I think he's at a stage where he can understand it perfectly but struggles to speak it fluently, it's a stage many people encounter with learning a language. I'm getting to a point in learning Welsh where I can somewhat understand, but still have a ways to go in replying in the language.
Being Latino, I keep seeing the trend of Latin players,who speak English, use translators. I'm guessing their ball club or MLB is motivating the player to speak their native languages to grow the audience on the network and/or grow the game even more. My 2 cents.
