- This is how I made my version of a bicycle camper, and also the 85 mile camping trip I went on with my dad. I had a lot of fun making this over the summer.

Matthew! I'm proud of you man! I love it when people like you see something I make and do there own version, no plans needed. Wouldn't you say half the fun is figuring out the puzzle? That's what I think anyway. Failure is always part of it but that's how we learn to persevere. 85 miles in one day? WOW! Now you need to buy some Krylon Fusion spray paint and go wild on the body. Nice job Matthew
Paul Ellkins
Thanks! This makes it less impressive, but I actually did it in 2 days, because we rode so slowly. Figuring out how to build it, and fixing all of the problems I had definitely was a lot of fun.
Paul Elkins
can over lap coroplast and use rivets and use washers thu rivets
Paul Elkins You should make another one and show us how to install electricity and solar panels, so I can make one and install a flat screen tv like a 20 inch, and a Xbox 360 than I can get my own mobile hotspot and I will be straight! Cause I been eyeing this idea for like a year, just I want to install electricity to, but solar panels so I don't have to keep buying a car batterie and installing it! So if I do go traveling I'll have entertainment and I can charge my phone just in case of emergency and I would install Bluetooth speakers
Paul Elkins Also a safe way, cause I don't want a fire to happen!
the framework in the base was phenomenal excellent idea🙋🏻♂️🇨🇱
Way to go son! That was awsome! Loved the lawn chair/woven floor! That was pretty creative! We need more ypumg men like you in this world!!!
Anyone of any age
Great job! A young man starting out on designing and building stuff - especially when enjoyed in the great outdoors. The 35 'thumb downers' probably have never tried anything more adventurous than using their fingers on a keyboard.
Hey, Matthew. I thought this was totally brilliant! I watched Paul Elkins video a few months back and came across yours soon after. I think you've done an amazing job. I'm 26 and think my attempt will be awful but you've definitely inspired me to give it a go. Have you made any changes or improvements to the camper since uploading this video? If so, I'd love to see what you've done in another video. I've subscribed just in case. Happy camping all the way from the UK! Martin.
Discamper90 I haven't made any changes yet but I might this summer, and if I do it will be in a video! thanks!
Nice build, cool to see the idea of the lawn chair material for the frame. Congrats on your trip and build.
I thoroughly enjoyed your video. thanks for posting
Awesome job brother, love the floor design.Great ventilation for those hot summer days. And that ride you went on with your camper insane effort .Proud of you champ.
Nice job. Nice video. Well done that young man.
You're young and impressive.
Keep up your inventive nature and continue to develop your skills.
I commend you. Your folks must be very proud.
All the best, Mal
Wow thanks for sharing this! Getting ready to make one myself!
Brilliant build. only thing I would have done differently is put an angle in the front similar to this /\ but does not need to be so sharply angled to give it a more aerodynamic profile and less wind resistance.
Cool project, looks very lightweight.
love your flore disigne . toghether with coraplast diy homless shelter and foldavam . to make the best of all.
Nice going kid. Rode a lot of bikes in my life and camped at koa's along the way.
Enjoyed the video. Safe ridings.
Lol “ cause some duck tape can fix anything” ... your camper is so cool! Thanks for sharing
That was awesome, I'm thinking about sizing one up for the mini bike.
Well done young man, neat work and great thinking. I hope you have lots of fun with your camper.
I like how you used the webbing for the floor that's an excellent idea! Best of luck in the future!
Great work and detailed video. Good presentation young man! Let’s see more please.
Some excellent design you did a great job. However I will stick with my easy to tote on the back of the bike folded large tent that I can stand up in. So much easier than pulling something large and bulky
자전거캠핑카 최고십니다
멋진 친군님 Thank you, my friend, I’m Singer Sunshine.
Great job
Excellent job young sir !
Looks great! I love the floor! Sometimes I sleep in the floor when my pup whines for me (the wife doesn't like her on the bed, #pug/glands.) And my body heat creates moisture and then I need to wait to air it out.I had planned to build one when I move and I am glad I saw this one thanks for posting
Great build + trip video, fun to watch - thank you!
Excellent job Matthew!
Very creative! Great job!
Nice work Matthew. Well made video as well. Keep it up man.
A well done project and video.
Looooovely making. Wish you lots of happy trips.
Good job...on the camper and the filming
Flatbed and a Snugpak ionosphere and a backpack FULL of goodies, stove,AQUAQUEST tarp, cordage ,water treatment, axe(firewood),
And TACKLE.
Good Idea , très ingénieux 👍🙏
It's awesome, I love it. Specially the windows, that's genius. I'm really interested in these because I've been considering making a velomobile camper. A velomobile of course is one of those enclosed pedal cars but I haven't seen anyone incorporate a camper into one yet. It wouldn't be hard to build one and attach your camper design to its frame somehow. Great job.
