  • On March 24, Grisel Carmenaty, 28, was riding her moped when a distracted driver hit her. The impact sent her flying into the air and onto the driver's vehicle. She was rushed to Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial, where she was diagnosed with a fractured femur and vascular trauma to her groin. While in surgery, she suffered a massive pulmonary embolism, a condition in which one or more arteries in the lungs become blocked by a blood clot. As a result, her body began to shut down. Carmenaty received cardiopulmonary support to improve her blood flow for a few days. While still on a circulatory support system, she underwent a successful embolectomy to remove the pulmonary embolism. Ten days after her accident, she was well enough to undergo surgery to repair her fractured femur. After nearly a month in the hospital, Carmenaty was discharged.
