Took these pickups out of my LTD Deluxe Guitar I got on Friday. These would have to be the worst pickups I have ever gotten from DHgate/ AliExpress on a guitar or brought. 🍻
I fixed some microphonic active chinese pickups I bought some years ago, not emg branded though they should be the same. I thought they didn't wax potted them very well so I cracked the epoxi resin on the back to check them out and the wax was all crumbly which confirmed my suspicion, they did have a active circuit inside. I pre heated the oven to 50 degrees and put them cooking for half an hour with the cover facing down and resin facing up. I let them cool down for some hours after that and the microphonic sound was gone!!! 😎 You don't need to crack the resin to try the fix, 50 degrees Celsius should not damage the plastic at all so you can go ahead and do this if you have the same problem :P In the end after all that messing around and fixing I got awesome sounding active pickups😃
@@getonitguitars6908I'm glad if my tip helps someone :) microphonic pickups are usually due to wax not melting enough to fill the gaps between the copper wire bobbin since wax melts at relatively low heat I gave it a try. I was really surprised it worked 😄 the wax must cool down really slowly though, I don't know if they rushed it on the factory and it cracked during handling/transportation 🤷
I have two sets of real 81&85s in my LTDs. I ordered a set from dhgate and the Chinese ones sound almost identical. I would say they are just a tiny tiny bit more bright, I was surprisingly impressed with their performance. On a budget they sound fine for what you pay for in my opinion.
@Get On It Guitar's 🎸 yeah there is no fixing that in an encased pickup. I saw another video of these last night, and the pickup was a standard 6 poled pickup with white bobbins on the inside. The wax potting was all on the outside of the coil paper, and not on the inside where it should be. It just had a grey shielded wire coming out and not the 3 prong solderless setup. These are also suppose to have a preamp in them that makes them quite when you are not playing as well. It appears they are hit or miss on functionality and microphonics. The ones I ordered were around $45 for the set. I just ordered another set last night from the same vendor, I hope they are of the same quality as the first set I bought a year ago.
Thank you. I have these and suspected that they weren't wax potted, but now I see they are extremely well waxed. This is vital to prevent microphonic feedback (squeal).
The 3 pin header on the real EMGs are gold in color as opposed to the clones which have silver colored pins . THe Originals have a plastic piece that aligns the pins that the clones don't have and the epoxy used on the underside of the pickup is flush with the bottom of the cover as opposed to the epoxy on the bottom of the clones is below to edges of the cover. So far mostly cosmetic differences. And, the logo is etched onto the covers of the genuine EMGs as opposed to being printed on the cover of the clones. Again - cosmetics. For the money try out a pair and let your ears do the testing.

at least their waxed... ha.. But I never intend on keeping any chinese pups or stock pups on any guitar for that matter..

Well, EMG pickup electronics are pretty crude, overpriced for what they are. But fake ripping off is "just not cricket".

The cheap bass soapbar passive pickups are not resin potted its just a fake base.
