Dude... you completely left out mario kart's BATTLE MODE (the blow up your oponents balloons dynamic!?), super important feature, this comparison is just not valid.
Mario Kart 64 might still be my favorite Mario Kart game, but Diddy Kong Racing wins out for me. It's still so impressive to me all these decades later. Its item system might not have been as flashy as Mario's but it added an extra layer of strategy.
Both are bloody great games even today me and my friends play both twice a year when we meet up as our local bar has a N64 set up and you can choose from a handful of multiplayer games and generally it's either of these but mostly Diddy Kong racing unless we want play Mario karts battle mode :) sometimes it can also be a WWF no mercy evening lol Good times 😄
Yes. In the UK most reviews said Diddy Kong racing was superior, and had many things that let down Mario Kart 64. And that's why I bought it over Mario Kart 64.
DKR will always have a special place in my heart. Embrace this game as a kid, now I'm a 34 yo man, married with two kids. If a new version/remake comes out, I will be screaming the loudest! 😅
I’m still bitter too, man. I used to hate Microsoft for not using BK and Diddy… and Conker and Timber, but these days I’m more upset with Nintendo for *not* deciding to purchase Rare.
Nintendo hated the fact that Rare's Games sold better than their own and that over 50% of N64 sales were due to Rare games with games like: DKR, DK64, Golden-eye, Perfect Dark, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Banjo Kazooie, and more Rare basically was the reason i even got the console
Nintendo owned part of Rare, so I don't think they hated the company. They definitely made the right choice, though, in letting it go to Microsoft. Rare hasn't put out a major hit since they left Nintendo.
Obviously Diddy Kong Racing is the better one. It has a adventure mode, mirror mode (race on tracks in reverse), boss battles can be challenging, T.T. the fastest driver with good maneuverability, better more fun multiplayer mode, better music, more tracks, and three different vehicles to use
as a kid I enjoyed Mario Kart 64 more thanks to its simplicity, it was easier to boot up with friends but Diddy Kong Racing is just insane they took a racing game and turned it into a pseudo collectathlon with a massive overworld, themed levels, a story and progression, special modes, bosses, so much stuff. Truly an ambitious game.
Diddy Kong Racing in every way and I have a different take re original characters over established ones. I love being able to play as original characters, DKR had lots of fun and original ones, a big plus for me! 😊
I’m down for that David Wise Christmas album. I went over to a friends house and played w her kids on SNES and N64 I noticed they didn’t have Diddy Kong Racing. I played more MK but DDKR is a special game.
100% both of them last month. One right after the other. I can say without a doubt that the better one is Diddy Kong Racing. Its not a question of preference. One of them is simply better in pretty much every category you would rank a good game in. -Diddy Kong Racing for the win!
Even though DKR is my all time favorite, I’ll concede that Mario Kart 64 is “better.” It’s more accessible as an arcade game for casual gamers in a party setting, but equally impressive for what its speed runners can do and its sustained overall popularity. Not to mention, DKR leaves me with a 26 yr unquenched yearning for the Key that should have been in that alcove at Spaceport Alpha. Why isn’t there a Future Fun Land battle course!!!!!????
DKR, sure it has fewer types of items, but what more do you need? And do you want more types of balloons on the track if you have the gimmick of collecting the same kind multiple times in a row to power it up? It's a bit more focused in one what it wants to be. And I kinda prefer the greater control of the items you pick up vs random/ with better odds for lower ranked players.
I don't really like Mario Kart 64 these days, because there are better Mario Kart games. However, I've had fond memories of 64 when I was a kid. I've also played Diddy Kong Racing as a kid, and I didn't like it very much. I didn't hate the game, but I remember not knowing what to do, and not being able to beat the game because of the silver coin challenge being way too hard. Diddy Kong Racing may have a lot more content than Mario 64, but it's also definitely way more frustrating and a lot more of a time sink than Mario Kart 64's more simple game that one could just pick up and play whenever. While I wouldn't mind a story mode or an adventure mode of some kind to come in a Mario Kart game, I just personally think Diddy Kong Racing is too much. So I'm team Mario Kart.