Great work 👍👍👍👏👏
nice job!
Dido to what Mr.Elkins wrote, great version, great project Matthew!!!!
This is really cool
Well done.
Good job dude! You should make these and sell them! I would buy one!
Great results! What was the final weight of the trailer with contents?
Nice job mate I love your effort keep going man next time put a Christmas tree in there
Gunnar Gulbrandsen thanks thats the best idea I've heard all day your great please give me more ideas I will do all of them
Otis couldn't understand why you wouldn't play with him. He was right.
great job enjoyed the video
i also made a cargo bike trailer based off his DIY bike camper, i added suspension to make it better! if you wanna put suspension on a trailer, check it out!
Awesome job young man!!! Good on you! I do have one concern regarding your design, if I may. I am thinking that you might need to seal off the bottom of the trailer with a plastic sheet for protection from moisture when riding in the rain. I think the water might make itself inside from the bottom/wheels when riding in the rain. Kudos!
Bravo Young Man!
I would use it as storage for a uber ride or a pizza delivery.
i'da thought the rain was perfect..... pull well to the side and sit inside.... thats the point of it !
great job......i hope you've used it again since then !
it could do with an aerodynamic front, that would help.
very very niiice dude!!!!!
I would love one like this but with a transparent roof so you can see the stars at night. Also would it be possible to make it more expandable somehow or would an add on tent be better?
Hi nice camper, where did you get the tow bar thanks.
im very surprized the wisconsin state troopers didnt pull you over.
fabric canvas tarp lite wieght 2 layers to insulated solar lights brasslite alcohol stove 15 minutes on 1 oz rubbing alcohol a fan for condensation
very nice /velmi pěkné/
cool :-)
I love everything.... Except the flooring. I have a real problem with the idea of ticks, spiders or ants being inside with me, especially ticks since I mostly camp in tthe middle of no where in woods or forest! I would have added the screen under or over it as well for extra protection.
He stated it has a bug net there too.
I thought he said he could put a bug net, not that he did. My bad...
It looks like a coffin vault Vlad.
Nice job
where did you buy the plastic
walt , I know you posted a year ago, but at home Depot you can get 10 4ft by 8ft sheets for 140.00. I think they sell them individually for about 23 dollars
What’s the name of the plastic you used?
Oopsie! Crashed into the garage door jamb! That doesn't bode well for travel across the country.
Big camper. What about wind ?
Cool
Two Kool, BUD.......
💪👍👍👍
Well done. That’s a great little camper. I have to correct you on one thing though, you said “duct tape an fix anything” it can’t fix a broken heart.
thanks
And they say millennials will never own homes!! 😅🤣
And then and then and then and then and then and then
What was the material you used for the roof and how long was it??
kailob dew It was corrugated plastic and was 8 feet long.
Matthew Schmidt thank you. Ive been wanting to build one
what happened under the rain ? if you cut when there is a problem it's not helping people. are you using it again, any improvt ?
padenom it rained when I was camping one night, and the windows and roof were water proof. it stayed dry on the inside. I also had to ride in the rain, and the wheel wells weren't completely waterproof because they were made of a bunch of small pieces of plastic taped together, so that's what I might improve.
where did you get the towbar from?
I bought the towbar online. It's called a Burley tow bar assembly.
👌🏼
The way the economy is going that might be your home
Make a stream lined recumbent shell and some how fit a bed space in it.
Nice job, have you put it to use yet?
I'm particularly impressed with the use of lawn chair webbing.
Considerably
less weight than plywood.
Yet structurally sound.
Good thinking young man.
I too am impressed! The way he interwove them together was great.
I'm in Oregon, mine will have plywood, grounds are wet here! Awesome build!
Great project, Matthew. Very, very cool. And I bet yours weighs WAY less than 50kg. 50 pounds, maybe.
And you can motorize your bike for under $200, and still use it as a bike.
Kudos!
Made me smile! And remember my one long bike trek back in 7th grade. I would think your biggest problem would be to find some public/free access to camp or rest. Based on my experience in that part of the country every park and lake is private. You all's welcome here in Missouri! Tired? Kids want to swim? You all's welcome in MO! Free!
boboala1
Where exactly in Missouri can you just park and use whatever park free? I'm in Missouri and you seem to be the most hospitable person here lol
Such a smart, clever and pleasant young man. Congratulations mate, you've done a great job -- you should feel very proud of yourself as I'm sure your parents are. You have a great mind, I hope you continue to use it !!! Safe travels Matthew, good luck to you ! xoxox
U did an awesome job. U inspired me to make one so I can go cross country when im older im 12
Very nice! Can't wait to start my build up. I am waiting for the election to end, so I can get free signs...haha
haha!
