Hello I’m wondering if you might be able to help me? I’ve just finished replacing the belts on my 9696 and when I press play it plays for a few seconds then turns off, and chews the tape any idea what might be wrong? Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated 😊

Many thanks for taking the time to record the restoration process!! both videos are great!! A quick question. When playing tapes the play speed is slow. Belts need to be changed? I cleaned everything like the video. Firts try it played great, then started to play slow. Any help will be much appreciated!

Thank you for your question. Lower speeds are most common if the belt is too small. It must have minimum tension. It must not stop immediately when the hand is turned. It has to continue turning a little more. You can adjust the speed by adjusting the speed There is a round hole at the back of the motor with a rubber. It is cut in a cross. Take a small screwdriver and feel the regulator until you feel it. This way you can adjust the speed. But first the belts must be the right length.

@restoration-RC-Studio many thanks! In fact, I did the same cleaning as shown in the video and problem solved. It seems due to poor maintenance. Many thanks!

I have the same unit the SHARP GF8989E i bought it brand new in 1981 for £299.
I service it every 2 years and plays fantastic.
I really enjoyed watching you're restoration but, the inky thing that didnt impress me was that you were cleaning parts over the top of the tape mechanism.
And the fact that you cleaned the the capstan pulley with emery paper over the top of it as well........is shocking.

Hi. Thanks so much for the in-depth videos. We're restoring the same model but have hit a snag. When playing tapes, the sound is extremely muffled--as if here's a blanket over it. I've read a lot about adjusting the tape head but I cannot find the adjustment anywhere on this unit. It's usually just under the head, but it doesn't seem to be there. The unit is completely apart. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

@@BCCollectibles99 Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad my videos are helping you. There may be a few problems with poor sound quality: fouled head, worn head, misaligned azimuth. Often the azimuth is out of alignment. It is adjusted with the left head mounting screw. It is best to choose a good quality original recording for adjustment. Good luck with your restoration! :)