My favorite characters in Diddy Kong Racing were Timber, Conker, and Pipsy. Didn't matter that they weren't familiar, because the animals they were based on were familiar and cute. I like Bumper quite a bit more now, since I actually know what a badger is and didn't when I was a small child. Plus he's got that edge of a canonical criminal record now, though I think his record was clean when he was in this game.
MK64 is ultimately better because the framerate is better, all the characters are viable against each other and DDR also has that problem DK64 has with trying to collect 2D sprites in a 3D environment while traveling fast. DDR was still awesome though.
I liked DKR until it became a collectathon racer, like why does every Rare game need to have mandatory collectathons. I think the game is fun and colorful but MK64 is really so much better by being a simple racer.
I still play both games and 100% both multiple times and I do in fact prefer MK64. I love the arcade feeling and physics. It doesn’t matter if DKR has an adventure mode and overall more content. It’s how a game feels to play that matters the most.
I'll have to go with Mario Kart 64, though with the caveat that I've never actually played Diddy Kong Racing except for the demos at the store, and during the N64 era, I recall a lot of those having controllers with busted analog sticks, so I wasn't really experiencing it at its best.
Team DKR. Mario Kart was more of a classic, but DKR was a higher quality game all around. From the graphics, to the challenges, the theme of the tracks/worlds and the storyline. And plus it was extensive. I'm surprised they fit all that data into that cartridge...... MK had a better soundtrack in my opinion. Lol Diddy Kongs was leaning more towards the kids, MK had a more mature sound catered strictly to racing, but as a kid I enjoyed em both.
Diddy Kong Racing for sure. I grew up with that but did not grow up with Mario Kart 64, so I'm biased. But the music, adventure mode, and charm really make it superior in my opinion.
Also just to add i believe multiplayer is better in mk for people playing that have barely picked up an n64 controller yes, but multiplayer in dkr against a friend of similar skill is some of the most kino gaming you can have
At its side, MK64 is like a bad game, lol. I think it is by far the worst in the series. I even consider most of the fifth gen inspirations, even some obscure ones like Speed Punks or Mickey Super Speedway to be miles better than MK64.
I absolutely love both games, but I'm Team DKR!! I think both games do things a bit better - I love the drifting in Mario Kart, while I love the banana collection and zipper boosts in DKR - but I'm a sucker for music and boss battles in video games, which DKR has both. And, I'm a sucker for unlockable in-game content: enter, Drumstick, T.T. and Future Fun Land, along with the Battle games.
I was so overjoyed with almost every opinion in this video. I am team Diddy Kong Racing. I've been a fan of Mario Kart 64 and called it my favorite game in the series. But at the start of the year I finally took the time to analyze Diddy Kong Racing. And I was mega surprised when I decided to declare it the best racing video game of all time! There's so much more going on compared to Mario Kart, which includes flying and hovercraft (Mario Kart 7 added the glider I guess but DKR will always be the original). And the soundtrack beats it by a long shot. But this is where the opinion might get guilty. I like the DS version of the game a lot, and knowing the fans, it was hated by a long shot. The only problem I had with it was it's slow gameplay, making it take forever to finish a race. The Wish tracks fall under this the worst, with terrible TT AI and very few items while taking up to 7 minutes to finish. But even then, I don't care. The music in the DS version is a huge upgrade to me in contrast to the regular opinion, with unique bangers such as Treasure Caves, Windmill Plains, and Strangled Shrine. I love both the N64 and DS games for different reasons, and still to this day I enjoy the whole soundtrack, which is very rare of me to enjoy a soundtrack for a long period of time and not grow out of it after a couple months. David Wise is an absolute legend. Basically saying I hope Diddy Kong Racing does return somehow if Nintendo and Microsoft can strike a deal, I'd love to see a high definition Nintendo Switch port of it that fixes what most people hated about the DS version and staying faithful to the N64. If not, I hope mods can be made of the N64 game. Mario Kart 64: Amped Up was a legendary mod that fixed everything about the original game even though it was still my favorite, and adding fun new tracks and modes. why not make a Diddy Kong Racing: Amped Up?
