I totally agree with this. Since we are fish hobbyists, we of course come across with aquatic plants too. I do hope we can also help not only those places but other places too to keep the fish and aquatic plants community boom.

I just watched this video and laughed when you mentioned Java Moss. I’ve been watching 3 different Mom and Pop LFS who haven’t had it in stock for over a month. I finally got ahold of some so maybe I’ll supply them later
Oh god I just trimmed the moss in a fish bowl (no fish) I have on my sideboard that has only some sand and a half coconut shell with attached java moss - I couldn't believe how much moss came out of that bowl (that I never fertilize or heat and is only lit by a nearby window). I now have three 1.5 litre water bottles half full of moss that I don't know what to do with xD
We all go through sh*t in this crazy life, but thankfully there's always someone with their head above water to inspire us..Thank you for your tireless inspiration..Through watching your many vids you've genuinely encouraged & inspired me..I'm presently setting up a new tank to house my pair of Fire mouth Cichlids, although they get on well with my Angels & other tank dwellers, I realise they need & deserve a tank of their own..One small step for a man, but one giant leap for the mental health of both my fish & myself..God bless.. :)

Aquarium Co-Op - They already have in their present tank, guarding the eggs like warriors, but sadly the eggs were eventually consumed by other scaly, tank bound pirates..I've been slack, but soon they will be at peace in their own self contained space station..Would love to breed Zebra plecos or Red dragon Arrowanas, but I'm mindful that the love of money is the root of all evil, beautiful fish, but insane price tag..! Ironically, back in the day, I ended up with a tank full of 'Convict' Cichlids that nobody wanted for love nor money..Love your puffer fish, loads of character chomping through those clams & snails, but I think he/she would do well with a companion...Did you ever manage to eradicate that pesky Heron..?

I know your country is huge, but you have some incredible native fish, 30 years ago I visited Sri Lanka and seined some local streams and caught the most beautiful Black Ruby Barbs P. nigrofasciata. It made me get a group of them for my fish room, but even with planted tanks and live food they never compared. They were the biological highlight of my trip.
I really hope RFT comes back. I looked forward to that show every week. Fingers crossed that you will have time later. It's the interaction and jokes between you two that makes it for me.

I'm growing some crypt undulata "red", most I've seen is brown and low light examples still have some green. Mine are super bushy and purple, and when the undersides of the leaves hit the light, it looks like a velvety red. Absolutely love those crypts.
Idea for a future episode. Specifics about line breeding vs colony breeding. You have said in previous live streams that it takes 6 tanks to develop a line but I would like to hear more about what they are for. Then you have a video about setting up a new colony of guppies but how often do you do that? Is it a time thing? Is it generational? Is it when the tank reaches a certain population level? Thanks.

I would love to see more species profiles that last more than 5 minutes with pictures I love watching them and learning about new fish. but I don't think all the details can be told in such a short amount of time. I love love the real fish talk when it has a lot of information for me to grow and learn about the hobby. I think I really like the hardcore information better. Just saying!

As much as it hurts me, I agree with and appreciate all you said about RFT. I never missed watching an episode and sincerely enjoyed them. But that said, the goal -as I remember- was to attract and interview guests from all different aspects of the hobby. Maybe that can still happen, but as 'Specials' like when Gary Lange was on the show because he was in the area to speak at GSAS. It'd be great to have all the UA-camrs come out for a once a year special like when the RFT studio was first built. But that probably wouldn't work with the YT algorithm.- Argh! Well, I'm sure that if it can be figured out, you're the man to do it. I really do hope you and Joel get together on camera for livestreams occasionally because I love you 2 together !!
We definitely will be on camera together. We are traveling to Germany together, Hang out like 1-2 times a week etc. We just always have agendas to get done as well. I would rather promise nothing, and then over deliver. Unfortunately the first time we were relying on everyone excited to be on the show but then it not really working out with schedules.

