It's often forgotten that these warriors were just young men having to do extraordinary things in time of need. It must have been very hard on Speirs to return to the States without his young bride and son.
As heartbreaking as it must have been, I actually give her and her second husband credit for including him in their lives, and making sure he still got to help raise his son, it so often went very differently. Sad story, but could have been so much worse.
Ronald Speirs was born in the UK, and his parents were British (Scottish) from Edinburgh. He married a British woman, and his son became a Lt Col in the British Army. He's a true-fighting Briton 🇬🇧 I am pretty sure they did not stay together because his wife did not want to emigrate to the US.
Should have waited until end of war for marriage Discipline also involves controlling ones passions Winters managed okay and didn't marry until much later!
He showed he truly loved her by letting her go. He knew it wouldn't work if she was in love with the other guy. That to me is respect. Same for her. She could've hide it, or go behind his back and have the other guy as an affair or whatever. Instead they talked about it and respected each other. That to me makes me respect them a lot. None of them tried to force it for appearances of "because marriage". That's what being an adult is all about, you make it work, if not you respect each other and try to be happy elsewhere.
Sad. On the bright side, Mr. Speirs did have a good relationship with his ex-wife, her husband and his own son. Life is strange, especially during wartime. Had her lost lover not returned home alive, Mr. Speir's life would have been completely different. Everything happens for a reason, I suppose.
My grandfather on my mother’s side met and married my grandmother while stationed in England, and several of his friends met their wives there as well. I tend to think a 70k figure may actually be low.
Speirs was lucky. He came home in one piece. Physically at least. Those others who rest in some corner of a foreign field, or whose graves are marked “known unto God”. Young men who never knew the world without war.
Aww that's just wrong. Why even get married and have kids if you can be stolen that easily? So at least that's nothing new to soldiers, sadly. Dear John almost always makes his appearance for a married soldier.
Wrong would be to force a marriage that both know it wouldn't work. Would you stay with someone that you know is in love with somebody else? Would it be right for her to continue the marriage while being in love with the other guy? They did the right thing, they didn't forced each other "because of marriage". It's unfortunate but at least they stayed true to themselves. The marriage and the kid is what comes with impulses. It happens. But they showed they truly respected each other by parting way amicably. Frankly that alone makes me respect him more then if he stayed with her "because she's - my - wife".

This is a very common story seen in the military. Happens on a regular basis. When given opportunity and the right situation, women show their true nature. There is a reason Antiquity and the Middle Ages kept them on a short leash.
My Aunt Evelyn was a war bride from England. They moved to Canada and were happily married for many years after the war until he passed away.

Wow. Respect Speirs even more now for how he handled such an impossible situation.

Beautiful story.
Speirs had the mindset of a warrior, there's no love in war.
Wow what an amazing lovely gentlemanly story. No hate just respect honor and proper courtesy ❤ 🙏
my respect for speirs goes up the more i learn about him, that's a messed up situation!
Queen Elizabeth was an outstanding mechanic. What a woman!

Mr. Speirs later said that he never said anything remotely like that (referring to the already dead quote).
Yeah that quote is very Bagavad Gita

It's so true ,been there done that as the saying goes, if the government wanted you to have a wife they would have issued you one..lol

Was Spiers notorious for "liberating" silver items and shipping them back to his wife in England?
While that appears in the series and the Stephen Ambrose book, David Kenyon Webster's book seems to contradict this, stating, "In fact, as Captain Speirs, who had been decorated three times for bravery, more than once remarked, there was an inverse ratio between courage and looting." Lt. Speirs did what he had to do to survive.
This is a very common story seen in the military. Happens on a regular basis.

Are you serious?
Spares was the best soldier The band of Brothers. Imagine having 500 Spears
She didn't honor her vows. Period.
