You handled that unhappy customer much better than i would have. I’m sure you include instructions to not put in dishwasher. By giving them a new board is very good customer service. You will definitely get more orders from their family and friends due to your service alone. Because they will tell everyone they know. Much better for that to be good than bad…Great job! …you guys rock.

Your customer messed up. Lied and tried to cover it up. Losing one customer isn’t going to kill your business. Like you said in a video a while back, know when to say no and walk away. Issue the refund and be done. The business will strive without them. Love you guys and keep doing great work.

Fly, when you replace the product you need to be sure the customer gets the proper care advise. how to clean ... etc . washing the board in the dishwasher is what got that customer in the situation.
The customer policy is a yes and no game and may not work as you intended. What is to stop them from doing the same thing to the new board and returning that one as well. Customer service is the KEY to every business. In my business ( we make Hot sauces ) I have replaced bottles for various reasons. IE breakage in mail and this is done right away but I always talk to the customer first to find out the exact nature of the problem and then work from there. It can not be just a cut a dry policy because YOU need the information going forward and this helps the mistakes to be NOT repeatable. Perhaps as Part of Your boxing you may want to include a single piece of paper that says in LARGE fonts. Putting cutting board in dishwasher voids the warranty . Hand wash only etc. as well as include some board conditioner with every board you sell. They may still screw it up and you may still replace the board but it will not be continuous returns from them. Kinda a side note My knives are expensive, they are my tools of my trade. You put my knives in the dishwasher I kill you LOL
Who puts wood in the dishwasher?? Well actually my husband does. We fight over it a lot. Clear as day you will damage the wood from doing that. Great business you guys. I’m here in the U.K. xx
You could definitely speed up your batching with a drill press. Build a jig that will hold the board at exactly the same point every time and then put the stop on so you dont drill through.

I'm an electrical contractor and sure I have some unhappy customers, not too many fortunately, I've learned that your most challenging customers are usually your best learning opportunities. Most of the time its the wife or the husband that thought they were getting this or that but one of them didn't convey exactly what was wanted and a return trip is necessary. Of course a well-written proposal/ contract goes a long way in redeeming yourself because most people dont read everything in the proposal!

I got a big kick out of watching this one about the unhappy customer. Great way to handle it! I’m a maker of sorts, mostly using live edge stuff that I’ve milled myself. I make quirky furniture and stuff, marrying woodworking, blacksmithing, and welding. For charcuterie boards, I forge the handles out of steel stock and spend a ton of time on each board. Never tried to sell one, but I write a story about the origin and process. Long winded explanation, but on the card I tell them if they put it in the dishwasher it will probably explode. When you opened the box, it was easy to see how the damage had occurred. Love the content and enthusiasm in your videos! I share you guys with lots of people.

I would suggest that you put a piece of 1/4 " clear plastic about 6" wide down the center of your table saw sled over the blade from the front rail to the back rail . It serves as a guard to keep your fingers from getting too close to the blade, and cuts down on the amount of sawdust that gets thrown back into your face.
Perhaps the circle was something leaning on it in the dishwasher and transferred across. And despite what people think, you're wise to build in the cost of breakages and returns into the prices. It's a business and you're looking at the overall picture, I'm not sure why people take it so personally.
I include a can of board butter and instructions on the board and on the can of butter to NEVER put wooden things in the dishwasher. I understand keeping customers happy; but if someone puts a $350 board in the dishwasher after I’ve warned them not to do so, that’s on them. Even “waterproof” glue can’t stand up to the heat in a dishwasher, let alone the wax finish.
When working up your price for something is the cost of materials not included in the multiplier? Just for craps and grins I put in $1,000 and 7 hours and it came back at $1,315. $315 is exactly 1.5 of the labor rate, which means the material wasn’t included with the multiplier.

I use a heated carnauba beeswax and mineral oil combination and it’s 4 coats !!!! Then I do a beeswax paste ,overkill? maybe ,then it only ever needs a wipe ,washing it should never be submerged only washed off with a cloth ,wipe when finished so things don’t get dried on and then rewarded as needed ,follow the INSTRUCTIONS 🤦♂️

With Invisibility, am I invisible forever with no recourse to become visible? do my clothes become invisible with me or do I have to be naken the whole time? Surely 200 cutting board sales weren't enough to make you go out and lease a huge shed, buy a glowforge and all the rest? I guess the real question is, does your business make enough from the woodworking side alone to keep it afloat? Or is it reliant on youtube and other social media? Just asking as a person with a small woodworking business.
Yo! It sounds like you're new to the channel. Great questions! The UA-cam money is kept separate from the woodworking business! We split rent about 70/30 between the two, since the woodworking business takes up more real estate. We've sold about 400 boards, but only shipped about 200 of them (which is why we said 200 in the video). We've also done custom furniture jobs and larger items as well which make WAY more money than the boards.

