I love it. I bought an old house in the small town near us just to redo and save it. It had the original claw foot tub, pedestal sink, parlor doors & oak trim. You can't build them like that anymore. We already have a new farmhouse on our 3rd generation farm & could never live in town, but we saved it from being torn down and sold it.
Thank you!
Renovate. Just know you’ll have a lot of work, but history is worth the price.
Ethelyn- get a structural engineer out there to take a look. It’s such a beautiful piece of history. It would be so neat to get to keep.
Beautiful place. I think a structural engineer could help you make a sound decision on this home. Hope you can keep it. Very unique and special.
LOVE THAT HOUSE. You should renovate..
I love old homes and if you're young and handy why not.? Old homes have so much history and character that you won't find in a new one. I always wanted an old home but only built and now we're too old to take on a restoration job. Good luck in whatever you decide..
We did a 1900 house that was left to rot down in a field. EVERYBODY told us to burn it down! Looks similar to yours, we found out it had been turned around when they made a new road. It was chaotic to say the least but we weathered it….and it was awesome! So gorgeous! We ended up retiring and moving to Hawaii but it was worth every tear, sweat and blood.
In the past they used to keep a room for travelers who needed somewhere to sleep. They had an outside door but no access to the family home. There was usually just a bed and washstand in there. Maybe that is what it was. I love the older home and the kitchen would make a wonderful guest house. I would definitely renovate. If it isn’t structurally sound maybe you could salvage the parts you love and incorporate them in your new home. I’ve just always dreamed of a big old farmhouse
I’m a designer and I see so much potential of what that place could be please don’t destroy it even if you build just keep the place up on the property fix the foundation and major issues so it can stand
I read somewhere that some old homes had a separate room off the porch as a guest room for weary travelers passing through. Maybe that is what that one room is.
yes
Makes sense to me
yes i agree, stranger room
You can’t rebuild old houses like that I would totally restore it.
New sub! Please try to save that house!! I love everything about it. It would be a great guest house, or family party house! We're losing our history so fast with old houses being abandoned. I hope you'll consider saving it!
Such a nice house
I love everything about it too
I do like older houses because they had style.
How are you Maureen? I hope you’re doing good with your family in this crazy covid?
Renovate the bones however thin are simply beautiful!
I absolutely love it! Please renovate it. Save it. Bring it back to life.
Restore it! Beautiful home! ❤️ I’d keep that small room and use it for a potting room. Put a potting bench in there with a large steel trash can full of potting soil, a small cupboard for gloves, hand tools, etc. and you’ll have a charming space!
This property is so fabulous. Please post again once you get going. Blessings!
Would be a dream renovation!!! That house is priceless
Yes, I would renovate in a heartbeat old houses have character you don’t see anymore once they’re tore down they’re gone
I just saw this on You Tube today. I can date this house by the doors and the other features. I place her around 1800 at the latest. We had a house that was built in 1795. This house is amazing. She is worth redoing the foundation to save the beautiful interior. Wish I would have seen this sooner. Hope you had good luck.
Yes I would renovate it. It's a beautiful house.
Amazing and beautiful old house! So much character! Hope you all were able to save it!
No insulation , knob and tube wiring , water lines are the old lead or galvanized pipe , old windows and doors letting in the cold air , just the tip of the ice berg once you start removing wall boards the construction will have to be strength and rebuilt in many places not to mention the foundation what ever field stone construction weather its just a crawl space or dugout any ways its good to see that the windows aren't busted out and the roof hasn't let in rain it would be a boatload of hard work it comes down to how much cash do you have to spend and how much of the work can you do to save money , good luck .
Absolutely Renovation. And that fact that your young. It had so much character, history and a story waiting to share.
This is a historic house. Other than the foundation it appears to have good bones. The wood walls and doors are gorgeous. And the floors are wood. No laminate could compare. Save the house.
