Gosh, this brings back the memories. When I moved to Jackson in 1989, Metrocenter was the hot place to go. Drank my first beers in Jackson with co-workers at the Ruby Tuesdays there (first week on the job). Worked five minutes away so I ate lunch their often (recognized one of the food court restaurants in the video). Bought my wife lingerie at the Victoria's Secret in the video :) Got my hair cut there, did Christmas shopping...today I drove by and took pictures of the weeds growing high in the hauntingly empty parking lot of this once vibrant mall. I would have never believed back then such a lively place could die. Now, a tip for the producers of this video. I'm an old TV reporter and worked at a station five minutes from Metrocenter. Great job of telling the story of this dead mall. I had totally forgotten about those palm trees, but their pictures in your video brought the whole mall image back. However, go easy on the panning and zooming. Get some longer, steady shots. Use zooms and pans as transitions, but give the eye time to focus on one thing for a few seconds.
When this mall opened in 1978 it was at the intersection of two interstates, I-20 which went east-west and I-220 which brings north-south traffic to the area. It was the big time place for all kinds of shopping. The only problem is that it was on the edge od Jackson's worse neighborhoods. Over the years another mall (Northpark) opened which pulled all the affluent traffic from Northeast Jackson and Madison County. A few years ago a large open-air center named Dogwood Place opened in the affluent Rankin County area. Both of these pulled all the people who had left Jackson to go to the suburbs. In the end the only store left was Sears, which actually was the only Sears store in Central Mississippi and they owned the property they were on. I went thete in the early years (I graduated high school in 1979). But since I lived in NE Jackson and Northpark was more local, I stopped ging there. I would have to say that I only went there one time in the last 20 years, and that was to renew my drivers license.
Keith Clingan What substance are you abusing? Metrocenter was built in the heart of Van Winkle, where nothing but decent people reside. It was many years before the riff raff moved in. And there was no I-220 when Metrocenter opened.
The mall of my teenage years. 1980-1986. Great memories. Remember when it opened in 1978. It was remodeled in the mid 90s sometime, and it did not look this when it opened back in 78 and in the 80s. The palm trees were not there. It was awesome. Sad to see it now. R.I.P
I grew up near this mall and spent a lot of time there in the 90s. It is sad to see it go. I had hoped to visit again before it closed - I appreciate that you were able to! The center court with the columns is one of the most unique I've ever seen in a mall. I also appreciate your homage to Dan Bell's style!
This is great for small business owners! When Malls did not exist small businesses flourished all throughout but Malls killed that for small business owners. While I love a Mall, I do not like the control malls place on small businesses.
Something unbelievable and unreasonable and loss to die ..It is a disaster on the commercial movement and shop owners ..Where are the responsible authorities in Jackson County ..?All the respect to the clothes shop that remained steadfast is struggling closure and death until the last end of the breath..
This mall is in the middle of the ghetto in a city that is 80 percent black . Not very many suburbanite emo , punks, and goths running around . At least not enough to justify putting a store like that in there
