Hélène Kuragina the reason is on Genius, I think it was because act 1 was too long, and once they added Dust And Ashes, it got even longers. Dave figured that what we learn from this song isn't enough to justify leaving it, so it was cut.

So by the time the show opened officially and critics were allowed to review it Natasha lost was lost which is very sad but I understand why! I was lucky enough to see the show twice, once in previews and once during the run. In previews Natasha lost was in the show, during the run it was not. A lot of changes were made to Natasha and bolkonskys during previews as well.