The majority of Americans do not know that-
Part of the problem - Hilary and Trump.
Part of the solution - Steve Saylor and Jill Stein
The only reason the problems are more interesting is more attention is given to them
Viking Shaman Please make a video once you finish it. Would love to see it. It is great seeing young people doing things to help themselves.
Regina Ghattas
Sure will do, no problem! I got a bicycle trailer hitch just a few days ago, really anxious to start the build!
Hillary signs were EVERYWHERE it was terrible
Man, I love the simplicity and effectiveness of this camper. The way you made the floor was genius, and I love the windows. Thank you for sharing this video, I'm feeling inspired to go build one myself.
Don't be down on yourself Matthew, you took on a big ride -- maybe you were a little ambitious to start ??? Doesn't matter you only fail at something if you don't try. -- this is what I tell my four children. You're a winner mate -- keep going !!!
Thanks for sharing. It looks like you made yours a little bigger than the original Elkins design? Very impressive in any case.
Bro this is awesome! Now I want to build one!
I have an idea, to help with the drag time. What if you where to make a four sided pyramid and place it in the front of your camper? The shape will cause the air flow to go over the top a bit better. Think of it as a spoiler, type deal. Because it must have been like dragging a wall around. The shape of the camper is awesome! I think you did a great job! You might have a career in engineering, you never know! I really like you use of the lawn chair strapping! What a genius idea, to weave it! I was really impressed!
Makes me want to build a supper cool camper! There is the video, of a man, that built this really cool little boat, out of some light weight wood? And glue and few switches. It has a little mother, and it's awesome. He also built a camper like yours, and a bunch of bikes and other cool stuff. My favourite is his little wooden boat. And then a other guy in Japan build one too! It's awesome! I can't remember the guys channel, but I'm sure if you search for it you can find it! Good luck in your future builds! Godbless.
Great Job Matthew! I love the design. And all the safety features. The window and overhang really add personality to your design. I would like to build one using aluminum framing with plywood and foam pad for the mattress and tow it behind my motorcycle. I would add a vent on top and a small propane burner for heating and cooking. And maybe a screened door for hot summer nights. Of course lights and a fan are a must have as well. I can't wait to build one myself thanks to you and Paul Elkins!!! Matthew, you are a creative genius! Thanks for Sharing! GJJ
Light hack... get a couple of dollar store solar landscape lights drill holes in top and hot glue them in. They will charge during the day and light at night. No switches or batteries. They are not extremely bright but will light enough to make moving about the cabin easier.
patr10t762 how would you turn them off when you sleep
+Matthew Schmidt. They automatically come on and have no switch. I would black out the bulb cover and put it on to conceal the light.
the ones from 99cent only stores have a switch
The guy who made the frist model used some thin insulation on the interior which would definitely come in handy when the wether turns cold.My other modification would be to use a thin piece of plywood for the floor. with some small wall or floor vents . But I like your design. Thank you.
The insulation also helps to keep cool inside.
matthew hi my name od eduardo sanchez and i am gathering youtubers in an effort to make these tipe of shelters/ bike camper for homless people with a bike. please e mail me if intreastes. love your camper.
Matt amazing job I'm trying to make one myself , I too will have the wheels on the inside , very smart . Protection. My question is, how much would u say that bad boy weighs?
In Mr Elkins video, he says that it weigths about 50kg, with bagage! :D
Caveman444 How would you fix a flat tire though? Do you have to bring tools and tubes and pumps with you?
Really good, man. I like the way you used corrugated plastic; the floor webbing with bug netting was so cool, too. I cycle-camped with a tagalong trailer (like your Dad's) in the '70's...wish I would have thought of something like this! You Rock! Make more...
The floor ventilation could be a very good idea and also reduce weight!
Good job I think. I‘m just starting to collect some ideas to build a bicycle camper myself. Got two questions:
1. What is the gross weight of your Camper approximately?
2. When ist started to rain on your tour did the camper stay dry inside? Because I very much like the idea to have it not like air tight with the way you constructed the bottom but I am concerned at the same time stuff laying inside would get wet in rainy weather conditions.
Why not make a bikecar/velocar (pedal-powered car) mini camper? That way you have both protection from the elements while driving, aerodynamics helping you get up to high speeds, and a place to sleep. You might have to have one for each of you, and include a storage area for all the things you need to go camping.
If you're making the bikecar/velocar, try to make it inspired from a good looking vehicle, like a Ford GT or a Lamborghini. That would like extra swag points for them looks.
great camper mate i am hopping to build one myself very soon just getting materials and parts together then inwillmstart building. i have been subed to pauls channel for a long time he has a great channel and gives me good ideas for my builds.
have a great day