I love old homes I absolutely adore it I’ve always dreamed of having an old home and trying to restore it that would be my dream home such a treasure how fortunate you are to have this home on your property you were truly blessed❤️🥰❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
My grandmother was born in 1899. I think the old place is gorgeous. Wish we had houses like it where I live.
Totally restore and renovate! This place is fantastic and in my opinion well worth the cost to bring it back to its original beauty, with modern updates!
I hope you've decided to renovate it. It's so gorgeous
I sure hope you save the boards on the inside walls and those floorboards. You can't buy wood boards that wide anymore, unless you have money to burn. That stuff is just about priceless.
This house was build during the wild western Era 😍
Oh wow, this is beautiful! I can just see it all fixed up. I hope it works out for you to do. Best wishes!
Thank you! God has a plan so we have faith it will all work out. It’s taking time but we’re all uphill from here 😁
that’s the best attitude and yes, He does! @@blackcatranch8028
U would look at cost. Its is beautiful
Look at how structurally sound the bones what is it all sitting on ,you a gem may be rough but it could shine...best of luck...
Run fast don't look back. I spent 16 years renovating a similar house. It's not worth it
I love it! Try to fix it up because there is so much beauty and history in the old farmhouse 😊
I would renovate this house and add on to it. It has history and character. Love old houses.
Definitely get it evaluated by an engineer, but build it and keep it. Too beautiful to let go.
Hi from Sydney Australia
🇦🇺
I would love 💗 to see you renovate this beautiful house
Can’t wait
God bless 😊😊
❤ ❤ ❤ History matters. Everyone love an old farm house like that. You all have the American Dream. Will be great.
Wonderful old soul bones in this lovely useful smart place, update plumbing, electrical but please keep her aged self and make her beautiful again
This house is charming! PLEASE, restore/renovate this home!
The little room on the porch, was accommodation for overnight strangers, without access to the house, for security.
Something you might consider, is picking up the house, reorienting it, and attaching the two parts for better convenience and flow.
I definitely recommend an architect who is sympathetic to old houses.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this house! I sure hope you saved it.
Oh yeah if I could afford it I would renovate it that place is amazing
Oh please renovate it. It is beautiful. Your so lucky to have it!!!
Absolutely love the house. Renovation would be your choice.
Love it all! Renovate for sure!
New subscriber...I just found this channel. I'm thrilled. That house is awesome.
It’s AMAZING!!! So much history, it would be a shame to demolish and not restore.
Yes! I would certainly take a look if its possible.
We just bought a place and have the same conundrum. 1880's farmhouse sold as a knockdown. Price was great for acreage alone but having the potential to renovate a old farmhouse was a bonus. Engineer said forget it, not worth saving due to foundation and roof. Well, to me that's a great extended project, even if I need to fix the foundation one stone at a time and throw a metal roof on to keep it dry. Not sure I'd renovate if I needed to live in it all the while but it pains me to think of knocking down a home with that much history and charm.
I grew up in an 1880's farmhouse. This brought back memories. It's long gone and the property is now covered by strip mall petty businesses. I dream of that house. Please don't tear this one down. At least you could salvage that beautiful lumber, fittings, windows, doors, etc. There is still so much value there that maybe can't be calculated in terms of dollars and cents.
Lovely old house.
The dogs seem happy. I'd go with it!
The ENTIRE house has those walls sister! It’s FILLED was amazing shiplap!
I would tear down the kitchen and dining room area and attach it to the main house . Just a classic old place! If structural! I would go for it!
Did you guys end up saving the house or did y'all demo it? Beautfil old farmhouse I could only dream of finding a property like this with an abandoned farmhouse and barn to renovate!
Love the house, we had floors in a house that bowed too, but as soon as we had heat into it, they went down to normal and stayed flat. I think that you should try to renovate it. I can picture a claw foot tub in your bathroom and open shelving in the kitchen area.
Love the old doors.
A lovely house. You should restore it!
Greetings from Germany.
