  • In this video, Professor Thorsby discusses some of the basic concepts and positions in ethical theory. Unfortunately a technical error occurred while recording in which the voice track is out of sync with the video. I tried to correct it, but was unable. Due to time constraints I could not re-record the video, but I will attempt to address the problem in future videos. I hope its not too distracting.

Like these videos! Moral relativism is the equivalent of immorality, the individual will implement or drop morality as convenient and certainly under difficult and demanding circumstances. Relativism is a pervasive problem in our culture that leads to nihilism.

Thanks Mark for your introductory video. You refer to 15 weeks of lectures and I am not sure whether you have shared the other videos. Would be great if you could kindly tell us what the topics in chronological order are and where to find these videos. Thanks.

    Hello,
I don't know how to express my gratitude for the work you do here, so I'll just describe a situation I live with every class of Communication' Theory. The professor reduces utilitarian ethics to a "Liberal model devided in two main branches: libertarian (which has no normative frame) and igualitarian (which does have a normative frame but does not care much about autonomy)"....according to her. She also claims that Kant's ethics are a communitarian model (whatever that means) where the principle of equality drives the ethical frame. She says that the third model is a perfectionist one where the principle of dignity creates something like a religious autoritarian monarchy present in every aspect your life (She says Plato supports this model). What is she even talking about? I feel so lost in that class, sometimes I think I'm the one reading wrong, but then I hear your videos and realize that its not just me interpreting it this way. What is worse is that she wont provide a reading list or source to understand how she came to this conclusions.
    Sorry for ranting.
Your lectures are comprehensive and I can easily follow the arguments of the authors with you, unlike hers.
Thank you very much. I really would rather give you my time, because you do teach.
    Thank you.

Hi, Mark! Thank you for your wonderful lectures! Ive been silently watching your videos over 5 years now. I just want to know what kind of application you are using for your online lectures?

Hi Nik, Thanks for watching. I hope they have sparked your thinking in some manner. I use a couple of programs to build the videos, although I have tried many different applications. Currently I use Camtasia to record the webcam, the screen, and the microphone. For the slides themselves I build out the presentations using Prezi. Thanks again for the support.

Ethos means habit or custom in Greek. Morality from the Latin Morae customs. Study right action.
Meta is that which is above and beyond. Is it okay to lie? What is the good? Justice, really?
Normative- what makes it right or wrong.
Practical - abortion. Dilemma- both choices are bad or problematic.
    What is goodness.
    What makes goodness
    What is the choice
    Custom of action - morality
Rational investigation of action - ethics
I find it very interesting that all the examples I see of ethics and morality are exactly the opposite of how they are described in the video. I don’t see ethics being rational, I see them as societal norms that can be agreed-upon. When we look at all the examples of ethics, we encounter it in professions in the professions set the ethics as the acceptable standard whether right or wrong they typically don’t declare. Morality I see individuals excepting and being vastly different from person to person society has far less impact from the perspective of customs as I walk up and down the street and talk to people the differences are huge compared to standards of ethics, like corporate policy.
    Hedos is pleasure. Pain. Epicuris
    Drinking, sex,
Egoism - self nietche and rand
Utilitarian is a consequential ethics. John Stuart Mill.
Deontology is a duty based ethics. Kant says lying and suicide is always wrong.
Virtue - excellent...., courage justice magnificence honest
    Artistotle (character)
Subjectivism- macke not moral facts. Murder is wrong because it is legal? Ethics is to help us decide what is wrong or right for everyone. No that’s called public policy.
Moral relativism - how can I decide what is wrong. Genital mutilation. It is like you don’t want to acknowledge public policy.

18:52 But Epicurus didn't say that there is a good pleasure and bad pleasure. This is only a modern interpretation as I understand

I think ethics is quite distinct from morality. Morality is subject to culture and therefore limited and not necessarily ethical.