Curious though if you could open a warehouse in the Midwest that does or has submersed plants would you jump on it? Shipping costs would save you a ton.. great video!
Hi Cory. Thanks for all the great info you put out.. By far my go to utube channel. I've a query... I recently bought lily pipes for my aquascape and the inlet pipe seems very short.. Tank hieght is 2ft...so, I'm a wee bit puzzled as to the ideal depth your inlet should be from the substrate... Can't find a vid on subject BTW... Cheers Cory.. I have all of my tanks planted, some in substrates some in pots on bare bottomed tanks. I grow java moss, java ferns, a small swordplant species that I was given because they were almost dead. They get about 6-8 inch long leaves and spread rapidly by runners growing small pups, and Watersprite that grows like a weed. I also breed some reptiles and invertebrates so I go to exotic pet shows where I sell fish, as well as my reptiles and inverts, I sell a lot of plants especially the surplus java moss, the sword and fern pups and cuttings of watersprite in bags. I don't get rich, but I sell enough plants at each show to add $50-$200 to my total sales. I agree with you, the java moss is like gold, I sell that first and never have enough. I have started using your plant fertilizer to see if I can get my tanks growing more java moss. The chain stores here, which is all we have sell tiny deli cups of the stuff for $5 and it was all gown immersed, not submerged. I am a Biology Professor and I plan to do an Undergraduate research project with some of my students this year comparing plant biomass growth with and without fertilizer under two different lighting schemes. 2 tanks with 10,000k and 2 tanks with 6500K. I believe I know the results but it is a great way to teach them the scientific method. I will stream the tanks to them on youtube and let them make observations.

Cory, personally I think you have put the bar to high for the real fish talk with the guest that needs to visit thing. I listen to so many podcasts that have remote guests on and they are just fine (like Sam Harris). If you would prep a laptop and a pretty good mic that you would ship to people that would like to be on the podcast you would have everything running just fine 99/100 times. The whole visiting of the guests is too limiting imho. Get a fairly rugged laptop with good webcam, get a proper mic and a flightcase and ship that sucker out to people that want to be on. Do a few pre-flights checks and you'll be rocking.
Unfortunately I'm not interested in shipping around a laptop and gear. People will delay shipping it back, delaying the next guest etc. Also the people who are doing it at that level are dedicated to a podcast. I'm dedicated to running a business. Thus, I can't put in more time for such limited gains when UA-cam has better returns on time invested and don't have to ship computers around etc.
I understand, but the result of that might be that the show you have been talking about in the past doesn't ever get of the ground, I'm just a bit sad because of that I guess because you presented such a grand vision. I was going to be the "biggest thing you would do for the hobby" etc. I am very happy that you picked up your own live shows again and upload those as podcasts. For me personally I learned the most from those because you often go pretty deep into certain matters and even if you think you are talking about the same subject for the 492 time you always say new stuff. Please never forget that nerding-out might not get you the most views but your hardcode base really does enjoy those video's a lot.
Perhaps this was mentioned and I missed it, but can't Cory just do a Skype call sort of thing for a podcast?
Yeah, he could be he wants the people to be in the same room with him. I understand why this would make the video better and it would also make the podcast better (less so but it's still true) so I understand his reasoning. Still, the fact of the matter is you can't expect to get that many guests that are willing to drive for hours or fly over to be on an aquarium-related show and are interesting to have on. It seem to mean the end for the show with guests for now. It was an ambitious plan with very high standards. Maybe they will come up with a new formula that will work in the future.
That 800 gallon thing was almost completely convincing. If that were true, there has been a lot of coverage for that manufacturer to be upset about.