I love that house. I would try to save it. I would use that room with a door but not opened to the house as my laundry room, or a craft room. Also, you could make that bathroom in the kitchen part a laundry room as well. Its a beautiful home! It will take time and money though, but if you got time, and can affordit or have resources to get it done. DO IT! Make it dream house.
Yr dogs LOVE it . They say let's move in here !
I recently purchased an 1821 farmhouse (which had been in my family 130 years) and had some similar issues to those you've described in this video... So I have some real-life experience on the matter. We set out to renovate our house. $100k in demo and bad news later, we were forced to demolish the house anyway. We did salvage most of the woodwork and timber framing and other materials, so the new house will have some of that old character, but I wish we'd just planned to demo it from the beginning. It would have saved us lots of time and money. Good luck to you! Search UA-cam for 200 Years and Counting if you're interested in our project...
It’s not in that bad of shape. I would go for it!
I think the dogs love it too
Yep, definitely!!!
Great house.
This house has so much potential. I would save the original part of the house and do a tear down of the kitchen add on. Save the lumber from the tear down for an out building or barn and try to carve out a kitchen area from the main original house. These old houses are true gems and you have the opportunity to be stewards to a great historical home if you just put a little TLC into it.
I WOULD RENOVATE IT ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL
Yes yes yes. But that’s easy for me to say. I don’t have to pay for it. But it’s beautiful with character and history. So you have to be careful for sure. But your doggos look happy. Best of luck to you on your decision!
A lot of people are saying that separated room was for travelers, which is a cool bit of trivia I never knew. Makes a lot of sense! I wonder if it could also be for a farmhand -- someone who needed to live on the property, but stayed separate from the family. Not sure what you decided to do, but I'm hoping if it was to tear it down that you stripped the house of all the salvage possible.
Have the house jacked up. Put in new basements. You could turn the house around to face the road. Connect the two structures with a breezeway.
It’s fabulous! Yes! Renovate!
Girl that is a summer kitchen for canning back in the day so the house wouldn’t get so hot. Restore. Restore. Restore!!! Yummy
Her "talking while driving the car"
Me "cute little doggos go😁😆"
I’m a farmer in south central Indiana, and down the road from me is an 1880s era house, it’s massive. When I was in high school, I took care of the owner at a nursing home, and when she passed away I was heart broken. A couple of years later I found out the house was hers. She never had kids, but had a bunch of nieces who own the house through a trust. I’d love to buy the house.
The choice to renovate or rebuild is a tough one The house does have paper thin walls and it doesn't have a basement under it those are two things that have to be addressed putting a foundation under it is going to be expensive no doubt about it and then doing something about the walls inside and it looks like it's only a two bedroom house and you're going to have to think about when you decide to have a family is the house going to be big enough. Someone else suggested to fix the foundation and have it as a guest house I think that would be a really good idea and build yourself a nicer place or a bigger place on the property. Then you would kind of have the best of both worlds.
If your foundation and floor joists.if it is solid or minimal work then I would definitely rebuild. You can go room by room at your own pace. This would be a beautiful family home to keep in the family.
I’ve lived this a couple of times…so I’m obviously a sucker for an old house…however, the advice someone gave about getting a structural engineer out to evaluate it is good. Check for mold…leveling and strengthening the house will be a budget line item and a big one. You’ll have to build out on those thin walls somewhere to shore it up and house pipes and wires. The roof will probably have to be replaced…you’ll need a well and septic but you’ll need that anyway if you build new. How is the driveway coming into the property? Don’t forget to put money in the budget for that. Getting stuck in your own driveway is no fun. How about tree work? Put money in the budget to clean up any overgrown or dead trees that are close to the house or out buildings. Trees blown down in a storm can do a lot of damage. If you can get these big things addressed then you’ll have fun doing all the rest of it and it’ll be beautiful.
Indeed I would renovate
Please restore! Looks like that empty single room was originally a kitchen-- would be great to open up the back wall of it to access the front dining room!
