cable was needed! I am sure Virgin sends information on the required works when they order, I guess most people do not read it.
      For 1 RGU 1hr, for 2 RGU it is 1hr 10 mins, for 3 RGU it is 1hr 45 mins and for 4 RGU it is 2hrs and 20 mins. For 1 RGU QS it is 45 mins and then more RGU is the same as a manned install. You do still get incorrectly booked WO's and they seem to increase at the end of quarters. Whatever the job I do, I never rush as it usually ends up in making mistakes, cutting corners etc which results in a worse quality job or a repeat. I find myself pushing out often, but as long as the customer is satisfied with my work, I am a happy man :)
      Quite a couple of my colleagues were contractors originally, it does sound like the job has come leaps and bounds, would you believe it there is even something called a comfort break now for which we get 15 mins, although I have never used it!

  • @robputt
    @robputt Місяць тому +2

    Why is the white box on the front of the house with cables everywhere? Surely it would have been neater to run the incoming cable along the brick below the render and then have the outside white splice box on the side of the house with rear entry into the property. Less cable would have been visible then and probably look neater.

    • @judepl
      @judepl  Місяць тому +2

      The white box is put on the property by contractors during the prepull which is a pre installation visit to run the fibre to the property in preparation for my visit - the installation. This is done even when the customer is not home, as the customer gives consent when they sign their contract with VM. Thus, the contractors put the white box where they see best fit unless the customer specifies otherwise. Due to this, it is always generally put in this general area on the property. Also, to run the white box to where you say would be more unsightly in my opinion than what you see in the video as this would require subduct which is black with green stripes being pinned to the customers brickwork to get the fibre around the side of the property. This subduct is quite springy, it is designed to be buried as it is armoured or if it is pinned to brickwork, it needs to be pinned in straight lines, and even then it does not look as tidy as an external fibre cable.
      Earlier in the year I was part of a trial called Maverick whereby we completed the prepull and installation on the same day, this did allow us to do what you say though and place the white box over our drillouts, making for a much more tidier installation. However, with the current installation journey for the customer consisting of a separate visit for prepull and installation, the drillouts are 99% of the time not covered by the whitebox.

      @@judepl Sounds messy, when we had Virgin installed here (albeit coax as we aren't in a fibre area yet) we picked up a spool of coax from them a couple weeks before install, pre drilled the entry hole into the property and completed all internal coax runs fished behind the plasterboard, then the engineer just laid the external cable and terminated it all and tested in one visit. The external cable is barely visible as it's in a trench across the garden and then pinned under the decking, it then runs in a conduit under a gravel path and approx. 4cm of cable is visible from the top of the conduit popping out of the gravel and into a grey box they positioned neatly on the side of our house over the pre-drilled hole with rear entry into the property. I am hoping when upgrade time comes that we can do as neat of a job and reuse existing routes. In any case due to some peculiarities of how our Virgin account was setup we have no wayleave agreement with Virgin and hence if they cannot just turn up when they please and complete works without prior discussion.
      I presume the cable TV boxes in fibre areas are streamed over IP and just have a CAT6 cable to them?

    • @judepl
      @judepl  Місяць тому +3

      In an ideal world every installation is like yours. Makes it tidy for you and easy for me!
      Yes the tv boxes in XGS PON areas are called stream boxes which are IPTV. They just connect to the wifi, but you can run an Ethernet to them if wanted but it’s not something virgin would do. If WiFi didn’t reach the area where you wanted the stream box we would install a wifi booster instead of running Ethernet.

    • @judepl
      @judepl  Місяць тому +2

      Hi, no, if you have copper wire (coax) then that means you are in a HFC area. The tech who installed it would not have any option but to install it according to the network build as otherwise it would not work! You cannot install fibre if you live in a HFC area as there will be nothing to connect the fibre to and the same goes for trying to install coax in a fibre area.
      If you would like to test if you are getting the speed that you are paying for, use www.samknows.com/realspeed I use this, as can be seen in my videos, it shows you speed to the router and speed to the device.

    Jude, if you’re going to make UA-cam videos, proper LIGHTING is just as important as the camera itself. Also wearing a “head” mounted camera is often great for outdoor shots, however, for an indoor video such as this, a camera mounted on a tripod pointed on just the work area would eliminate all the jerky camera movement. Unfortunately, I had to give this one a 👎👎