You're right to ask how can cutting boards alone pay for it all and why don't we see these custom jobs he speaks of? You Tube Woodworking is not about woodworking in many cases. It's about subscribers and UA-cam clicks. That's what pays the bills. Once you create a story, you take folks along for the ride. In the next year you will only see cutting boards presented to viewers. And the amazing journey they are both on.
What do you guys to to prevent boards from warping, especially if they are shipped out to clients in other states that may have different humidity levels? Tough situation with the “unhappy customer” but glad to see great customer service still exists!

I am sure that you have included with your boards something along the lines of NOT DISHWASHER SAFE!. But, you could even brand it on people foreheads and they will still put it in the dishwasher because they know better than you and will not be happy. :(
Gotta love good customer service! Looks like they had a bowl or some kind of a lid to a pan leaning against the board in the dish washer. Just my guess looking at that partial circle on there.
If you get less than 1% return due to idiots, then you are doing well. It is the same for everyone including Apple. Apple products are not only good, but their customer service also is impressive. The last time I asked for their help, it was 100% my fault. I was the idiot. I took it to the Apple store, and Apple fixed it at free of charge. I have been their fan some what before. I knew they have a good reputation. When I take my Apple products back to Apple store, I can always speak to people who CAN speak English, are helpful and very courteous. So I have had my trust in their product. Sure, they may charge premium for their products, I guess. But above all, I trust they have solid products and quality service. Over the years, I stopped buying cheap products for this exact reason. Trust me, the premium products would last more than a life time, if you take care of it. It will pay for itself in the end.
If your unhappy customer had contacted you and said “I mistakenly put this in my dishwasher. Is there anything you can do to fix it?” What would you have done?
i take pride in awesome customer service and product... but i simply will not lose money off of dumb people stickin boards in dishwashers lol. i give instructions with every board. if they choose to do otherwise... thats on them. they can order another if they want to. conversely... 2 weeks ago a customer brought a board back for a glue line that started to separate (first time i had ever seen that) and so i repaired for him by cutting and gluing again cause that was a fault of my work rather than his ignorance.

What amuses me about this video was the comment that you get roasted for charging a premium price for your boards. That is from people that no nothing about running a business or cant afford your prices. I run a business where I charge people an average 3000.00 for something they cannot see taste touch or smell. Try that out. 2. When someone says that "it" costs too much, That is not a question but it is a statement. Do not reply to it. If you do you probably wont get the sale. You should never have to explain why something costs what it does.
So you just send to the customer a new cutting board for the same price, and its like nothing happen, how about the customer trust, time and maybe a gift to the customer friend he couldn't gift it in time, another thing , you didn't bother to talk about the customer issue first, but you where so exited for the youtube trophy, so do you really care about your product or you just wrap it in a fancy box.

On your crosscut sled, have you considered making a stop block with both the length and width dimensions already established?
Need to trim both ends of the board - a pencil line of the finished dimensions on the sled is plenty!

i take pride in awesome customer service and product... but i simply will not lose money off of dumb people stickin boards in dishwashers lol. i give instructions with every board. if they choose to do otherwise... thats on them. they can order another if they want to. conversely... 2 weeks ago a customer brought a board back for a glue line that started to separate (first time i had ever seen that) and so i repaired for him by cutting and gluing again cause that was a fault of my work rather than his ignorance.

Do you really want a customer who puts boards in the dishwasher? (I assume you have some sort of warning to NOT do that.)

What amuses me about this video was the comment that you get roasted for charging a premium price for your boards. That is from people that no nothing about running a business or cant afford your prices. I run a business where I charge people an average 3000.00 for something they cannot see taste touch or smell. Try that out.
2. When someone says that "it" costs too much, That is not a question but it is a statement. Do not reply to it. If you do you probably wont get the sale. You should never have to explain why something costs what it does.

So you just send to the customer a new cutting board for the same price, and its like nothing happen, how about the customer trust, time and maybe a gift to the customer friend he couldn't gift it in time, another thing , you didn't bother to talk about the customer issue first, but you where so exited for the youtube trophy, so do you really care about your product or you just wrap it in a fancy box.