@@Dariothehungry The CTR Remake is really good. Basically Diddy Kong Racing with a story mode but more of a skill aspect to it plus a ridiculous amount of characters, tracks, customization, etc
Well, this is a bit awkward for me, given I prefer Crash Team Racing after having played all three titles. That game's power slide ability combined with the three possible bonus turbo boosts by timing your presses of the opposite shoulder button to a narrow window in a charge bar adds a lot of depth to CTR that is not often seen in the fairly basic gameplay of kart racers, and I could _never_ get the back-and-forth waggle of the N64 analog stick to work consistently to let me speed boost during drifting in Mario Kart 64.
I'm team DKR. I love the game for many reasons but the main one being that when you analyze it deeply the game is about growing up. If we never get a sequel, I think it would be cool if we got a Mario Kart game with DKR characters added on. If smash can have crossovers, why not MK?

I used to love Mario Kart in general, without liking Mario Kart 64 a lot, and just recently ( finally ) played to Diddy Kong Racing, I think it was a better experience, DKR has great colors. But if I have to be honest I don't think these two games are so great, and I had more fun both back in the days and these days with a game seen as inferior: S.C.A.R.S. I'm not especially good at it, but taking the elephant car makes it easier to handle, while making you slow and it helps it to be fun and challenging as the game is no longer frustrating witht he road, but really needs you to collect more items as possible as other cars are way faster than this one... I think my favorite Mario Kart's games are the Wii episode, especially once you got a good bike and Funky Kong, you're quite unstoppable, the DS episode if I'm correct, and the SNES' episode. Only complain, but not a small one, with SNES' episodes: Mode 7 didn't age so well ( at least with MK ), so it could make yees tired quickly... I'm definitely agree with the fact MK64 has better characters, if it wasn't for Diddy, Conker & Banjo, charcaters in DKR are kind of forgettable. I'ld be happy to see a F Zero game with some Wipeout mechanics, F Zero GX is already challenging, but if we had weapons...
To this day, I would still say that DKR is the greatest kart racer of all time. It was a special magic that was one of a kind. Mario Kart is still fun and nostalgic, but not nearly as good... and CTR didnt feel enjoyable at all.
Diddy Kong Racing will always be better than Mario Kart 64. Great story, memorable characters, three kinds of vehicles, amazing race tracks and the hub world is colourful and vibrant.
It’s just when it come’s too them both on Single-Player-Mode , Mario fall’s incredibly short. Diddy-Kong , you can spend a few hour’s beating the adventure mode …….
Rare DOMINATED the N64. Basically the N64 proved that Nintendo was losing to its own studio. Banjo Kazooie, DKR, Golden Eye, Perfect Dark, DK64, Blast Corps, Conker, and more. Like i got an N64 to play Rare's titles not to play Nintendo's
Disagree completely saying mk has better items, or item system than dk. The strategy involved in deciding which balloon to go for and upgrade is a big factor in game play. Also the fact it is all strategy rather than rng from mk
i see AI generated spawn wave gaming put out another video HA HA i kid, great video, both games are great but diddy kong racing felt way less forgiving even though both games were pretty unforgiving
Id say DDR reluctantly, as i find it a blast to play with a story mode and different vehicles but some of the challenges were pretty frustrating. Why do I need to collect coins while racing, while the others can just race any way they like? Why do some of the bosses feel really cheap to race against? MK64 on the other hand is maybe a little more basic with just kart racing, but has very solid core gameplay and is still loads of fun, with non of the artificial padding and nonsense that DDR has (though MK64 can have bullshit moments too). They're both really good, though id prolly pick DDR over MK64 by just an inch.
This items are better indiddy kong racing because you can deliberately CHOOSE what item youre going to pick up and can make meaningful decisions throughtout the entire race, which is far better than Mario Kart whose items are RANDOM and now the player can make meaningful decisions, they can only get lucky or just deny the person behind them an item
The factors that make DKR an overall better game to Mario kart 64 are undeniable and really the only reason anyone says MK 64 is better is down to loyalty to the Mario brand, I don't believe that deep down anyone that has played both and says MK64 was/is the better game truly believes it.
