- Sergei Prokofiev - Lieutenant Kijé
Played by the Orchestre National de France under the direction of Lorin Maazel.
The main melody is used as sort of a chorus in the song 'Russians' by Sting.
One of the most beautiful pieces ever written in the music history.
True 🙏
you can write this ...
I quite agree

I just discovered that Sting got the impetus for his song, "Russians" from this composer. I love both songs. And I love learning about music, old and new.
Hi friend check out Sabac Red - Speak militant .. Peace
One Russian film company that used to make great movies in the 90s and 00s also used it as an intro for their films.
Yes russians samples this and its amazing, true artistry
1:09 gives me goose bumps. The whole piece does, really. Prokofiev truly is a master of the melody.
After my music teacher let us listen to this i couldn't get it out of my head

Russians brought me here. I adore classical music and know a lot of pieces but this one had elduded me for ages. It's really nice and evocative
Funny, Blood Sweat and Tears version of Traffic's 40 000 headmans brought me here.
Stings "The Russians" brought me here. It's a beautiful piece of music.

Sting indeed. I overheard a friend of mine once playing the melodic refrain on her flute and, of course, loving this Prokofiev piece, I commented excitedly, "Oh, you're playing Prokofiev!" She corrected me, "No, I'm playing Sting! Who's Prokoff what?"
THE STAR POWER TEAM What on earth are the teachers teaching nowadays!?
THE STAR POWER TEAMgv
ha ha ha ha ha....prokof...what????
"Who are the Beatles?" yup, it's a new world hahahah
This is film music people. And Prokofiev invented the modern soundtrack genre. He doesn't have a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Stravinsky does and so does Leonard Bernstein. I think Sergei who gave us this very magical and theatrical style of film music deserves a star. Besides he wrote this before any of the Hollywood composers were household names.
Kamarad Prokofiev doesn't care for a star in hollywood
+buskov: Sure he does. Prokofiev bought a car in Hollywood and was fascinated with the place. Besides Stravinsky has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and he contributed nothing to film music.
+Marc Parella He didn't invent the modern soundtrack, not as much as De Bussy or any other musician from the 19th. he 'just' was a great composer. it's the other way around : contemporary composers (Zimmer, Horner ...) got inspired by classical music.
I really think a lot of the classical composers would be doing music for movies. Back in their day they had to get funding from some King or Nobleman. Today they could just work in the free market.
Marc Parella
Im so impressed that Sting could made a modern new song, inspired by this and keep the beauty in it..
inspired? I would say that he copied the music completely and only added the lyrics to it.
Listened to this song in a music lesson at school. Normally music lessons are kind of boring as I suck at it, but damn this song is beautiful, really moved me.
I'll write a fanfic romance about Severus Snape while listening to this. Omg really it shattered my heart so much ❤️
J'adore Prokofiev tout comme j'aime la variation made in Sting dans Russians !
Bravo Sting for finding such a great theme by Master Prokofiev
What a gift from heaven he was, his genius leaves me speechless.
His father, Sergei Alexeyevich Prokofiev, was an agronomist from a mercantile family in Moscow. Prokofiev's mother, Maria (née Zhitkova), came from a Saint Petersburg[12] family of former serfs who had been owned by the Sheremetev family, under whose patronage serf-children were taught theatre and arts from an early age
Probably one of the most touching pieces I have ever heard in my entire life, this Romance section is something beyond our comprehension.
Not only cinema music but this exquisite piece made it as a musical quotation in Sting's "Russians" from his first solo album in 1985. It's used most effectively, too. I hope it's brought a few people from that world to hear the whole Suite.
Speaking of John Williams, whose talent is considerable, his famous march from Star Wars is very much influenced by the march from The Love for Three Oranges, to give one example.
Always mysterious and lovely, is Prokofiev.
One of my all time favorite pieces. So beautiful.
Few appreciate the contributions of Prokofiev~ decades of cinema music, TV themes, yes Hogwarts etc were born of this brilliant mans innovations! One of the most beautiful pieces ever (including the future!)
I just listened to this three times in a row and I don't know why I'm wasting my time writing this comment when I should be hitting the play button for a fourth
I was watching a movie from 1958 " Horses Mouth" with Alec Guinness and halfway Through i heard this tune which i was wracking my brains out to think where i had heard it before AND BINGO i remembered Sting singing this , I didnt realise but Sting Basically stole the Music and added his own Lyrics But he did give Prokofiev Credit on the Song Listing , Absolutely Beautiful piece of Music .
I think this is such a beautiful piece of music...I love it so much. I think Prokofiev is incredible...
You probably don’t even remember writing this comment, maybe you don’t own your account anymore… but I wanted to say hi, just to remember you something.
"I will have that power" brought me here :D I found this classic again :D