It might be efficient to propogate cuttings emersed, in soil, under 100% humidity and then submerge them once they're established. I've noticed even very tiny cuttings have a high success rate using this method.

hello cory if i understand you when i buy a bunch of plants i should take them apart and plant say four to a small pot whit a feed pallet so by just dropping bunch in a pool is wrong way to keep them would a house lamp over the tank help plants i am on q very tight buget

hey guys, ive been wanting to grow different plants and sell them, right now i have some red root floater thats been propagating like crazy and doing amazing in my fish tank. only issues i have are 1. i know theres some, not alot but some detritus worms in the tank and 2. ive had a little bit of green bubbly algae between some of the leaves. i managed to cut it back and keep it down for the most part. what im asking is, is it ok if my plants have some algae on then when i go to sell? and the detritus worms too. i dont want to be selling plants that are " no good" but is that a problem? more or less looking for tips on the health of plants to sell and more info like that, thanks alot!
I have an 600 Gallon big cichlid tank with an 180G refugium connected to the main tank. It was once a sump but the tank now runs for enegry reasons on internal filtration. I Uwe the tank mostly for fry. I have 3 plant grow lights from amazon on this and the tank is full with Ricca and Java moos separated. I don't sell on a weekly basis and mostly offer bigger amounts but than by sheer amount i sell once per month plants for around 50 to 70 euros.
Also i keep three 65 Gallon rainwater barrels in the fish room and outdoors between April to october with shrimp from cherrys to rillys and sulawesi. Very low maintaince and high outcome. Also if a colony once is esteblished you can offer fast and regulary to the customer or market.
I still consider me an an more pasionated hobbist even if i have 6 Tanks between 600 and 100G and some very rare stock like breeding Auramanticulata but in the western World you can't really make a reasonable Profit as the hobbist. If you consider the time, resources and money you put in with that you get out at the end you basicly work for minimum wage or less.
For example. If i get Golden cobra Auramanticulata fry it needs around 3 to 4 months to bring them to selling size. In an 180G i can grow out around 50 of them long term. At the end i can sell them for 20 euros per piece retail while the LFS sells3them for 50 to 70.
The electricity, water and food for this cost me around 100 Euros per month so 1000 minus 350, im allready down to lets say 700 in profit. The tank need around one hour of maintaince per day so this is like 100 hours of work to grow them out. So i worked less than minimum wage. I only does this little side projects to maintain my hobby costs.

I want to grow aquarium plants for business. Do I have to add shrimp or snail to keep the algae to a low-level or can I grow aquarium plants without the snails and shrimps because algae won't grow?
Interesting, I tend to find the opposite, shops are cheaper than internet, maybe its a uk thing, the only problem there is that the shops aren't as likely to have what I want! Why are the shops cheaper? Delivery charges!
I wonder if there is a market for plants that are absolutely snail free? I grow 90% of my plants in snail free tanks that were all from tissue culture. I do not have snails and I have a lot of plants. So people can buy large plants from me snail and algae free which I have never been able to find anywhere so far.
August Vukosovich I bought plants from a guy and got snails. Had them ever since but my tanks were on hold during winter. I felt like I got the aquarium equivalent of an STD. So now I’m going to buy assassin snails, even though they are expensive. There is no other solution now. My fear is that the assassin snails will breed. I don’t want to use chemicals..
@@brandonkelbe Hearing stuff like this I agree that when you get snails and don't want them it's like your tank has disease. I think I will start selling plants that are snail free because they are so hard to come by. I have a 46 gallon with tons of plants I can sell and not one snail. It's awesome. I have a 20 gallon that are also all plants I grew from tissue culture so again, no snails. Thanks for your reply!

What about otos would a few of those per ten gallons keep the algae off the plants.
Typically if you're growing plants correctly you wouldn't have algae and otos starve to death pretty easily in a situation like that.

I don't get how places that sell or have a service to the public expect the bulk of people that work a business day (7-5) to break their work day to fit them. If you sell or have a service you should maybe stay open a little later so people can fit in after work. Like your channel though.

I don't understand why people hate duckweed. People who hate duckweed are the same ones who love daffodils but hate dandylions. Years ago I had an aquarium with only an undergravel filter. Hang on the back and sponge filter hadn't even been invented yet. I never did water changes but had enough plants I only did a gravel clean about every 2 years.
I live in Canada and I am pritty sure that I am unable to purchase your ferts as they would have a hard time getting over the border but on the big jug and on an auto doser. How long would that last in a 90 gallon tank?
