Yeah I've never had one that tastes like chocolate. It looks like chocolate... If you scoop it all out and whip it with a little sugar and cocoa powder and cool it in the fridge its damn good. But it's also kind of cheating. What doesnt taste good with sugar and chocolate added.

I got one here in Hawaii at a farm festival it was black on the outside and super rich dark and pasty on the inside.. it tasted like dark chocolate pudding mixed with prunes. it was very tasty and strange but good. little intense so it took me all day just tasting bits of it throughout the day. what was most surprising was that it tasted just like chocolate. I think the taste of fruit can vary depending where you get it and by what means it was grown and harvested.

We, in Mexico, are very aware of the "Sapote Negro", we used to find them under a great tree in our Aunt's house in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Also had it in Zacatecas, Merida Yucatan. The way I learned to eat it is adding sugar over a low flame, just the peeled clean fruit. You add some Sherry give it a gentle boil to burn off the alcohol, take off the heat. Have a freezer-safe container and put the pure in the mold and freeze. Serve like ice cream. You can also serve chilled with some whipped cream

Never commented on your videos before, but have been a very long time viewer. No one in my personal life shares my deep fascination and love of exotic and rare fruits. Ever since a visit to Thailand when I was 19, and found weird and wacky fruit being sold by vendors, I have never stopped looking for, and trying, as many rare fruits as I can get my hands on. Unfortunately being stuck in the UK and Europe most of the time, I have to buy very expensive fruit from the supermarkets or African/Asian stores whenever they appear. SE Asia is close to my heart and watching your travels and videos are the next best thing to experiencing it myself. So thank you for these! we have finally had the chance to try these here in Tenerife for the very first time from a tropical nursery, that gave it to us right from the tree as a gift, the first one was ready and ripe and the other one took maybe two more weeks to be mushy, we loved the texture and the taste very much, we sprouted the seeds and now growing little plants, very excited ! it’s hard to get fruits here let alone trees, so we feel very grateful 😍 do you have a place in NY to grow plants ?

hey Jared! I found an awesome fruit for you to explore. It is called the gummy worm or gummy bear fruit, and it is the fruit of the Cecropia tree and birds tend to favor them. they're shaped like a green gummy worm and is very tropical and fruity tasting, and has the consistency of a gummy worm. awesome looking fruit!

you mentioned that its of the persimmon family. well persimmons is also basically flavorless and they also have a kind of nutty flavor, very interesting.
Properly ripened persimmons have a lovely sweet flavor. Well Asian persimmons, anyway (Diospyrus kaki). Black sapote (Diospyrus nigra) looks exactly like a black persimmon - since it is. Everything about it looks the same, with the same appearance and kind of somewhat stringy soft texture except that it's black inside when fully ripe and the outside is green. It does taste different though. The one I ate was disappointingly not really like chocolate pudding, but it did taste good, as far as I recall.
They look a lot like persimmons. I just googled it. Apparently they belong to the same genus, which is diospyros. Then I got to the point in the video where he talks about the persimmon connection. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diospyros I wonder if you could cross the two or graft sapote onto persimmon for greater cold tolerance.
I've never had a black sapote but I can say from experience with Longans that the ones that have started to sprout are less sweet. So maybe the one you reviewed was tainted by the fact that the seeds had started to sprout.
That was so sad. So many years of waiting to find out it is so so. It looks like chocolate pudding. There you are looking at this delicious chocolaty goo. You take a bite and....eh. Just eh. So, so sad. Hopefully they are good in smoothies.

I believe the germinated seed might have affected the taste. Like the Fujian longan (or matoa), the seed absorbs the goodness of the fruit to germinate. So I believe your fruit was over ripe, therefore the disappointment. If it is indeed a persimmon variety, then you'd have to treat it like a persimmon, to eat it before it starts to wrinkle.

it's a little ridiculous to call it chocolate fruit just for the color... you should let it mature much much more until the skin rips and the pulp is very soft and like mashed up, that's the moment to eat it... and it's super sweet and delicious. and you can mix it with orange juice, that's a way to enjoy it, here in méxico
wow - didn't expect that you'd find it bland Overripe perhaps?. I have a huge black sapote tree right outside my window, and it's one of the things I never get sick of - they're so tasty. I usually mix it up with a little cream and a dash of maple syrup and grate some dark chocolate over the top.
Black sapote is one of my favorite fruits (along with little sweet banana and dry plum) Never have I experienced a "chocolate pudding taste" with a sapote... Just a sweet treat, sometimes dry, sometimes "glossy" It doesn't have a fruity taste I love to eat the strange membrane around the seed which has a strange texture : it's like bitting into a fine slice of cooked apple ( the one you find on a good apple pie) Hope one day, you'll experience the joy that I had when was a kid to taste a good black sapote
my guess, for a fruit like this, it might be ahealthier alternative to chocolate puddings and deserts, and they have to be prepared as such. being so soft, i could totally see it being blended more and turned into a real pudding consistency, and add a bit of sugar and other flavors like vanilla, and it could be a completely organic natural pudding substitute