When the Celeste comes in, it really hits me in the feels and then on the next part with the saxophone and flute... Idk it just feels really nostalgic for some reason...
oh, the crying double basses....:)lovely
I think this is my favorite classical music piece. I find it really ...I don't know how to describe it...Maybe these adjectives: Powerful, sincere, deep, gloomy, dreamy and ,... utterly Russian !!!! (at least what I imagine Russia to be like from my imagination).
Solo bass then joined by a solo viola. And then followed by a solo on the celesta at 1:10. Prokofiev is Orchestration City! Woo hoo!
Sting brought me hete. beautiful

Really beautiful piece. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting ir!

very beautiful music
i love it
I'm shure Sting loves this song too ;)
Sounds like you're sure of that.
He took all the romance out of it and turned it into a communist Dirge though. Prokofiev was not a communist, nor is this haunting romance a dirge. I do love "Russians", but I think he could have picked a different tune.
Awesome I actually saw this live performance but not by the Orchetre de France, but the Orchestre de Paris. Brought my level of music appreciation sky rocketing!!!
More than beautiful :)
I love this music, it reminds me of a cold -30 degree day, with the brilliant white snow and the sun shining. Northern Canada is beautiful but brutal in winter. The stars seem to twinkle more, and the freezing air clean and pure. Prokofiev was persecuted by Stalin. His music is timeless.
"Prokofiev was persecuted by Stalin"
What a nonsense! Prokofiev was CREATED by Stalin as well as the whole great Soviet culture.
@@gobodrodiont no. Stalin repressed Prokofiev. Read history, this famous story.
@@TheLarastarr I know my history much better than you and I don't need to read your russophobe antisoviet propaganda. Prokofiev was 6-time winner of Stalin's prize and favoured by Soviet government.
Haha, good one. The soundtrack to Gladiator also references this awesome theme ;)
Blood Sweat and Tears also used this melody in their version of 40,000 Headmen on BS&T3. They also used Monk's I Mean You in the same tune, and in fact played all three melodies at the same time towards the end of the song
YEAH!
And Variations Angli Piano from B. Bartok, too.
He's awesome.
I love it so much.... I listened it when I was young...
Beautiful.
This is such a brilliant work!
his music wonderful
+Carmela Pedinni Sting was the former lead singer of The Police. On his first solo album, he adapted the melody from this piece into the bridge between verses in his song "Russians". I had never heard the original Prokofiev piece until now.
What I love about Prokofiev is he lends a 20th century Russian take on classical music composition. To me it is dark yet beautiful, like an old fairy tale.
Prokofiev was Ucrainian, not russian

Exact, merci le cours de musique 😂
I love this, its my 100% favourite classical piece. A around the 2:05 min. mark is the best.
Sublime
comme hitler XD
"I hope the Russians love their children too"...
Yes. We love them. With sauce. But seriously, do you doubt? No need.)
+russianguy it's a reference to sting's "russians" song.

This makes me think of dwarves, winter snow, and mountains
Good music!
No words can sum this up
Wow! I love prokofiev damn it!
This is the magic with music: if it's good, it feels like it's best:)
The song uses the Romance theme from the Lieutenant Kijé Suite by Russian composer Sergei Prokofiev

@samo314159 As I said in the video information, it's by the Orchestre National de France, the French National Orchestra. Directed by Lorin Maazel.
I feel I must give a random answer to this comment.

Sting based his song Russians on this masterpiece
♡ meravigliosa

I have this on cd where Fritz Rhienhart is conducting this master piece. It is the best that I've heard (the Fritz Rhienhart one).
This piece is wonderful, one of the best melodies ver written by Prokofiev. It sounds to me like an old jewish song, I don't know whether this can be confirmed or not.
Not really.
¡Precioso!
We share the same biology, regardless of ideology
:D its awesome
Sting has always admitted to getting inspiration from Prokofiev... No plagiarism at all
He didn't talk about the real author a lot if you don't ask him, a smart business man this Sting....
Also it passed into the public domain
Is identical...
majestic.....
Love it!

It's great.

I learnt how to play this at school :3
Hey, I remember this from Sting's "Russians"!
This is my fav classical piece :$
This melody is also used by Blood Sweat and Tears as an intro to one of their songs. I think it's 40,000 headmen.

Curious that you say this. I think that Prokofiev had a strong influence on John Williams. Wish I knew more about it... if it's true. Good day to you and to all!
@janchor They still put his face on a postage stamp. The ultimate honor.
Well this was actually just composed as a movie soundtrack, but then again, I find that most modern music that I like come from movie soundtracks.
@rhapsodyblue56 I am afraid he was referring to the Sting song "I hope the Russians love their children too"