This place is amazing!!
Beautiful house
I think it would cost way more to renovate then it would to take it all down and rebuild. Sounds like there are too many structural issues I would be a total gut job...and new foundation to boot. Not too mention more bathrooms, plumbing, electrical, etc. You can remove the wood you like, also doors and other things and put it in your new house.....You can also nearly replicate the old house in m any way. I see major headaches, frustration, regrets and lots and lots of $$$ in renovating.
We have a similar situation, house built in the mid 1800s, roof leaks, stone foundation with vines coming through, no insulation, etc. At some point, we'll post a walk through.
Omg! Keep the original part. It could be gorgeous! Tear down the added on parts and build onto main part with new wood if you want to add on.
Worth restoring !
Very pretty house
It depends on the asking price for the whole property and the acreage? How much money will you have to invest and will that be worth the investment of the upgrade on the home? There are a lot of factors to look at! Weigh it out! It is so pretty up stairs and I love the Fireplaces! Gina
Such a nice house
I love everything about it
I do like older houses because they had style
How are you Gina? I hope you’re doing good with your family in this crazy covid?
Yes , Keep it and Restore the house
I just ran across this vid but see that it was made 4 years ago! I would definitely try to restore if finances permit and the foundation was sturdy. I would to love to know the REST of the story. Subbed but didnt see an update video 😢
Me too. It's just passed 5 years old now & I scrolled for update vids, but no joy. The channel's content seems to be horse-related. 😢
Whatever you do save the beautiful wood.
I'd strip every painted wall. That heart pine is super valuable. Probably 150 grand, maybe more if taken apart carefully.
We were gifted a family property with a house just like this. What did you end up doing?
Old house looks great l would restore it, preserving it as near to how it originally was. No l would not renovate it only change back, not change to some passing trends. It would be worth more than any new house and so much more satisfying. I love the old charm this house has. You cannot get that in a new home or any house that's not of the era this house was built.
A beautiful old home with a lot of history behind it. Seems like it is still solid, except for the foundation. There has got to be a way to save it. If I had the money I would in a heartbeat.
This house reminds me of the houses that were built for summer tourists. I say build a new house and use what you can to embed character into your new building.
Such a nice house
I love everything about it
I do like older house because they had style
How are you Rosie? I hope you’re doing good with your family in this crazy covid?
I would restore you could make that old house beautiful. Get someone like this old house team to help you with ideas
I know that this comment is way out of date. But if it was me, I would very carefully deconstruct the house, saving all the materials, and construct a more usable house using the materials from the old house.
Renovate the main house, tear down the other half and build a kitchen dining and bath addition attached useing as much of the old stuff to keep the same ascetics.
Yes, please. I wish I could do this.
It has good bones? It was built with what the person could get for the materials at the time. It is beautiful! You cant get wood like that today! Ir would be gorgeous redone! The would just blows me away! I like the layout of the downstairs!
I’ve seen several videos about people that go in and buy really old houses to “renovate“. Then they tear out the floors and replace all the floor joists and put in new floors. Then they tear out the walls and put in new plumbing and electrical and put up new walls. Then they put on a new roof. Then they go to work on the outside, putting in all new windows and trim elements. Then they want to call the place “renovated”. They’ve just taken it apart piece by piece and replaced everything. I do love the wooden walls. But you’d probably be better off doing a controlled demolish and rebuild, as it is basically what these other people have done. Save some of the prime elements and rebuild everything else, because most of the time it’s too far gone to repair and you have to rip it out and replace it anyway.
You should always try and save history no matter what.
Once it’s gone it’s gone there’s no bringing it back.
No visible access to the attic, that’s a bit strange.
A update would be great
I love the old house but it will take lots of money to make it livable in the modern age. It needs to be plumbed, wired and insulated and that's after the foundation is fixed. It also most likely needs a new roof.
You'll have to get a contractor out to evaluate the house.