I think black sapotes taste good. It's true the flavor is mild, and not like chocolate, but I find it very pleasant. It's something like persimmons with hints of nutmeg.Maybe you did get some bad ones. I have some black sapote seedlings I started this year. Get back to me in about 3-4 years and I'll tell you if I get fruit from them.
Yeah, I've been hearing that you can get some trees that produce more flavorful fruit than the ones I got. Not chocolatey, but more than sweet mush. Good luck with the tree!
+Jared Rydelek Wild American persimmons are certainly quite varied in terms of intensity of flavor, and especially texture. Weather also seems to affect the way they ripen. Maybe there are some better ones out there still!
I have a tree. They take forever to ripen. I leave them on the tree for almost 18 months until they get soft.. Yours was still so green. Mine start to turn yellow when ripe. I think they are better right off the tree.
Ha--if that's the Robert's in Florida City I used to live about a mile from there! We had all kinds of fruit in our yard, except guavas--my grandfather forbade them.
Theres a lot of different black sapote cultivars. Some of them really do have a mild chocolatey flavour, and the texture is veryrich and pudding-like. There's also usually that greenness that you smelled in the background of the flavour, so you still know you're eating a fruit. They aren't the absolute best fruit ever by any stretch, but definitely enjoyable and interesting. Just find a good one.
I know it’s been four years now but I’ve heard that if you blend black sapote with dates and cacao powder it makes a nice chocolate pudding, which you may have already discovered.

I agree on your flavour thoughts exactly & I guessed every word you said after tasting it as it was the same in my experience but I still brought it again cause I looked for it for so many years. I guess it's known as the black pudding fruit or chocolate Sapote only cause of colour and nothing else.
I tried this for my first time at a market in Mexico when I was 5 years old - 1985. I did something to get grounded from dessert later that day and therefore from having more of the 'Chocolate Pudding Fruit' we'd brought back to the hotel. In my mind it was amazing and quite like chocolate pudding and I've been hoping to try one again ever since, but I'm comforted 35 years later that it was really just meh 😂🙏
I live in Idaho (zone 6) and have a year and a half old tree that I ordered from Ecuador. I keep it in a container so it can come inside for the winter. I'm hoping that it will bloom in another couple of years. I just hope these aren't single gender plants. It would suck if I had to have two to pollinate.
I felt the same exact way when I tried it. I tossed the seeds in the yard anyway and of course they grew like weeds. Of course because I don't care for them they'll likely produce a ton of fruit. 😆
If it’s related to persimmons, I wonder if you can ripen them the same way. I usually ripen persimmons by popping them in the freezer. I take them out and thaw them out. When they’re thawed they become incredibly ripe. The consistency of the black sapote reminds me of dates. I wonder if it tastes similar to dates? I’d love to try it even if it was a let down haha
This is a big reason I haven't taken the dive to ordering from Miami fruit. I grt the pricing, but these things are ridiculously expensive for what often turns out to be what we consider a bland fruit. Cultures have different tastes, and the "tropical" factor plays such a huge role. I've tried a lot of ripe, supposedly amazing fruits and they're just different, but not good. I'm past the point in my life where anything novel is instantly going to probably be good
Jared can you share with us how it tasted as a smoothie, blended with other fruits? I tried it with a little evaporated milk and coconut sugar...and it tasted pretty good! :)
I actually ended up blending the rest with some coconut cream and put it on waffles. It was very tasty. Not chocolate tasting, but a nice sweet coconut taste.

I am by no means an expert gardener, but the black coloration looks like the plant had a severe aphid infestation. Notice the fruit in second attempt had no black color on the upper hemisphere.
Are they not freezer safe? Was it possible to freeze them until you got back and then let it ripen? I would think the texture wouldn't be affected much

Wait until it's not brown but black, that would be when it becomes chocolate-like in flavor.
It would make sense if instead it tasted like caramel/coffee sort of flavor, which is absolutely a flavor that can be found in fruit alone.
Pickles would taste awful with sugar and chocolate so would steak ramen noodles chicken soup and many other things

it's a little ridiculous to call it chocolate fruit just for the color... you should let it mature much much more until the skin rips and the pulp is very soft and like mashed up, that's the moment to eat it... and it's super sweet and delicious. and you can mix it with orange juice, that's a way to enjoy it, here in méxico