Diddy Kong Racing easy win! It had different biomes of racetracks, you can Switch your vehicles to a plane and hoverboat, music is amazing, made by Rareware in the glory days,a lot of unique characters, exploring overworld, great opening, and minigames even better! Bonus there is a Story Mode and has lore.
DKR was that good they ended up making a 2nd.... oh wait no they didnt, that POS diddy ended up jumping ship over to MK double dash.. the character sucks and his game sucks
i compare Diddy Kong Racing more to a game i dislike wave racer. Diddy Kong Racing will always be compare to mario kart 64 . i feel they are nothing alike . beside the karts and great cast . but the karts are not the same.

@@Umbrella2 It's a really great game, isn't it? It's really too bad that it's so unknown. One of the best-looking games on the system, I'd say.
i see AI generated spawn wave gaming put out another video HA HA i kid, great video, both games are great but diddy kong racing felt way less forgiving even though both games were pretty unforgiving
Wiz pig is no joke
I like Diddy Kong for Single Player but Mario Kart multi-player was sick I kind of hate most tracks on Mario Kart but Diddy Kong controls are horrible
“Mario” not “Mayrio”
This items are better indiddy kong racing because you can deliberately CHOOSE what item youre going to pick up and can make meaningful decisions throughtout the entire race, which is far better than Mario Kart whose items are RANDOM and now the player can make meaningful decisions, they can only get lucky or just deny the person behind them an item
It’s really hard to peck one but diddy Kong raceing is the winner
I prefer DKR for no blue shell, but Mario Kart 64 is easier to beat
I gotta go with DKR
DKR is not only better overall... its a fraction of the price as MKART64.
Multiplayer Mario Kart
Single player Diddy kong racing
Diddy Kong Racing, by far.
We don't have a secuel to Diddy Kong Racing but at least we have Banjo-Pilot
yay
Hahah my thoughts exactly. One can dream
@@pressaTD Fun Fact: DKR was a big inspiration for Crash Team Racing.
SuperMario wins here!!! But....S.C.A.R.S was even better!!! 😍😍
Good vid, but how in the year of our lord 2024 are people still pronouncing Mario “mare-e-o”??
Rare took what Nintendo made and made it better. Banjo Kazooie was the better Mario 64. Diddy Kong Racing was the better Mario Kart
Mk is better, i had bouth in the day, the controls feel better
I'll always be TEAM MARIO KART
because I never had Diddy Kong racing as a kid
I hope you’ve at least played it!
The factors that make DKR an overall better game to Mario kart 64 are undeniable and really the only reason anyone says MK 64 is better is down to loyalty to the Mario brand, I don't believe that deep down anyone that has played both and says MK64 was/is the better game truly believes it.
Or they prefer the arcade feel of MK 64. And yes, you better believe it. People have preferences, you’re gonna have to get over that.
That's a trick question, crash team racing is the best kart racer
That is a solid game as well! I actually forgot about that game lol
Pod racing 🌟
Team DKR
Diddy Kong Racing easy win!
It had different biomes of racetracks, you can Switch your vehicles to a plane and hoverboat, music is amazing, made by Rareware in the glory days,a lot of unique characters, exploring overworld, great opening, and minigames even better! Bonus there is a Story Mode and has lore.
Story mode alone makes diddy kong racing superior to me
Diddy kong racing is better. Source: I said so.
Diddy!!
Team Mario kart 64
I like Mario kart
I couldn't watch the video because he was saying mary-o instead of mah-rio.
DKR 🥇
Team crash team racing
I respect that
diddy please, switch nlinee
Easy for dkr is better
DKR was that good they ended up making a 2nd.... oh wait no they didnt, that POS diddy ended up jumping ship over to MK double dash.. the character sucks and his game sucks
Technically…
Mario Karts is waaay better. There is no comparison.
Mario Kart 64?
i compare Diddy Kong Racing more to a game i dislike wave racer.
Diddy Kong Racing will always be compare to mario kart 64 . i feel they are nothing alike . beside the karts and great cast . but the karts are not the same.
I never played diddy Kong racing thoe
