Rotten Trees Means No Lumber for the homestead here in North Idaho. The white pine species are a softer wood and so the bark beetle and carpenter ants can easily get into them and kill them. I am harvesting mostly the white pines so that I can turn them into lumber before they die off. I plan to leave the hardier species such as red firs, tamarack and cedars because the bugs tend to leave them alone.