wow - didn't expect that you'd find it bland Overripe perhaps?. I have a huge black sapote tree right outside my window, and it's one of the things I never get sick of - they're so tasty. I usually mix it up with a little cream and a dash of maple syrup and grate some dark chocolate over the top.
Black sapote is one of my favorite fruits (along with little sweet banana and dry plum)
Never have I experienced a "chocolate pudding taste" with a sapote... Just a sweet treat, sometimes dry, sometimes "glossy"
It doesn't have a fruity taste
I love to eat the strange membrane around the seed which has a strange texture : it's like bitting into a fine slice of cooked apple ( the one you find on a good apple pie)
Hope one day, you'll experience the joy that I had when was a kid to taste a good black sapote
my guess, for a fruit like this, it might be ahealthier alternative to chocolate puddings and deserts, and they have to be prepared as such. being so soft, i could totally see it being blended more and turned into a real pudding consistency, and add a bit of sugar and other flavors like vanilla, and it could be a completely organic natural pudding substitute

I think black sapotes taste good. It's true the flavor is mild, and not like chocolate, but I find it very pleasant. It's something like persimmons with hints of nutmeg.Maybe you did get some bad ones.
I have some black sapote seedlings I started this year. Get back to me in about 3-4 years and I'll tell you if I get fruit from them.
Yeah, I've been hearing that you can get some trees that produce more flavorful fruit than the ones I got. Not chocolatey, but more than sweet mush. Good luck with the tree!
+Jared Rydelek Wild American persimmons are certainly quite varied in terms of intensity of flavor, and especially texture. Weather also seems to affect the way they ripen. Maybe there are some better ones out there still!

I have a tree. They take forever to ripen. I leave them on the tree for almost 18 months until they get soft.. Yours was still so green. Mine start to turn yellow when ripe. I think they are better right off the tree.
Ha--if that's the Robert's in Florida City I used to live about a mile from there! We had all kinds of fruit in our yard, except guavas--my grandfather forbade them.
In the central Hill Country of Texas we have a Black Persimmon it is very small really dark fruit color and is very sweet.
Sounds like a Texas Persimmon, I reviewed that at some point- very tasty one!
Theres a lot of different black sapote cultivars. Some of them really do have a mild chocolatey flavour, and the texture is veryrich and pudding-like. There's also usually that greenness that you smelled in the background of the flavour, so you still know you're eating a fruit. They aren't the absolute best fruit ever by any stretch, but definitely enjoyable and interesting. Just find a good one.
I know it’s been four years now but I’ve heard that if you blend black sapote with dates and cacao powder it makes a nice chocolate pudding, which you may have already discovered.

I agree on your flavour thoughts exactly & I guessed every word you said after tasting it as it was the same in my experience but I still brought it again cause I looked for it for so many years. I guess it's known as the black pudding fruit or chocolate Sapote only cause of colour and nothing else.

Mix it with vanilla ice cream, then you will get the chocolate flavor. It’s very rich when fully ripe and delicious in a shake.
This thing tastes great when properly prepared though. Black sapote Ice cream is really popular.

I tried this for my first time at a market in Mexico when I was 5 years old - 1985. I did something to get grounded from dessert later that day and therefore from having more of the 'Chocolate Pudding Fruit' we'd brought back to the hotel. In my mind it was amazing and quite like chocolate pudding and I've been hoping to try one again ever since, but I'm comforted 35 years later that it was really just meh 😂🙏
In Mexico it is eaten mixed with orange juice and sugar, and then made as ice cream... it is REAAAAALY GOOD!!!!!!

I live in Idaho (zone 6) and have a year and a half old tree that I ordered from Ecuador. I keep it in a container so it can come inside for the winter. I'm hoping that it will bloom in another couple of years. I just hope these aren't single gender plants. It would suck if I had to have two to pollinate.

Yes they have have very little flavor. I like that, I don't really like really strong tasting fruit so I enjoy the blandness.

If it’s related to persimmons, I wonder if you can ripen them the same way. I usually ripen persimmons by popping them in the freezer. I take them out and thaw them out. When they’re thawed they become incredibly ripe.
The consistency of the black sapote reminds me of dates. I wonder if it tastes similar to dates? I’d love to try it even if it was a let down haha
This is a big reason I haven't taken the dive to ordering from Miami fruit. I grt the pricing, but these things are ridiculously expensive for what often turns out to be what we consider a bland fruit.
Cultures have different tastes, and the "tropical" factor plays such a huge role. I've tried a lot of ripe, supposedly amazing fruits and they're just different, but not good. I'm past the point in my life where anything novel is instantly going to probably be good

I actually ended up blending the rest with some coconut cream and put it on waffles. It was very tasty. Not chocolate tasting, but a nice sweet coconut taste.

I am by no means an expert gardener, but the black coloration looks like the plant had a severe aphid infestation. Notice the fruit in second attempt had no black color on the upper hemisphere.
You can always add a teaspoon of Hershey's chocolate syrup and mix it. Pretty good
