Laufey is so interesting to me, she’s an artist whose clearly enamored with the aesthetics of jazz while never fully participating in the culture of it. Like she has all these videos of her songs with the lyrics and the changes (aka chords) but it’s structured in a way that no actual jazz musician would find useful. I see a lot of videos of songs that have been transcribed and have the change’s written on the screen and in sync with the music, videos like that are very useful and fairly popular now. And to me it seems that Laufey really enjoys those videos and wants to bring that sense of utilitarianism to her own music. However, in those other videos the chords are paired with sheet music, a structure that is easy for a musician to look at and understand. But in laufeys videos the chords are paired with the lyrics, something that is nearly useless to a musician but very pleasing to someone who maybe doesn’t understand what the chords actually mean but appreciates the feeling that they are understanding the music in a similar way that a musician would. I’m not pointing this out to say that laufey sucks and is a phony or anything. I like her music and she is truly a talented musician. She doesn’t need to be a serious jazz musician to be a good musician. I just find it interesting that she wants to recreate this aesthetic. No else has really done this like her before to my knowledge.
