    I’ve had my Christmas Cactus for many years! It blooms at least two or three times a year! It is in a room that has medium temperature, colder at night, then warmer when the heat goes on in the morning. I water about once every Three weeks, close the blinds each night and open them in the morning! It loves this! When temperatures get warmer, it goes out under my sun roof outside! It loves this and always grows huge and blooms again! When it starts getting colder, I bring it in and trim it! These plants are easy to take care of and they are beautiful!

    We had to hit the subscribe button we were in Emergency Services for a long time, when you said a defibrillator beside the plant that was the deciding factor. I used to qualify to have Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification to work in Emergency Departments, so that really made me laugh! Thanks for your information, fortunately I don't have to yell "Clear" and use the paddles on our plants, they just need a little TLC.

    35 years ago, I went to a thrift shop in the little town near my home. I often went there to shop for clothing and household items. There was a gorgeous holiday cactus with blooms of hot pink and white center. The original stalks were huge so I knew it was quite old. The ladies there were looking to re-home it as the woman who owned it had passed away. That woman was a very generous philanthropist who was well loved and respected in the community. Well, that plant went through the years of raising our children and moving from New Hampshire to Southern Georgia US. Recently we relocated to a 2 room cabin custom built for us in our older years. However with limited space it was not practical to keep the big mother plant. We re-homed it to dear friends who are great with houseplants and plenty of room for them. I did take cuttings and am happy to report my baby pot is blooming beautifully .❤. I am not an expert but I will say we noticed the plant would set beautiful blooms if kept in a cool room where artificial light was seldom on in the evenings. When it starts to fully bloom we place it in a common area for all to enjoy. These plants are real treasures! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. Marjorie from Georgia US. 🌈🦚🐑

    I have a number of Schlumbergera. Some do drop buds and you've just explained why - newcomers to the house. My oldest "Christmas Cactus" is named Margaret. She is enormous - 3 feet in diameter and blooms from November right through Easter. You just need patience and don't overwater. If you see "leaves" starting to look a little thin and wrinkled, give it a good watering and then leave it alone. And don't forget to fertilize. I have too many plants to keep track of so I use a time-release fertilizer that I just add to the pot in late winter.

    Thank you for the great video. You made a very good point, that these kinds of cacti need to 'know' when the seasons change. In other words, they shouldn't be kept in rooms that have artificial light on for most of the evening/night.
    For me, that means I needed to move my Easter cacti out of the room where we keep the fluorescent light on for most of the night (our kitchen) and move them into the unlit hallway every night. It's a bit of a pain in the neck to do this every day, but it has made a huge difference, in terms of the Easter cactus blooming. My Christmas cactus is kept in my entry vestibule ...temperature is low, and fluctuates with the seasons (I live in central Scotland) but it gets no artificial light. It blooms very reliably every year.
    I have repotted all these cacti in orchid substrate ...and they are thriving on that. Doing much better than they did in soil. I do feed every so often with a liquid organic fertiliser, which seems to work well.

I will repot my cactus in a much shorter pot to get those roots hydrated. It's in a very tall pot. oooops!!! thanks for ideas.

    I had my Christmas cactus outside in bright sun, brought it in and it had tons of blooms. It blooms a bit, but the flowers quickly wither. They don't stay open and lush. Also, the nice yellow one I brought home was good and then the open blooms lasted for about a day and withered. I thought I didn't water enough but now it's probably over watered. Maybe I shouldn't put it outside in the summer and just leave it in house(but it seemed to love it so much out there)

    What if the soil that my Thanksgiving cactus came in is going bad? I've seen mold growing on it. And some green mossy looking stuff. Should I still leave it in it's original soil till spring? It's an extremely heavy, peat moss filled soil that the nursery put it in.

    • @BelovedPlant
      @BelovedPlant  2 роки тому +4

      Hello B, if the plant is inside your house, go ahead and change it for another Mix as soon as it finishes blooming. If you do this now, it will drop all buds.
      I have a small green house at home and I understand the nursery's choice for heavier soil. It dries way too quickly in a green house environment, requiring more frequent maintenance.
